Prospect Profile: Brandon DicksonPosted by azruavatar in Brandon Dickson, prospect profilesThey usually appear in the Sunday paper. A journalist gets 5 minutes time with someone, jots down some quotes and writes a total fluff piece about the player. Generally, even though I dislike these pieces and find them vapid, I read them when they’re about prospects. I found myself pleasantly surprised by this well-written, insightful piece into a player who, prior to this year, was relatively unknown. Marlon Morgan of the Memphis Commercial Appeal deserves some kudos for putting together a well-done “human interest” story. After reading the story, I can’t fight this urge to write about Brandon Dickson myself. Batavia was rained out today and Springfield was the only game tonight in a wild one. Since it’s a light day, let’s have a comment thread conversation. We all know who my “guy” is that I root for in the system over all others (Arquimedes Nieto). We all know DanUp’s from VEB, but who is yours? This is not a hipster contest, you don’t get points the more obscure the player is. Tell me who and why as we enter Wednesday, the most boring day in sports. Unless you like the ESPYs of course… On to the one game DFR after the jump! (azru: I asked Steve Sommer if he would toss together the limited pitch f/x data from the Futures Game for us. Minuscule sample size alert as Steve will note so don’t make any life decisions from this. You can find more of Steve’s work at various joints including ESPN, Beyond the Box Score and Play A Hard Nine. Thanks, Steve.) One of the best aspects of the Futures Game is that we get some Pitch F/X data on pitchers that we otherwise would not have any data on. This is especially useful for those of us that will not get to see these guys pitch until they reach MLB. Clearly we will be doing some analysis and making some observations with extremely small samples, but it is still useful to get a feel for each pitcher’s fastballs if nothing else. QC got canceled today and all of AAA was off so Memphis was as well. Nice how that works isn’t it. Springfield is in a delay in game 2 of their double header. They ended up ending the game after 6 innings. Sub-titled: Why this draft was conservative and you should still like it. The Cardinals have long been criticized because of what draft watchers consider and over-fondness for college players resulting in low upside drafts. These critics point at a system largely devoid of high ceiling talent as evidence of the conservative drafts. The flipside of this is that college players are categorically more likely to return value in the major leagues to a club in the first two rounds. It’s really not even close when considering the averages. The psychological aspect of human mind rarely rewards probabilistic thinking and is far more inclined to think in absolutes or hyperbolic statements. So while the Cardinals approach the draft in a way that is most likely to offer the highest return on their investments, they leave themselves open to criticism that argues that they’re not picking the safe college picks instead of the high reward-high risk high school players. It’s a catch-22. Springfield gets rained out tonight so we’ve got 5 games to cover. On a personal note, the battle between desktop and robot owner has come to an end. I have destroyed the problematic software that precluded me from having a stable wireless internet connection via a network adapter. That problematic software turned out to be the operating system, Windows Vista, which is, tragically, entirely unsurprising. Two games apiece for Springfield & Batavia gives us an overflowing bounty of 8 games to cover tonight. Away we go. Read the rest of this entry » We’ll catch Memphis Game 2 in the morning as that game got started at 10:09pm Central time. Also, I expect to do some writing this weekend. If you’ve got any topical requests, leave them in the comments. |
