A few notes from last night's abomination that was Batavia vs. Brooklyn.

Overall, not an impressive showing by anyone. I'm not a scout by any means but the pitching was really, really bad overall. Andrew Moss has okay stuff but had bad command and his offspeed pitches were only fooling the least accomplished Brooklyn hitters. He does use an sidearm slider that was pretty effective late in counts.

I will try to be a nice guy while describing Houston Summers by saying I hope I caught him on an off night. His delivery is beyond strange, with almost no leg movement. Is he a knuckleballer? If so, his has no movement. If not, he throws a 55 mph change up. Last night, he was uncompetitive. Matthew North had the best stuff of all the Batavia pitchers I saw, but again, no command. Just an awful showing.

The offensive side wasn't much better but to their credit, they battled back from a big deficit just to watch their pitching staff fall apart. Matt Valaika looks like a good athletic kid, he made a nice running catch in right field. My impressions on Nick Longmire were that he needs to gain some weight, he's really tall and skinny, surprising really given his past power. Also, his swing will need some work, it's pretty long and he will struggle against higher ceiling pitching if he doesn't make some changes to shorten it up. Joey Bergman had the best offensive game and has a nice approach at the plate. Chris Edmundson has some real raw power. Pat Biserta has a really aggressive swing. The only guy who really caught my eye was the catcher, De La Cruz. I really like his swing, he has a good approach at the plate and made a really nice pick off at first base.

Not a great night - fortunately I got to watch Darrell Ceciliani & Cory Vaughn, both who have really impressive offensive profiles for Brooklyn. Ceciliani might be a major leaguer in a couple years.

As long as I'm hyperventilating: In the GCL, Roberto De La Cruz was 3-4, 2 HR. He's up to 7. Anthony Garcia also went yard, his 5th.

De La Cruz is at .250/.286/.491. He's finally showing the power that earned him a 7-figure bonus. But the plate discipline might be years away.

DSL Cardinals threw a no hitter today with Carlos Matias going 7 innings with 1 walk and 8 strike outs. Does anyone know that status on signing him? And what level do you think he will be pitching at next year?
