Thanks to mysterui for the heads up on this video of Carlos Matias.  Matias has pitched 55 innings in the Dominican Summer League. He’s struck out 70 and walked just 13 batters. The impressive 18 year old will celebrate his birthday next month.

I really, really hope he’s not been dumb enough to lie about his age/identity again. If we can get him into the US and into short-season ball this year he’s a top 100 prospect in baseball IMO, perhaps even top 50. Pretty clear he’s learnt all he’s going to in the DSL.

I think if he isn’t certified this year it effectively ends any chance he ever has at playing in the Big Leagues. I don’t think MLB or the US Goverment will look highly on this type of activity.

Didn’t Bryan Martinez have pretty similar numbers in the DSL as an 18 y/o as well? He looks great, and the stuff seems to play, so I can’t wait to get him into the states and see what he can do.

I think Bryan Martinez already IS in the states. Unless you were talking about Matias? I’m disappointed that it has taken this long to verify his age and identity. It was my uderstanding that it was likely just a formality and he’s be in America around the July 2 signing day for the foriegn prospects. Then I heard around August 1st. Well we are in the second week in August and not really any news on him. Patience is a virtue I suppose.

Matias got some love today on BA’s Hot Sheet. He was mention on the “In the Team Photo” section.

We should be ok. A 16 year old would never make a video of himself playing catch with his friends…

    …wait…

    …shit!
