I’m planning on making a run to several minor league games over the next month. In the next four weekends, I’ll be hitting up Memphis, Springfield and Quad Cities. Next weekend will be either Memphis or Springfield depending on the weather.
Memphis is in a high scoring game out west. I’ll update in the morning. Memphis loses a high scoring affair against Vegas.
- Nick Stavinoha was 4-for-6 with a double and a HR.
- Ruben Gotay was 2-for-4 with a HR and a walk.
- Bryan Anderson was 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles.
- Donovan Solano was 2-for-5.
- Adron Chambers was 3-for-4. Chambers has brought his good plate discipline up to Memphis but he hasn’t shown much in the way of power. In 44 ABs, he’s hitting .295/.426/.341.
- PJ Walters was touched up for 10 hits and 10 runs (8 earned) in 4.1 innings. He struck out 2 and walked 2.
- Rich Rundles struck out 3 allowing 1 hit in the 7th.
- Eduardo Sanchez struck out 2 and walked 1 in the 8th.
- Matt Carpenter went 4-for-5 with a HR. Carpenter might be the most intriguing position player currently in the system. His peformance this year has been hard to ignore. I can’t wait to see him live.
- Andrew Brown was 2-for-5 with a double and a HR. Brown’s bat is intriguing but he’s likely consigned to first base.
- Xavier Scruggs was 3-for-4 with a HR.
- Nick Additon went 7 innings striking out 4. He allowed 5 hits and 2 walks for 2 ER.
- Blake King pitched a scoreless frame striking out 2.
Palm Beach 6, Dunedin 2 (7 innings)
- Ryan Jackson was 2-for-4 with a HR.
- Jermaine Curtis was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.
- Kevin Thomas struck out 9 in 6 innings of work. He allowed 5 hits.
Palm Beach 4, Dunedin 4 (7 innings)
- D’Marcus Ingram was 2-for-5.
- Alex Castellanos was 2-for-3.
- Jared Bogany was 3-for-4.
- Domnit Bolivar was 2-for-3 with a double, walk and a HR.
- Brett Zawacki went 6 innings striking out 4. He allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits and 2 walks. Good to see the groundballs up as he recorded 9 of 12 outs on the ground.
- David Carpenter with his 16th save and another scoreless inning.
- Ted Obregon was 2-for-5.
- Matt Adams was 3-for-4 with a pair of HRs doubles.
- Frederick Parejo was 2-for-3 with a double a HR and a walk.
- CJ Beatty was 2-for-4 with a double.
- Raniel Rosario went yard.
- Shelby Miller with a messy box score line. He went 5 innings and struck out 8 batters. He also allowed 9 hits and 3 walks for 7 runs (6 earned).
- Nick Greenwood tossed a 1 hit, 1 walk, 1 K scoreless frame.
Batavia 4, Brooklyn 5 (11 innings)
- Nick Longmire was 2-for-6. The Cardinals have consistently had Longmire in centerfield, which is a good sign.
- Johnathan Rodriguez gets the golden sombrero.
- Chris Edmumdson was 2-for-4 with a double.
- Zach Russell no hit Brooklyn for 6 innings walking 1 and striking out 6.
- Chase Reid, Keith Butler and Travis Lawler combined across the remaining 5 innings to allow 5 runs (2, 2, & 1 respectively)
Johnson City 11, Bristol 3 (7 innings)
- Greg Garcia was 1-for-3 with a pair of walks.
- Cody Stanley was 2-for-4 with a triple and a walk. That’s Stanley’s 4th triple in 137 ABs.
- Philip Cerreto was 3-for-3 with a HR and a walk.
- Romulo Ruiz was 3-for-5 with a double.
- Kevin Siegrist pitched 5 innings allowing 3 hits and 1 unearned run. He struck out 7.
Johnson City 1, Bristol 2 (7 innings)
- Johnson City collected just 3 hits and 1 walk in this game.
- Cale Johnson pitched 5 innings allowing 2 runs on 5 hits.

All the scouting reports I have heard about Zack Cox say that he will hit for high average, sprays the ball all over the field, will hit for descent power, and can possibly play 2B. This sounds very similar to Matt Carpenter. With the season he is having and David Freese possibly being out into Spring Training with ankle surgery, what are the chances he will be given a shot at 3B (or 2B) next year?
Who Carpenter or Cox? Gotta get Cox signed first which I don’t think is a slam dunk.
What are the chances Carpenter will get a shot at 3B or 2B next year?
Russell is pitching very well at Batavia.
Adams did NOT have a homer, let alone two.
Bogany stole two bases.
Adams had a pair of doubles. Corrected.
Stavinoha is making the PCL look easy. Good to see he is making good use of his big league training.
Parejo is starting to intrigue me with his power. He is hard to judge because he is still young for the league (was 19 y.o.) for the first half of the season. His K’s are up but so are his walks and his power is way up. I’m starting to think he has .800 OPS potential which if he cans tick in CF would play nicely. (He’s .819 in 122 AB’s since the AS break and one of the youngest players in the league – even in his second season there)
A couple of 21 y.o. players at QC are coming on strong since the AS break as well. Adams has his OPS above .900 (ops of 1.100 in 164 AB’s since the all-star break) and CJ Beatty is at .930 OPS in 114 AB’s since the AS break.
Cerreto continues to intrigue me. .420 ba, 1.216 OPS woba .485. Those numbers are outstanding no matter what your age. K rate around 12%. You’d like to see more walks but when everything coming to the plate looks like a beach ball it is understandable he isn’t walking a lot. I’d be less enthused if he was a 1B. He has a couple of triples and 6 SB so he must have at least a little speed as well.
Carpenter’s power jump has been impressive. Has made himself into a real prospect. He’s not young but Freese has proven that isn’t necessarily an issue.
Adams seems to have gotten little notice here or elsewhere despite good numbers both years in the pros. With Albert’s resigning looking like less of a slam dunk Adams might become important in the long term plan. He gets bonus points for going to Slippery Rock U.
Cerreto is another example of the Cards drafting a player with good numbers from a backwater college, like Racobaldo or Curt Smith. He can bully younger kids in the Appalachian League and help at higher levels.
I’ve discovered my one superpower: I’m first on board the bandwagons of third-slash-secondbasemen capable of hitting for a high average with very little power. First Descalso, and now Carpenter. I am on a roll!
I wonder if I could trade this power in for something useful. Like a taco or something. This seems approximately as valuable as a taco.
Wow. I managed a typo in my own name. That’s a new one.
Kevin Thomas has put together a quiet but good year at PB. His FIP is near 3.00 and his GB% is over 60%. A little old for the league but since he’s not a hard thrower I think that matters less.
Zawacki with another solid game. He’s starting to miss some bats which was my knock on him early in the year.
David Carpenter has put together a solid year at PB. His ERA in his last 20 games is 0.43. Surprised Delgado got the promo rather than him just based on age.
I’ve always wondered where do I find out definations of all these non-traditional sabermetric stats? I know some of them but not all of them. I read Moneyball where they explained some. Whats the best site to explain what many of you talk about on here such as FIP.
Andrew,
Here’s a good post from VEB from a while back: http://www.vivaelbirdos.com/2010/1/7/1238375/sabermetric-primer-an-assortment. It’s got links that explain most of these sabermetric stats. I hope this helps.
Hey that was me :)
Here’s a great resource http://saberlibrary.com/
I’m glad to see Carpenter start hitting some home runs, I know that was a knock on him earlier not having enough power for a 3rd baseman.
Since Freese looks to be a question mark going into the start of the season next year, I am thinking moving Matt Carpenter up to AAA for a few weeks before the season ends would be wise. The organization could get an idea if he could step in next year without having to make a trade for someone else. It’s really nice to see him starting to hit for some power although maybe that is somewhat attributable to home park?
Some of Carpenter’s home run’s at home and on the road have been to centerfield. (400′ +). He does have a couple to the left field bullpen at Hammons Field which is short. I have been lucky to watch him since he was brought up to Springfield. The first couple of home stands everything he hit was centerfield to left field. May has been adjusting his stance and after his little slump he now is using the whole ball park. I have also seen him hit with more pop as the season continues.
May seams to do a good job with the hitters. Several of the kids have given him credit with their improvement since 2007. I am hearing the same thing with Martinez this year with the pitchers. I have talked to several of them and they have nothing but praise for him.
I agree with you 100%. I think the hitting coach and pitching coach have done wonders with the players who have asked for help. I think your description of Carpenter is “Spot On” and if he could bulk up to Matt Holliday’s frame, he would be “all world”. I think this Springfield team is poised to win the league this year. The starters, relievers, offense and defense are as solid as I’ve seen for years in the Cardinals farm system. Keep this team together for a few more weeks.
Ditto me on the intrigue with Carpenter. Azru, interested to get a first-hand report.
The Cards will probably want Carpenter to collect 500+ at bats at AAA,. Freese had 2 seasona at AAA.
Nick Stavinoha clearly has nothing left to prove at AAA. (hehe)
Springbirds in a heated race with Tulsa for playoffs, I doubt Carpenter or anyone else will go anywhere.
I saw Carpenter last year in PB, he was impressive then.
Swauger jumped the wall to rob Tulsa of a 2 run HR.
4-2 (good guys win) for that second PB game, not 4-4.
Any recent news of draftee signings? It’s getting about time for Cox, Jenkins and Wilson to either do it, or not.
Word is Jenkins has agreed on terms but not signed yet.
Chamber’s OPS is about the same as super prospect Desmond Jennings (both at AAA). His wOBA is higher. Both were born the same month. Does this mean Chambers will be a top 100 prospect by BA this year? :)
Swauger’s catch was fantastic. He went up and got it. It would have tied the game if he had not caught it(1st inning).
Thought Carpenter’s shot was a lazy fly when he hit it. Had good strength to get it out because it didn’t sound good off the bat. He definitely has room to grow into his frame. He almost seemed skinny. He had better speed than I imagined.
What do people think of Scruggs? He hit a BOMB to dead center. Banged it high off the batters eye in Tulsa.
