Memphis 3, Las Vegas 6

  • James Rapoport was 1-for-3 with a pair of walks.
  • Donovan Solano was 3-for-4 with 3 doubles.
  • Ryan Kulik went 6 innings allowing 3 runs on 8 hits. He walked 2 and recorded 11 of 15 outs on the ground.

Springfield 10, Tulsa 6

  • Tommy Pham was 2-for-6 with a pair of doubles.
  • Pete Kozma went 0-for-6. Kozma is looking to end the year with an OPS over .700.
  • Matt Carpenter was 3-for-4 with a walk.
  • Steve Hill was 3-for-5 with a HR. I don’t think there’s a chance that Hill can actually stick at catcher. He could be a decent bench bat for the Cardinals and an emergency catcher but the reality is that he’s not a good fit for the parent club.
  • Xavier Scruggs was 1-for-3 with a pair of walks.
  • David Kopp was kicking butt at the plate going 3-for-3 with a double.  The pitching wasn’t as stellar allowing 8 hits and 5 runs in 5 innings.  He struck out 4 and walked 2

Palm Beach 6, Dunedin 5 (11 innings)

  • Ryan Jackson was 2-for-5 with a double.
  • Niko Vasquez, Richard Racobaldo and Alex Castellanos all went yard. Racobaldo’s HR was the go ahead run in the 11th.
  • Scott Schneider has found Palm Beach to be a more difficult challenge than Quad Cities. He was touched up for 8 hits in 5.2 innings. He allowed 3 runs and 2 walks while striking out 5.
  • Casey Mulligan pitched a 1 strikeout scoreless frame.
  • David Carpenter took the blown save allowing a solo HR and striking out 2 in his inning of work.

Quad Cities 9, Peoria 8

  • Luis Mateo was 2-for-5 with a double.
  • Devin Goodwin was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.
  • Frederick Parejo was 2-for-5 with a HR.
  • Raniel Rosario was 2-for-5 with a double.
  • Ivan Castro was 2-for-4 with a double, triple and a walk.
  • A bad night for Joe Kelly who failed to escape the first inning. (No reports of an injury as of this writing.) Kelly allowed 3 runs in .2 innings on 1 hit and 3 walks.
  • Michael Blazek struck out 5 in 4.2 innings and 1 unearned run on 2 hits and a walk.

Batavia 8, Vermont 1

Johnson City 6, Bristol 4 (11 innings)

  • Oscar Taveras was 2-for-6 with a triple.
  • Reggie Williams was 1-for-3 with a triple and a walk.
  • Patrick Elkins was 2-for-5 with a double.

The Cards are investing in Hill by giving him a lot of innings at catcher. Hill can play at Memphis next year.

    • Chris says:

How can Hill play at Memphis next year when the Cardinals sign another washed up back up catcher (hopefully Cody Mckay or Gary Bennett are available) and refuse to give Bryan Anderson a shot at a spot on the bench and further drain his prospect status yet again at AAA?

      • rydeshelby says:

Anderson may still become the ML backup next year, since he has improved. The Cards are trying to make Hill into a catcher. Both Cruz and Hill could bump up to Memphis in 2011.

        • SoonerfanTU says:

This. Anderson had no business in the majors before about halfway through this season. He appears to be doing enough on offense to be a big leaguer, thought I don’t know where his defense stands. Think I read it had improved as well. I’d like to see him get the backup job next year as well.

          • Chris says:

I hope so as well. The Cardinals have spent some high draft picks and done a pretty good job collecting some catchers the past couple of years with Cody Stanley, Robert Stock, Audry Perez, Steven Hill, Tony Cruz, Luis De La Cruz and Charles Cutler to name a few. I feel catcher is definetly a position of strength in our farm system and that most on this list are ready to move up to a higher level and I would like to see what they could do.

  2. Grant says:

Anybody think Steve Hill could fill a Stavinoha-type role for the Cardinals?

Hope all is well with Joe Kelly. I wonder if they will shut him down for a little bit now.

    • easy says:

I don’t remember that Hill has seen outfield time in the minors. It would be a nice luxury to have a third string catcher who could pinch hit but I doubt that they’d be able to squeeze him on the roster if he couldn’t fill in somewhere else.
We may have gotten a bargain in Gast. I believe he was originally expected to go higher in the draft but fell to us in the fifth round after a disappointing college season. Then he apparently did well in the college WS and has only given up one run in 12 innings at Batavia.

      • Clark says:

Steven Hill played outfield in the Arizona Fall League last year

      • JC says:

Gast had TJ during his Senior year of HS that moved him from a potential 1st Rd pick to a flyer in the 5th but didn’t sign. He has never really bounced back since TJ but if he can get a little more velocity back and some refinement he could be a nice bargain pick for sure.

      • Felonius_Monk says:

Wasn’t Gast signed in the 6th or 7th? I thought Longmire was our 5th round guy.

    • bigchieftootiemontana says:

Would like to see Stavinoha fill the Stavinoha role the rest of 2010 and DFA Randy Winn.
John Jay can play center when necessary.

  3. ridgesee says:

Correction: Steve Hill did not “a home run” he hit 2 home runs and also has 84 rbi’s. Could he be another Smokey Burgess. I know you don’t know who Smokey Burgess is but he was probably the best part time and pinch hitter of the 20 th century. Made Matt Stairs look like a banjo hitter.

    • Gruntosaurus says:

Interesting comparable! I’m old enough to remember Smokey Burgess, and yes, there are some similarities. However, before Burgess was an extraordinarily effective pinch hitter, he was also a very capable catcher whose kill rate on stolen-base attempts reached 50% in some years according to B-R. Hill has a ways to go before he reaches that. OTOH, Burgess lasted until he was 40, so if Steve can get this defense thing down …

  4. GDM says:

is this is the last year Pete Kozma spends in the organization?

    • Zach says:

How can you figure? He has no trade value and the organization spent a first round draft pick on him..he has at least a couple more years by my count…not that he should, the hyperbole from spring training still makes me sick. I hope he turns it around and I have nothing against the guy, from all accounts he put a lot of work into his game, but he’s not even a top ten prospect at this point. Best case scenario he would be a September call up this year; suffice to say, he’s won’t even be an Arizona fall league call up at this point

    • Cash says:

I hope not, I have a big rooting interest for him because he is from my hometown. I still see a lot of promise in him, but I am especially worried because it seems he may not be suited to be a big-league SS, since he has like 31 errors this year. Maybe i move to 2B could help him? I think he has what it takes to be a good ball player, but he has to step it up NOW though to save himself.

  5. Andrew says:

I’m real interested in what they do with Hill as we have alot of good catchers in the system that actually play the position.

  6. Andrew says:

No way Kozma is gone after this year, he’s a first round pick and the SS in our system are VERY weak. Solano will probably still be at Memphis, Kozma still at Springfield, Jackson at PMB again and Castillo in Quad Cities. I really believe that SS is the weakest position overall in our system.

    • jjray says:

Agreed but we have two young SS at MLB and AAAA level (Boog and T. Greene). They give us time to find and develop a young SS. Still, the Kozma draft pick really hurts.

  7. Jim H says:

Isn’t it a little early to project a kid who just turned 22 4 mos ago and is in AA ball washed up?
