FirstInning’s player linker is down (has been for a week now), which is why you won’t see the player’s automatically linked.
- Ruben Gotay was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk.
- Nick Stavinoha put one over the fence.
- Joe Mather walked twice in 4 PA.
- Bryan Anderson was 1-for-3 with a walk.
- Jim Rapoport was 3-for-4.
- A rough outing for Brandon Dickson who was blasted for 11 hits in 5 innings. He allowed 6 runs (5 earned) while walking 3 and striking out 5.
- Chuckie Fick pitched a 1 hit, 2 K inning.
- Matt Carpenter went 1-for-2 but walked an impressive 3 times.
- Brian Broderick struck out 3 in 6 innings. He allowed 1 run on 2 hits and 2 walks.
- Blake King walked 2 and struck out 1 in 1 IP.
- Adam Reifer struck out 1 in a scoreless inning. Reifer has been outstanding this year. He’s gotten a hold on the hit rate and is striking out a batter an inning with a 4:1 K:BB ratio.
- Luis Mateo was 2-for-3 with a walk.
- Eric Fornataro was touched up for 4 runs (3 earned) in 3 innings. He allowed 6 hits and 3 walks while striking out 2. Fornataro, like a lot of the Cardinals starters in the system right now has decent command strikeout rates but well above average groundball rates. His stuff may not succeed against better hitters as he moves up the organization though.
- Nick Greenwood tossed 3 scoreless frames allowing 3 hits, 1 walk and 1 strikeout.
- Nick Longmire was 3-for-5.
- Chris Edmundson was 2-for-5.
- Nick McCully was touched up for 6 runs in 3 innings.
- Travis Lawler shutdown Vermont for 4 innings striking out 5 and allowing just 2 hits.
Johnson City 7, Elizabethton 4
- Cody Stanley was 1-for-2 with three walks. Stanley continues to impress with a .909 OPS.
- Kleininger Teran and David Medina went 2-for-5.
- Roberto Reyes was 3-for-4 with a double.
- Patrick Elkins was 3-for-5 with a HR.
- Reggie Williams was 2-for-5 with a triple.
- Hector Hernandez and Ryan Copeland each struck out 3 in 4 innings of work. They allowed 2 runs and 1 run respectively.

It’s gonna be interesting to watch how the big league bullpen is put together in the next couple of years with guys like Sanchez, Reifer, and Samuel climbing the ladder. Samuel’s BB rate worries me, but I’m looking forward to seeing Sanchez and Reifer in St. Louis.
Samuel seems to be doing better with the walks in Memphis I think. Also interested to see how the AAA hitters are hitting off him. Was the Memphis game in Reno or Memphis? Worth noting that Tony Cruz left the Springfield game injured in the 2nd inning. Also solid start for Hector Hernandez he’s been roughed up some lately but I think he’s one of the most talented leftys in our system.
He’s only thrown 3 innings at Memphis, walking 7 and striking out 2.
I love his stuff, but he still worries me quite a bit.
Who else would rather have Stav than Winn with the big league club? To be fair, I would like to see Mather up as well. We could use the depth at 3B. Is it the case that Mather is still working back from injury, or is he pretty much healthy by this point?
Not a fan of Winn or Stavi. Winn has shown he can hit when its against a right hander. Unfortunately he absolutely butchers the OF. Stavi does nothing but hit and not very well. He’s been living off his 2 HR most of the year and every other clutch situation this year he takes the same knee on the ground swing but K’s instead. If Winn would just be used as a lefty off the bench it’s fine but don’t put either one in the OF.
Winn’s been an excellent corner OF his whole career. Whilst it’s not implausible he’s on a steep downslide at his age, forgive me for not putting too much stock in a couple of awkward errors in a couple of months of part time play.
Why isn’t Gotay up is what I want to know. If he can play a passable 3B he would be better than Miles, though convincing anyone to get rid of Miles might be tough.
TLR wants vet’s he knows, so he knows what he’s getting. can’t blame him for that, he is older and wants to win now. He likely won’t manage 5 more years, so why not try now to win? unfortunately, that doesn’t set with the reality on the ground of having to get kids into the team to save $$ so as to sign AP. Gotay is not a kid, but would be cheap, as would Mather (who seems to have recovered his swing, wrist injuries take a long time), and Anderson. I can see all of these guys with the team next year myself, don’t know if I can with Tony there. And I can’t blame him for wanting to win in his last few years. If the team is truly going to go to a kid oriented approach, and this is more or less forced on him, I think Tony will soon retire.
I think that the Springfield Cardinals are getting better and more confident with every game. Kopp, Broderick, Additon, McGregor, King, Buursma, Eager and Reifer are all having outstanding years as pitchers and Pham, Luna, Hill, Scruggs,Cruz,Swauger, Brown, Garcia and Carpenter are having outstanding years in the field and at the plate. I think that it would be extremely difficult to point out any one player on this team as the most outstanding player. and I fully expect that Springfield will win the league in 2010. It will be very interesting to see who gets invited to winter ball and big league camp this year, and it will be most interesting to see who gets protected on the 40 man roster.
Rumor has it Cruz was pulled from the Springfield lineup due to a possible pulled hammy (the part about being pulled is not rumor).
Cruz was put on the DL. Cutler to Springfield.
Those to be protected will most likely be the ones they have spent bonus money on, and those to go to AZL will be those they want to see play against better hitters and pitchers, and not needing rest for the off season.
Springfield is doing well because they have a common goal, function well as a team unit, not necessarily because they have outstanding talent. Sometimes chemisty works better than a group of very talented players playing for their own benefit, which you see often in milb.
My understanding is that Pop places much emphasis on teamwork. For him, no i in team.
FYI – VSL had there last game yesterday
And none too soon, based on their W/L record. Has anybody distinguished himself there?
Only promising hitters on that team that I see are Breyian Valera and Jem Angeml
Yeah I was following Valera somewhat this year he seemed to have a good year
