As Jon predicted in our comment section for last night’s DFR, Steve Hill has been called up to the big club as Jeff Suppan has been placed on the DL.

Kyle Lohse’s start in Reno last night probably made Suppan’s DL trip possible.

Would love to see Hill get an AB during his cup of coffee, but he is probably up as Yadi insurance.

Discuss.

Would be better to call up Anderson. Better D than Hill. Have a feeling TLR will just use Hill as a pinch hitter/late game blow-out backup C … not giving Yadi any full days off.

Remember that Yadi did get an unexpected day off Sunday. He’s probably good for a few more days while they sort out LaRue’s situation.

I’m glad to see Hill arrive, having touted him for quite some time (and no, we’re not related, to the best of my knowledge). Can’t help but wonder, though, whether this is a harbinger of dangling him as trade bait as soon as the LaRue business and the possible (likely) Molina suspension are sorted out.

      • Felonius_Monk says:

He has no trade value, so I can’t see him being “trade bait”. People really over-rate the value of our fringe prospects and non-prospects. Nobody is trading for a guy that there’s 2 or 3 of in every minor league system.

        • Mike G says:

And some people also undervalue our prospects. Assuming he has shown some ability to catch by now, there are hardly two or three catchers in every system with his kind of power. That doesn’t make him the next Bench or Campanella, but he’s a long way from having no trade value.

          • Andrew says:

I tend to agree just because we don’t see him as a huge prospect doesn’t mean he may not ping on the radar of other teams. Many teams look for a offensive player first in a catcher. The Cardinals organization have different priorities and are willing to go with a great glove/light hitting catcher. Leading the Texas League in HR and RBI’s is pretty impressive for a catcher.

            • Felonius_Monk says:

He’s only started 17 of 30 games at catcher this year. He’s 25. I imagine you could demote quite a few MLB backup catchers in their mid-20s to double-A and have them OPS .895. And obviously it’s key to his value that he can actually catch – the Cardinals don’t seem too convinced that he can. I guess time will tell – I’ll be very glad to be wrong!

              • Jeffery says:

Just for the record Hill had 68 starts at catcher in Springfield with 593 innings caught this year.

I believe Hill will end up in Memphis and one of the Memphis guys will be brought up if LaRue hits the DL.

Big surprise – good for the kid but is he only going to be up for one day or so? If not, considering Yadi could be suspended and LaRue could go to the DL, why not Anderson? Do they really see him as major league ready? They must or else this doesn’t make a lot of sense

  3. azruavatar says:

Not to take anything away from Steve Hill but this might be related to Memphis being out West.

  4. Correct – With Memphis in Reno, no one would have been able to be in Cinny by game time.

    im a genius

  6. db says:

that is true about the travel, but also Anderson took a foul ball off the helmet and is sitting out a couple of days
