I asked the question previously, but it was not answered, does MacLane have the stuff to be a short reliever? If not, then neither he nor Robertson have any value going forward, and nobody else in the system seems to be ready to help at the major league level if Reyes or Miller need to be replaced this season or next year.
I am referring to lefthanded short relief. The system seems to be covered as to righthanded short relievers.
I remember haering the name Sam Freeman earlier in the year, but I don’t know what has happened to him. I may look his stats up later when I have time. The bullpen is an area where the Cardinals can really save some money, though, if they can just develop one lefty reliever next year or in 2 years. Although I don’t like to think of him as a specialist, if Anthony Ferrara’s arm cannot handle starting, he may be a very good reliever in the next 2-3 years.
Freeman has been sidelined by injuries — shoulder surgery I think.
Freeman had Tommy John elbow surgery in March. Thank God it wasn’t a shoulder! I expect him to come back fully recovered early next year (I’m a believer that TJ surgery can actually make a pitcher better). He actually had a major league camp invite this past year. I would expect him to start at Springfield and if he proves recovered to quickly jump to Memphis.
gorgen?
injured also?
I don’t believe they do have the stuff to fill in at the MLB level if Reyes or Miller are sidelined for any length of time. Plus, they just released Pinto whom I had figured they’d keep for a while and see if they could turn him into something usefull…..apparently they couldn’t.
Robertson is now released also, so they have no lefthand options that I know of
So that means that if Reyes and/or Miller are not brought back they will need to find a left handed relief pitcher(s) from outside the organization, at least in the short term. That area, along with starting pitchers (Wainwright, Carp, Lohse, Westbrook) may, in the near future be the only on the 25 man roster not from the farm system.
I realize that Ryan Copeland is a college graduate (he’s making Illinois State fans proud), but his numbers at JC are strikingly good. Might he have the stuff to be a major league reliever? Has anyone watched him in person?
Don’t know if anyone noticed it but apparently Anthony Garcia of our GCL team was given a start at catcher yesterday and caught a shutout. Earlier he had played outfield and was our hottest hitter on that team. Interesting if he could make it as a catcher.
He was drafted as a catcher and played there almost exclusively last year. He played almost strictly in the OF earlier this year but has been catching occasionally the last few weeks. Don’t know what there long term plans are for him in regard to catching though.
Thanks
