Johnson City spoils a perfect night for the minor leagues, but there was a Tyrell Jenkins and Roberto De La Cruz sightings!
Onwards and downwards on the screen!
- Lance Lynn brought his good stuff tonight with 11 count’em 11 strikeouts over 6 innings. He walked 2 and allowed 5 hits and giving up a solo HR for his only runs allowed.
- Matt Scherer, Eduardo Sanchez and Josh Kinney each pitched an inning to finish off the game.
- Matt Pagnozzi was 1-2 with a 2 run HR and also walked. Matt, take a bow, that’s your first HR of the year.
- Ruben Gotay also added a solo shot for all the runs scored.
- Joe Mather had a double.
- Brian Broderick, he of differing opinions, went out to prove people wrong tonight and he succeeded (sorta). He took the win over 6 innings striking out only 3. But, he allowed 9 hits but limited the damage to 1 run.
- Ramon Delgado pitched 2 no hit innings for the hold.
- Adam Reifer who is as under the radar and steady as a prospect can be who closes in AA everyday and has moved up a level a year and averages about a strikeout an inning struck out 1 in 1 inning for the save. Naturally.
- Chris Swauger had the biggest of the 3 hits for the S-Cards tonight with a 2-run HR.
- Daryl Jones, who has been moved to 8th in the order and Jermaine Curtis had the other 2 hits.
Palm Beach was off.
- Eric Fornataro took the rock for QC giving up 6 hits and 3 runs. He walked 3 and struck out 2.
- Daniel Calhoun got the win with 2 innings and 4 hits. He moved to an amazing 8-0 on the year. (That must mean he’s good, right? Right?) He struck out 3 and walked none.
- Jose Rada got the save with a shutout inning with a walk, strikeout and a hit.
- Ivan Castro lead the way with 3 singles and an RBI.
- Freddy Parejo had a single and a double.
- Edgar Lara went 1-4 with a 2 RBI double.
- John Gast continues to sparkle in Batavia and had another solid outing. He went 6 striking out 4 but walking an equal amount. He limited the damages to 4 hits and 1 run.
- David Funky Kington and Travis Lawlerskates finished the last 3 innings.
- Nick Longmire was 2-3 with a double and a walk.
- Geoffrey Klein was 2-4 with a double.
- Joey Birdman had two walks and a double.
- Tyrell Jenkins is on the Shelby Miller 2009 plan and started the game and pitched only 2 innings. He allowed no runs, but allowed 2 hits and 2 walks. He struck out 1. Here’s the quick and dirty scouting report: Tyrell Jenkins had less than stellar control tonight. Sat 89-91 MPH. 26 pitches, 13 strikes, 4-for-9 first pitch strikes.
- Kevin Siegrist took the loss with 4 runs (1 earned) allowed in 2 innings.
- Charllan Jimenez pitched the next 3 allowing 2 unearned runs striking out 3 and Francisco Guzman pitched the last 2 shutout innings.
- Roberto De La Cruz makes his first appearance for a DFR-level squad and promptly goes 0-4 with 2 Ks.
- Romulo Ruiz had the only real highlight for JC with a double.

Batavia looks to have won its division. Gast has been terrific, Longmire as well.
Johnson City has clinched, so gave try outs to Roberto and Romulo. Johnson City dethrones perennial winner Elizabethtown Twins. Great job.
Lance Lynn post All-Star break: 3.13 ERA, 60.1 IP, 17 BB, 60 K. You’d like to see the GB ratio go up (1.02) on the year, but his control and K:IP ratio has been a lot better since the first half. It’d be nice if they could wipe out Lohse’s contract and just replace him with Lynn next year in the 5th spot. Couldn’t do any worse.
It will be really interesting to see how Roberto De La Cruz responds to the promotion for the rest of the year. It’d be great to see him improve the BB and K%. He still has plenty of years to develop that aspect of his offense.
I’m trying not to get too excited about the performance of Nick Longmire so far, but it’s hard not to. The comparisons to Chris Young seem very accurate. Not that you can depend a lot on 63 games worth of data for me to make a comparison like this (and Chris Young was in AA when he was Longmire’s age), but the consistent power and speed (as well as K and BB%) Longmire is displaying right now are very similar to what Chris Young was producing at his age in professional baseball. However, as I said, you can’t depend on a comparison like that with 63 games of data and the fact that Young was in AA by the time he was 21. It’d be nice to see a full scouting report from somebody who’s consistently gotten the opportunity to see him hit in Batavia.
I doubt you see much more of Roberto De La Cruz at JC this year. He played last night because that was the “bench” game after clinching the division the night beofre.
Matt Adams has injured his elbow and is out for the rest of the year (including the playoffs).
That sucks.
That really sucks! With Albert’s resigning looking iffyer I was hoping Adams would move quickly through the system. Any word on if it’s something that could effect his career?
why exactly are people saying that his re-signing is getting “iffyer?”
The only time I hear it is when someone on a blog writes it in their comment.
It’s hard to expect too much out of Jenkins when he sits out the entire summer, and he’s already kind of a rough pitcher already.
Is Jenkins a starting pitcher prospect or is his future more of the bullpen/closer variety?
Oh I think he is definitely viewed as a future starter or we wouldnt have drafted him so highly and paid so much over slot for him. I’ve never heard reliever mentioned in regard to his future.
Definitely a starter at this point. He has the potential to have 3 above avg to plus pitches. He is raw so it will take some time…so be patient with him next year as he works through a lot of growing pains.
I don’t know why, but I thought he was always looked at as a reliever. I must have him confused with someone.
All reports I have read up to the draft and after have him pegged as a raw starter with potential to have up to 3 above avg to plus pitches. Control and delivery are a question mark right now but that is expected with a 4 sport athlete that hasn’t focused enough time on pitching yet.
I think it was Keith Law who made the comment that Jenkins isn’t as raw as some people are making him out to be.
Jordan Swagerty and Seth Blair, the Cards’ other two high pitching draft picks this year, both have some reliever talk attached to them. Blair has been a starter up ’til now but the caveats about his command needing work has led to some mention of relief work, and Swagerty was a closer in college. The Cards are going to try him as a starter as well for now, but he’s got a smallish frame and big effort in his delivery so the prevailing thought has him in the ‘pen long term as well.
Maybe one of those guys is who you’re thinking of?
Yeah, I think it’s Swagerty. Not sure why or how I got it in my head, but that’s got to be it.
I had previously asked if anyone had a scouting report on Chase Reid.
Similarly what is the report on P Ramon Delgado and Jose Rada? It seems the Cards are developing a number of right handed short relievers. Are Reid, Delgado and Rada guys that we think can ultimately surface in the majors? If so they can either help at that level or become trade chips.
I think Reid is way too far away to project much at this point. Delgado and Rada join Frevert and Buursma as unhyped relievers who continue to get results. These pitchers will have to compete with failed starters turned relievers ans they move up making it tough to become noticed. I’d say if 1 of the 4 I mentioned above gets anything more than a major league cup of coffee than we should consider it a success.
I’ve heard Reid seldom breaks 90 mph on the radar gun. He has to get by on command a changing speeds. Don’t take that as Gospel though.
Thanks. I know Buursma is a sidearmer. Anything on Delgado or Rada? Thanks, in advance, again.
Four errors for De La Cruz in one night: “fielding, fielding, fielding, fielding.” Sounds like the first-game yips to me.
Lance Lynn has an ERA of 3.13 in his last 10 starts. 60 innings – 60 K’s – 55 hits – 17 walks
nice to see him ending the season pretty well.
Definitely encouraging. He should get a long look in ST with a strong 2nd half. But personally I hope he starts back at AAA next year to get another solid half at a high level before they consider him for a promotion. I see a true workhorse #3/#4 in the future though.
We need a sixth starter stashed in AAA next season. Who really thinks Lohse will stay healthy? Garcia has an injury history as does Carp. Lynn is fighting PJ and Otto (who knows what to expect from him) to be the first starter called up in 2011. Either way I gotta believe Lance Lynn gets some starts in the MLB in 2011. Cards fans have to be pulling for him to be successful to avoid having to dig up the corpse of Jeff Suppan once again.
a nice end to the season and a nice number of innings pitched – he’s currently at 153 this year and pitched 148+ last year – looks like he might really be the innings eater that he is supposed to be – and, like JC, I expect Lynn to start in AAA next year and be the potential 5th starter when injuries hit at the major-league level
Good study… but last night was his 11th start since the All-Star Break, so his stats look like this:
IP H ER HR BB K ERA W L G GS
66.3 60 22 10 19 65 2.99 9 2 11 11
According to Tom Tango’s Projections of AAA into MLB translation, this would be his line for MLB:
61.0 66 31 15 24 49 4.57 6 2 14 8
This would be comparable to anyone we have in the #5 starting slot for 2011. That seems like a lot of homeruns, but Lynn is pitching in the PCL, I am not sure that Tango takes that into due account. ZIPS & CHONE has perhaps a more realistic homerun figure.
ZIPS has Lynn projected :
119.0 124 64 14 55 77 4.85 5 7 28 23
CHONE projected him at 12 HR allowed and a 4.68 ERA.
Of course, projections are not based on actual performance… as in the case of Jaime Garcia though, no projection study ever gave him a chance of putting ROY figures up in his first full season.
As Joaquin Andujar would say, “ya never know.”
The Arizona Fall League rosters have been announced (well, at least partially). Cardinals players participating are:
Pitchers-
Brian Broderick
Blake King
TBA
TBA
Hitters-
Tony Cruz
Pete Kozma
Adron Chambers

The last TBA was listed under infielders. Had read Cox was likely to go to the AFL, so I’m guessing it’s him.
