Arizona Fall League Rosters came out today and the Cardinals are sending 5 players so far with 3 more Cardinals to be announced (probably after the minor league playoffs).
All the Cardinals are on the Surprise Rafters.
Pete Kozma (SS), Tony Cruz (C), Adron Chambers (OF), Blake King (RP) and Brian Broderick (SP) are going to be playing in the AFL this fall.
- Rich Rundles struck out 2 in his 1 inning of relief and the other pitchers are better off staying out of the DFR – for their own health.
- Tyler Greene had 3 doubles.
- Amaury Cazana hit his 13th HR of the year, a solo shot.
- Mark Hamilton also went yard.
- Joe Mather had a single, a double and a walk on the way to 2-4.
- James Rapoport also had a 2-4.
- Ryan Kulik started the game and only went 4 innings giving up 5 runs. It wasn’t super pretty.
- Trey Hearne the reliever pitched 2 shutout inning in long relief.
- Scott Gorgen made his second appearance since May and struck out 2 in his inning.
- Daryl Jones had two singles and a walk. He was also picked off and stole a base.
- Andrew Brown had the only other walk and Aaron Luna had the only RBI.
- Arquimedes Nieto, my favorite junkballer has lost his mojo as the end of the season nears, but he has pitched over 140 innings so far this season between two levels. Even science needs a rest now and again.
- Joel Pichardo and Matthew Frevert had the only two shutout outings.
- Jared Bogany had a triple.
- Ryan Jackson had the other Cardinals hit.
Quad Cities 16, Cedar Rapids 10
- Joe Kelly gave up 9 runs (8 earned) in 3.1 innings. I’ll leave that grody line alone. Check out the recap if you are interested in some gore. 7 errors for the River Bandits tonight.
- Chris Corrigan got the win with 2.2 innings allowing 1 unearned run.
- Nick Greenwood pitched 2 shutout innings and Aaron Terry struck out 2 for a shutout 9th.
- Devin Goodwin had himself a night with 8 (8!) RBIs through a 3 run HR, a double and a single. He also walked.
- Raniel Rosario had a 2 run HR.
- Alan Ahmady was 3-5 with a double.
- Luis Mateo was 3-4 with a double and two walks.
- Robert Stock was 2-5 with a double.
- Colin Walsh had a three bagger and three walks.
- Obviously from the scoreline it was a bad night for the Batavia pitchers, but I’ll highlight 3 good performances.
- 47th round selection Justin Wright pitched 3.2 innings and struck out 6 batters, walking only 1.
- Travis Lawler got in the DFR with 2 shutout innings.
- Keith Butler also had a shutout inning.
- Audry Perez had a grand slam and 2 walks.
- Victor Sanchez (26th rounder) was 2-5 with a HR.
- Chris Edmondson had a single and a triple.
- Matt Valaika had a double and a single.
Johnson City 3, Elizabethton 9
- This was an odd game as JC had already clinched their playoff spot, so they shuffled the lineup as soon as this game got out of hand.
- Boone Whiting pitched only 1 inning, gave up 2 unearned runs and took the loss. He struck out 2 and got his other out on a ground out. Sorry, Boone.
- Hector Hernandez got blowed up in .2 of an inning giving up 6 runs.
- Iden Nazario (round 30) struck out 5 in 2.1 innings.
- Romulo Ruiz and Anthony Garcia had doubles.
- Greg Garcia had a triple.

Unusual number of Redbird farmhands heading to AFL. Makes me think JMo wants to get a second look at players who are on the bubble for protection on the 40 man roster. If that speculation is correct, it does not bode well for former 1st round selection Pete Kozma. The organization has some tough decisions to make this winter.
is it common for top recent draft picks to go to the afl? in other words, will cox be one of the remaining three?
Cox will most likely go to the AFL. Brett Wallace went the year the Cardinals drafted him.
Will Shelby Miller be going to the AFL? How many players are sent to the AFL as “taxi squad”? It seems to me that Dickson has earned a spot to the AFL….maybe he will be on the “taxi squad”. It also seems like Hill and Carpenter earned a spot to the AFL. These young players need to find out if they can play with the closest to becoming major league players.
Dickson has put in too many innings, plus being in AAA he’s already faced rehabbing ML and potential ones as well. I don’t think the AZL is just about “earning a spot”, anymore. Plus I notice players get younger and younger every year.
The AFL’s purpose has changed. A ML scout told me that it’s used primarily now for those that need to put in more time (but don’t want them to go out of the country), and for those that the organization want to show off, for potential trade or as someone else pointed out, considering protection. Perfect example would be Brent Wallace. Kozma, as far as I know is not eligible for the 5 year draft, so for him just could be more work for improvement or it’s time to consider him for a trade. I also don’t think that Cox was drafted for the big league club, but rather for an important trade like they used Wallace.
I am kind of in question about Broderick, he has logged a lot of innings, will be interesting to see if he really shows up, though he won’t pitch much, he still will have to throw daily and do bull pens, he I could see on the taxi squad.
Kozma is eligible for the Rule 5 draft. Most HS players drafted the year he was are not but he is because he was already 19 at the time. It is actually based on age the time of being drafted/signed rather than whether HS or college.
Thanks, I keep forgetting that! :)
Be curious to see how Chambers does in the AFL. I got him on the back side of my Top 10 going into next year and think he is fairly underrated.
Nick Greenwood with an 8.2 GB/FB ratio at QC over 20.1 innings, which is beyond ridiculous.
Greenwood has put up good numbers since joing the RiverBandits
I would like to see Carpenter in the AFL. I think the number he’s put up show he needs to get a look.
I think Chambers falls into the “needs to put in more time” as Pinch stated. In looking at Memphis’ stats, he hasn’t hardly played. Not sure why you would bring a guy up and let him sit. They should have sent him back to Springfield to play on a more consistent basis much like they did Luna.
