Note: Be patient with the DFRs this weekend as I’m unsure what kind of internet access I’ll have. I will do what I can to post in a timely manner.
- A tough loss as Memphis in chasing Iowa to finish off the season on top of the standings.
- Memphis had just 3 hits and 5 walks in the low scoring affair.
- Brandon Dickson struck out 7 in 5.2 innings. He walked 4 and allowed 7 hits for 2 ER.
- Matt Scherer came into the 6th and stranded the bases loaded. In the 7th, he allowed 1 ER.
- Eduardo Sanchez pitched a 1 hit, 1 unearned run while striking out 1.
- Daryl Jones was 1-for-4 with a walk.
- Andrew Brown was 3-for-4 with a double and a walk.
- Jermaine Curtis was 2-for-4 with a double.
- Nick Derba also went 2-for-4 with a walk.
- David Kopp struck out 5 in 6 innings. He allowed 1 ER in 6 innings of work on 7 hits. Kopp didn’t walk a batter leaving his regular season K:BB rate at 90:50 this season.
Palm Beach 2, Jupiter 5 (7 innings)
- Jared Bogany was 2-for-4.
- Palm Beach had 6 hits and 3 walks.
- Richard Castillo allowed 4 runs and 5 hits in 4 innings of work. Despite throwing all his innings in pitcher friendly Florida State League, Castillo’s numbers are quite bad.
- CJ Beatty was 2-for-5 with a HR. Beatty has struggled to hit for average this year though he’s done a decent job of taking walks and hitting for power.
- Ryan Jackson was 3-for-5. With an OPS just over .700, Jackson’s path to the majors relies on him maintaining some minimal level of offensive abilities while flashing some sick leather.
- Scott Schneider went the distance with probably his best outing of the season. He struck out 8 batters allowing 1 run on 5 hits and 1 walk. Schneider failed to replicate his Quad City numbers in Palm Beach as his GB rate, BB rate and K rate all went in the wrong direction after the promotion. He ends the season, however, with a K:BB rate is just shy of 3.
- Michael Swinson was 2-for-4 with a HR.
- Raniel Rosario was 2-for-5 with a triple.
- Michael Blazek allowed just 3 hits and 2 walks in a solid 8 inning outing. He struck out 5.
- Jose Rada struck out 1 and walked 1 finishing off the game in the 9th.
- Chris Edmundson was 2-for-3 with a HR.
- Audry Perez was 2-for-5. Perez hit over .300 and tallied a .818 as a catcher in the NY-Penn league.
- Joey Bergman was 2-for-3 with a HR and a walk.
- Yunier Castillo was 2-for-4. He maintained his heady walk rates taking 6 free trips to first in 182 ABs.
- Zach Russell struck out 7 in 5 innings. He allowed 3 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks. Russell was striking out a batter an inning but had sketchy command leaving him with just a 2:1 K:BB rate.
- Travis Lawler struck out 2 in an inning of work.
- Greg Garcia was 3-for-5.
- Oscar Taveras was 3-for-4 with a double. Taveras is approaching a .900 OPS as an 18 year old in rookie ball.
- Kleininger Teran was 2-for-4 with a double. I’m also convinced that danup only likes his name because he types it once a year. Trying to remember the names, levels and spellings of 6 teams is . . . challenging with names like Kleininger thrown in. But yes, cool name.
- Virgil Hill went yard.
- Cesar Valera was 2-for-4.
- Boone Whiting has been the most dominant of any 2010 draftee on the mound. He added to that tonight with 7 strikeouts in 6 innings while allowing just 5 hits and 1 ER. On the season, Whiting has an incredible 68:5 K:BB in 54 innings. Simply dominant.
- Trevor Rosenthal struck out 2 in a perfect 8th.
- Hector Corpas followed that up with a 1-strikeout, perfect 9th.

I’d love to read a full scouting report on both Virgil Hill and Taveras.
Kopp’s K rate is less than 2:1 on the season but it is over 3:1 over his last 10 games (59IP).
Andrew Brown has his OPS up to .900
Has anyone else noticed Kieth Butler (21 y.o.) for Batavia? His K rate is over 14 per 9IP! (49K in 29.1 IP w/ 15 BB)
Butler is a guy I’ve been keeping an eye on all season. Those K totals are pretty impressive.
Anyone got a scouting report on him?
Springfield had a good chance to clinch a playoff spot last night until Jones misplayed a fly-ball to center that allowed 2 runs to score. The clubhouse was “prepped” for a celebration, but the win was denied. They loaded the “prepping s” onto the bus and hopefully they will be able to celebrate tonight. Kopp pitched well enough to get a win, but the offense couldn’t get a hit when players were in scoring position……10 hits should produce a win, but not last night. I heard several people saying that they think that NW Arkansas might consider letting Tulsa beat them so they don’t have to play Springfield in the playoffs. I don’t buy that theory….does anyone else have a thought about that rumor?
Where do you get this information? Maybe 2 runs isn’t enough to win. But 7 runs is(the night before). They were winning going into the 8th once again like the night before.I do recall… A base hit , hit batter(a pitching change…kulik to face a LH) and he gives up a rocket over Jone’s head not a flyball allowing 2 runs to score. Who started that rumor about NWA? Really?
Another AA Highlight — Andrew Brown hit a 2-run homer for Springfield’s only runs.
Two nights in a row the Springbirds bull pen has imploded badly, so I wouldn’t blame the loss on Jones.
Carpenter is in a slump, they need his bat badly. I do agree they failed to get the runs across, at this time of the year, putting it all on the pitchers shoulders to win is tough, they need run support. They have been hit hard by losing Hill, Pham and now Cutler. Though if Memphis doesn’t make the playoffs, Hill can return to Springfield on an exception. Yet they still play for a purpose.
If NWA did what you say is a rumor, that would certainly make them look badly in the eyes of the League and I am sure that their players and coaches take more pride in their game. If it were to happen, would be very disappointed in the Royals organization. If they really didn’t want to face Springfield, they could have given up games weeks ago. Now if this is something the players come up with themselves, none of them deserve to move to the highest level of the game. That’s what I call poor sportmanship. If I were the manager, I want to be able to say my team won both halfs of the entire season, wouldn’t you, that’s a big accomplishment considering they too have had many come and go in the second half.
In mentioning Kopp, lets not forget that he has 20 double plays on the season in Springfield. Cutting down on walks has been an achievement, and you are always going to see more hits than strike outs, that’s just the type of pitcher he is. I don’t think the organization has an issue with that at all.
On Castillo, az. I don’t disagree that his numbers aren’t great this year, but let’s remember that he doesn’t turn 21 until mid October. Still plenty of time for him to develop.
The fact that Castillo is still young would be a lot more relevant if he was improving instead of regressing.
I’m fully expecting Boone Whiting to be brilliant for about one more year then get hammered once he reaches about Double A. I hope I’m wrong, but I think he’s another in the school of PJ Walters/Trey Hearne type pitching prospects. Prove me wrong, Boone.
Big difference to me between Walters and Hearne. IF he is Walters though, that’s fine. An 18th round pick that proves to be worthy of a shot at a #5 rotation spot is still getting more than one should expect.
Congratulations to Thomas at Palm Beach for being Organizational player for August. Congrats also to Rosalio QC.
Great job. There should of been a few PB players selected for FSL all star team.
This off topic, but my friend was telling me that one of Stan Musial’s grandsons plays for the Cardinals in the minor leagues. Does anyone know if this is true?
He may have been thinking of Blake King, who is actually Mickey Mantle’s grandson, not Stan’s. I know we had signed Bob Gibson’s son out of the Indy League for a little while, but released him a couple years ago. I don’t think we have any of Stan’s descendants in the system.
Mickey Mantle was Blake King’s great uncle not grandson.
