Springfield finally got their postseason underway after the rains only to get extra baseball! Memphis moved to a commanding 2-0 lead thanks in part to a Top Prospect finally finding his stride? One affiliate is headed home for the year while another has a deciding game tomorrow night.

Cards actually shave a game off the NL Central lead and have me a sweep of the Braves away from believing this team could make the postseason. After all the frustration you’ve put me through this season, Cardinals, you owe it to me for a glorious mad-dash to the finish.

On to the DFR!

Memphis 3, OK City 2

  • James Rapoport went 2-for-4.
  • Allen Craig, Joe Mather and Mark Hamilton (2B) all went 1-for-4.
  • Reuben Gotay went 1-for-2 with a 2B and RBI.
  • Toni Cruz went 1-for-3 with a 2B.
  • Donovan Solano went 2-for-3 with a R.
  • PJ Walters helped the Redbirds move to a 2-0 lead with 6.2 IP of 7 H, 2 ER baseball. He struggled with command walking 5 but still struckout 7. He did it on 111 pitches.
  • Rich Rundles got 1 out in the 7th with a K.
  • Adam Reifer went 1 IP with 1 H and 1 K.
  • Josh Kinney went 1 IP with 1 H and 1 K picking up his 2nd save of the series.

Springfield 4, NW Arkansas 2 (12 innings)

  • Pete Kozma gave Springfield a lead in the 8th and then the victorious margin in the 12th with a pair of HRs. He went 2-for-6 with 3 RBI.
  • Aaron Luna went 2-for-6 with a 2B.
  • Andrew Brown went 1-for-3 with a 2B.
  • Matt Carpenter went 1-for-4 with a 2B.
  • Antonio DeJesus went 1-for-3 with a 3B.
  • Scott McGregor threw 7.2 IP of 2 R (1 ER) work. He gave up 9 H but only 1 BB and struckout 2.
  • Ramon Delgado worked 2.1 scoreless innings with 2 K.
  • Scott Gorgen picked up the win with an IP that featured a BB and 2 K.
  • Blake King was handed a lead in the 12th, and despite a BB and 2 H, was able to get 3 outs (1 with a K) for the save.

River Bandits 4, Kane County 5

Muckdogs 0, Tri-City 1

  • Batavia didn’t get a hit after the 4th inning, only getting a runner on via HBP the rest of the game.
  • Christopher Edmondson went 1-for-3.
  • Victor Sanchez went 1-for-4.
  • Juan Castillo went 1-for-3.
  • Andrew Moss went the distance and was the toughluck loser, giving up only 1 ER on 4 H. He walked no one and had 5 K.
  • The Muckdogs were eliminated from the playoffs after an exciting playoff series. See you next year boys.

So Kozma had 2 homers, huh? How many errors… just kidding. It’s good to see him having some late-season/playoff success. Hopefully this can be a positive turning point in his professional career and he can go into the off-season with a high level of confidence in his abilities. His “slap” hitting, defensive footwork, and mental ability have appeared to be his major weaknesses. If he can continue to re-tool his stroke in the off-season, work on his defensive footwork, and build his confidence, he may finally enter next season with the mental capacity and tools to succeed.

    Also, good season, Muckdogs.

Doesn’t Kozma have like 15-16 HRs? I would hardly consider that “slap hitting” for a Shortstop. Heck, even if he has to move to 2B, I would take 15 HR.

    • dk says:

Yeah, he obviously has some power, but from what I saw last year (haven’t seen him live this year), he had a bit of a tendency to slap the ball instead of driving it. Maybe it’s more of a timing or balance issue. I remember reading others’ comments who said he had a similar approach/problem this season. Can anyone who has seen him recently please evaluate his current swing and discuss the progression of his swing?

the shelby miller scouting report is up at BP

  4. Lou Schuler says:

Kary Booher’s blog at the Springfield paper says that Tommy Pham is considering eye surgery for an ongoing problem that causes blurred vision. I didn’t know he was dealing with that. I can’t imagine how you can play baseball with impaired vision.

  5. Jim H says:

Lets not forget that Pete has almost always if not always played in leagues where he was one of the youngest players.

    • Scott says:

As disappointed as many have been in Kozma this year, he’s actually had some bright spots.

I believe he led TL shortstops in home runs and slugging percentage. In the top 10 of all TL hitters in walks. Top 15 in hits. Top 15 in HR. #3 shortstop in terms of OPS.

Personally, I’m not concerned with the 34 errors. Last year in Springfield he had 25 but was a +8 fielder by TotalZone.

I’m missing it. Who’s the Top Prospect who finally found his stride in the Memphis game?

  7. Cardinals645 says:

Interesting news: Scott Gorgen’s TWIN brother got traded from the Rays to the D-Backs.

Also, if you have a BP subscription, Kevin Goldstein did a scouting report on Shelby Miller.

  8. dan from fl says:

do not where to post this. 2005 draft year of HS OF. 1 Justin Upton, 10 Cameron Maybin, 11 Andrew McCutchen, 12 Jay Bruce, 28 Colby Rasmus I think Colby is the best of the group. McCutchen is close second.

    • dan from fl says:

      stats OPS
      Upton 806
      Maybin 682
      Bruce 807
      McCutchen 786
      Colby 875

      • Vision says:

Plus Bruce is an elite defender.

      • Gruntosaurus says:

Rather surprisingly, Raz is the oldest of these five, and may possibly be closer already to his ceiling than they are. I think Upton, in particular, has a chance to be better by the time he’s in his prime, if he develops well — which can’t be taken for granted. In any event, I’m perfectly content to have Raz. Here’s hoping he and TLR can resist Passan’s attempt to make a True Story out of them.

  9. db says:

Josh Kinney has pitched in 5 consective games for Memphis and I agree he should be in St.Louis but won’t and will probably be a minor league free agent.

If QC wins tonight, hopefully they can add a couple of the Batavia guys. Michael Swinson was hurt in the first game and Cody Stanley, up from Johnson City, hurt his shoulder warming up. So they are down 2 guys and have to play Ross Smith and his .190 avg in CF now.

  10. JC says:

I couldn’t wait till tomorrow for the DFR to throw this out there. Lynn was pitching for Memphis tonight and was dynamite! 7IP 3H 1ER 0BB and 16K’s! YES 16K’s! Good time for Lynn to throw his best game of the year! Memphis won 6-2
