I’m pretty jealous of Kevin Goldstein. Beyond the fact that he has an awesome day job of discussing bsaeball prospects all the time, he’s also seen Shelby Miller four times this year in person! I’ve seen nine Quad Cities games and zero Shelby Miller appearances. Boo!

KG saw Miller in his latest start during the playoffs against Kane County. Miller was dominant over 7 innings and Goldstein has a full scouting report on the Cardinals top prospect:

Summary: Between body, delivery, and stuff, Miller has easy frontline starter potential, as 9/8 playoff start was best performance by a pitcher I’ve seen all year. Previous looks do create concerns, although potential for improvement is significant. Don’t see much projection in fastball, but doesn’t need it, and shows enough high-quality curveballs to project for a 70/60/50 repertoire only seen in star-level arms. Improved control/command throughout season and could be poised for ’11 breakout.

I’ve been critical of Baseball Prospectus in the past (and they still need to clean up their UI experience — their stats sections are awful) but between Goldstein’s continually awesome prospect reports and the additions of some “hardcore” sabermetric types (namely Colin Wyers), it wasn’t a hard decision to re-up my subscription last week.  The teaser above is just a small part of the awesome writeup that Shelby got from Goldstein.

Springfield finally got their postseason underway after the rains only to get extra baseball! Memphis moved to a commanding 2-0 lead thanks in part to a Top Prospect finally finding his stride? One affiliate is headed home for the year while another has a deciding game tomorrow night.

Cards actually shave a game off the NL Central lead and have me a sweep of the Braves away from believing this team could make the postseason. After all the frustration you’ve put me through this season, Cardinals, you owe it to me for a glorious mad-dash to the finish.

On to the DFR!

In 2009, Tyler Henley spent the entire season at Springfield accumulating, over 473 plate appearances a .383 wOBA. In 2010, he’s had 157 plate appearances and the results have been dismal.

First, a footnote about the big league club.  Last week I said that this would be an important stretch for the Cardinals.  If they were going to make up ground on the Reds, they’d probably have to do it now.  Since then, the Reds went 1 – 5, which should have allowed the Cardinals to move within 4 games with 3 weeks left to play.  Unfortunately, the Cardinals took that opportunity to go 3 -3 and still sit a daunting 6 games back.  They will need some truly bad play by the Reds against some not-so-good teams to make up that ground.  It’s still possible, 2 games a week the rest of the way out but with the way the Cardinals are playing, they should strive to finish the season above .500.

What a wild night in the farm system! A taste of the playoffs, some games going down to the final out while others featured a truly epic performance. Be still my beating heart!

On to the DFR: PE!

Pretty straightforward here. Three prospects that took a step forward in 2010, and three that did not. Let me know y’alls three up/three down in the comment section, too.

Only Batavia was in action as the minor league playoffs get underway.  Hit the jump for the DFR: Playoff! Edition! as I resist the temptation to insert a Jim Mora youtube video.

Congrats to the Memphis Redbirds who made the PCL playoffs in their last regular season game today!

Let’s quickly run down the success of the minor league teams this year. Palm Beach was the only squad not to make the playoffs.  This is certainly not a be-all end-all status report of the health of the system, but I can remember recently when the minor league affiliates were in last place in all levels. This is better!  Better players make better teams who win more games.  Easy right?

Memphis: playoff berth
Springfield: playoff berth as a wild card
Palm Beach: 4.5 GB in the 1st half, 2 GB in the 2nd half
Quad Cities: Won division in 2nd half to make playoffs
Batavia: Won division to make playoffs
Johnson City: Championship!

Congrats to the Cardinals affiliates who made the postseason. On to the end of the regular season DFR!

Reporting from Quad Cities, Memphis makes some noise in the second to last game of the series.

What’s up, folks? The Cardinals are attempting to take a series from Cincinnati today, while I work on materializing a Tony La Russa v. Colby Rasmus cage-match. Some good people around the interwebs produced insightful thoughts, check em’ out:

- Our friends at PlayAHardNine took a good look at Rasmus’ approach at the plate. It’s broken down into two parts:  Part 1 & Part 2.

- Daren Smith of MiLB.com recaps Johnson City’s Appalachian League Championship well here.

- Jay Hulsey of i70Baseball.com profiles Tyrell Jenkins.

- Adam Foster of ProjectProspect listed Daniel Descalso as a Top 5 Second Base Prospect.

That’s all I’ve got. Have a great Sunday, everybody.
