Welcome to the DFRs Arizona-style after the jump the less than stellar debut of Zack Cox. Ole!

Surprise Rafters 8, Peoria Javelinas 6

  • 1st round pick Zack Cox got his first taste of high-level minor league ball and the Arizona Fall League ate him alive.  Cox got awarded with his first:

He was 0-5 with 4 strikeouts hitting 3rd from the DH slot.

  • Tony Cruz was the only other Cardinal in the game and he went 1-4 with an RBI, starting at 1st base.

Golden sombrero out of the gate. Bummer.

    • Gruntosaurus says:

Maybe not such a bad thing. A little humility for someone who starts with a major-league contract is not out of line, as long as it doesn’t crush him, and Cox doesn’t seem like the type to be easily crushed.

      • jjray says:

Yes, I expect Cox to shake it off like it didn’t happen. Bummer nonetheless for Cardinal nation licking its wounds after such a disappointing season. Any good news out of the AFL would help assuage the pain.

you have to remeber that Cox is a little rusty. Only played in 4 GCL games this summer. I would expect him to rebound well.

  3. Purple Haze says:

Hopefully he gets more chances to play the infield soon.

So Matias/Martinez now has a work visa and will be in the US for Spring training…name change was due to birth name being Martinez but living with an Uncle named Matias and taking his Uncle’s name.

    • cariocacardinal says:

But that doesn’t explain the age discrepancy which got him suspended and his first contract voided. I think the P/D’s only got half the story – the positive spin half.

      • rydeshelby says:

The first contract that was voided was only for $160,000 bonus. Martinez was fortunate it was voided, because in the new round of bidding, he had improved his pitching and landed nearly 10 times the previous bonus.
BlindWagnerMateo lost $2.6MM after his first deal fell through, while Martinez went up $1.3MM.

      • Travis says:

I see your point, but with him getting a visa what does it matter? He is eligible to pitch for the Cardinals and gets to joint the club. If he lied to try and get to the majors so what. We know who he is now and we are still thrilled to have him. cannot wait to see what he can do against better competition.
