Surprise 5, Scottsdale 9

  • Tony Cruz was 1-for-4.
  • Pete Kozma was 0-for-4.  He also committed his second error in 9 games.
  • Adron Chambers was 3-for-3 with a walk. Chambers also stole three bases off of different pitchers, so I’d wager a guess that Derek Norris of the Washington Nationals’ affiliate needs to work on throwing out base stealers.  Chambers has been enjoying his time in the AFL thus far and while he hasn’t been hitting for power he’s posting a nifty .370/.406/.407 line.
  • Brian Broderick pitched 4 innings allowing 5 runs on 9 hits. He also committed a throwing error.  Broderick struck out 1 but was tagged with 2 HRs.

I hope Chambers “enjoying his time in the AFL” doesn’t result in behavior changes at the plate. Part of his minor-league toolkit has been the ability to draw a walk. In Arizona … not. Of course, if they’re chucking it down the middle so you can bat .370, your opportunities for walks will be few and far between, so I don’t see it as a problem that he’s not walking there, just as long as it doesn’t carry over to next spring and summer.

He’s walked 3/30 PA in AFL. He walked in around 12% of PA during season. Not a huge difference considering sample size. I’m not worried

Weird. You’re quite right. When a BA is that high, the “normal” 10% BB/PA rate makes a curiously small contribution to OBP. His BB/PA rate really isn’t contrary to previous experience at all … which makes his batting average unequivocally a Good Thing.
