I wonder where Tony Cruz fits in the big picture, with Pags, Anderson & Hill clearly above him. I think the whole minor league catching situation is pretty interesting – I think it would make a good post, analyzing defense vs. offense, coaching, ect
Good idea. If Cruz is adequate at catcher he could be a very valuable reserve at catcher, first and third.
Pags outrighted to Memphis today (according to a post on another site). Basically a realease as he will become a minor league FA. Almost guarantees we will sign a veteran backup (unless Mo really wants to force TLR to keep Anderson).
Man, I’m shocked by this news. I thought TLR and Dunc were having a love fest with Pags this past Sept. The 40 man roster crunch is worse than I imagined. Joey Bombs was an expected casualty. Pags is a surprise, although I personally would be happy with Anderson as the backup in St. Louis for 2011.
Confirmed at mlb.com. This is doubly unexpected since Pags briefly managed to give the illusion that he was capable of hitting major-league pitching. I thought surely he’d be pried out of TLR’s cold, dead hands after that.
It looks like they’re actually paying attention to the AFL. I couldn’t understand why they would send their #4 minor-league catcher there rather than someone with more of a chance (sic) to make it to the Show — Matt Carpenter, to be precise. Between the way Cruz is hitting there and this move (which, I think, does not distress many of the Cardinals faithful), it looks like there is method to their madness.
I hope Pags does catch on with somebody, though, because he was backup catcher on my All-Ugly team. Have you seen the guy’s team picture?
I would guess Carpenter didn’t get the AFL invite because the Cards opted for Cox. It’s was probably one or the other but not both. Cox desperately needed to play so I’m down with that call (if in fact that was the situation the Cards were faced with).
Cruz is moving Pagnozzi elsewhere. Pags has no future with the Cards.
Its good that the Birds are making some room for others by moving out Pagnozzi and Mather.
I would say Cruz is a plus over Pags all around!!
i’d rather they cleaned the stav out than the beav
I think Moz is slowly cleaning house. I doubt that Mason being fired was LaRussas idea. I doubt he had much influence on this decision.
An acid test of JMo’s authority will be whether or not he can keep Miles off the 25 man roster in 2011. I don’t know if JMo is that powerful. It will be like Odysseus trying to the resist the Sirens Song. Few mere mortals have such strength. Someone, T. Greene or Descalso, will win the utility IF job out of ST but then an injury crops up with one of our infielders putting him on DL. Greene struggles. Then Tony starts the Siren Song, “Miles, Miles, where art thou Miles? He that soothes all a team’s woes.” There’s Miles tearing up the independent league. They’ll pretend it’s just a temporary fix until whoever gets off the DL … but Miles never goes away without being pierced with a strategically placed silver stake. I just don’t know if JMo has that in him.
