Put on your optimistic hats!  Matt Carpenter had a banner year in 2010 at Springfield and the consensus, for all intents and purposes, expects him to repeat those results at Memphis in 2011. Numbers after the jump.

I’d peg Carpenter around .300/.380/.430 for next season. I obviously tend to toward the pessimistic projections for Carpenter but I still think he’s one of the best prospects in the system.  If he hits our slash stats, well, he’ll be a highly valued commodity by the time 2011 is complete.

PS — If anyone knows why I’m having issues with what I think is my cell padding (I’d like some more space around the numbers) then please leave a comment. I’ve tried various padding values but it doesn’t seem to format it the way I want.

AZ, maybe this link will help: http://www.pageresource.com/html/table1.htm. Keep up the good work!

    • azruavatar says:

The padding adjustments works when I’m viewing the table in the WYSIWYG editor but it doesn’t render properly on the page in my browser.

      • mikey_mac says:

There’s a line in the site’s CSS that sets the margin and padding of EVERY page element to 0. This style is being applied to each table cell, overriding the table’s inline cellpadding value.

If this line of CSS is not part of the back-end stylesheet, it would explain why it previewed properly before publishing.

A day without prospect news/discussion is like a day without sunshine :(

I think it’s safe to say we are in agreement, azru, so you can probably guess which line is mine. I wonder about his power, as do most, but the funny thing is I always thought of him as David Freese 2.0. Freese broke out to the tune of 26 HRs and a .911 OPS when he jumped from A+ in the Padres org. to AAA Memphis, a jump largely attributed to his advanced age: 25. Still, I see Carpenter taking a different, more Boggsian route to prospect-stardom.

I agree that his route will be more Boggsian. I hope he keeps site of the fact that obp is his ticket to a starting job in the majors and doesn’t think he needs to satisfy the standard power expectations for third basemen. He won’t be Boggs but, if reports are right, he might be better defensively.

      • Nikolaz says:

i totally agree and i would totally love to see what he can at the AAA level cause of how much of a hitters park hammons field but it was nice watching him last year cause i live in springfield

AZ, and everyone, for all the effort in this discussion. As CC said these discussions bring some sunshine as a blizzard approaches.

    • Gruntosaurus says:

It says much, though, that the single largest group of comments has to do with formatting a web page, doesn’t it?

Anyway, I agree, thanks, everybody. The long winter of the soul ends in a few weeks … but sunshine, baseball style, is needed until it does.

      • easy says:

It does say much and my feeling is that padded cells should be avoided altogether. Baseball talk goes a long way towards that end.
