Dan, I believe Boston signed him as a SS. During his yearlong suspension somebody figured out he had more potential as a pitcher. If it hadn’t been for his sketchy backstory, you have to think an 18-year-old with an 80 fastball on the scouting scale would’ve commanded a lot more than $1.5 million. A high-schooler in the U.S. might’ve gotten multiples of that.

Also De la Cruz is just making to the put up or shut up stage of his career. He has shown some power tool and I understand he has a chance at having a good glove…far from saying he is dead, far from saying he is a star in the making.

So, in other words, Daric Barton and Brett Wallace (two guys on MLB rosters) are the best 1B developed in our system since Albert Pujols.

This is how myths (and legends) get started. De La Cruz was not signed for $2.4 million. The reported amount was $1.1 million.

remember b4 we signed Martinez for $1.5 mil, Boston had him signed for a lot less, forget how much but well under a million, and then he developed. if you sign a guy for whatever amount and he develops, you’ve got a bargain. there is no way to say which guys will and won’t develop, remember De La Cruz, our $2.4 mil Latin player? payed a lot and have gotten very little. not to say he still can’t develop, but the amount you spend is not a directly related to the outcome in scouting baseball players. rather be lucky than good.

We have actually signed quite a few they say but the info gets released very slowly. The SS was signed 5 months ago and they are only now announcing it.

Yea, but “biggest signing since Martinez” means nothing. Mark Hamilton is the best 1B developed in our system since Albert Pujols. Just means we haven’t done much with 1B since then (not counting Barton and Wallace, who were traded). If he were nearly as good as Martinez, he’d have been paid as such.

That said, I’m excited enough to want more details. Any MIF help for our farm system is wonderful. His age would be a good start, as would his strengths/weaknesses.
