Agree with buchek's point on the way the Cards keep churning out MLB right handed relievers. I've lost track of how many we dealt in the last two seasons (Perez, Todd, and Gregerson) yet there is train of right handed relievers bubbling up the Cards minor league system. It's the one currency the Cards have to barter with MLB trade window. It's like the Cardinal nation version of Tyrian Silver shekels at Herod's Temple, the only accept currency.

Gotta say I agree with those observations.

Don't know why, but when I see M. Carpenter I think of a young John Mabry. And I'm not trying to say they're even similar ballplayers. It just always comes to mind. Maybe it's the whole not-using-batting-gloves thing.

Craig needs a lot of at-bats over the long haul this season, if we're to get the most of his abilities. And when I look at Craig's swing I think of a young Kenny Boyer (if only that could come to pass--even part way.)

The story on Kelly out of amateur ball was, of course, he had a live arm and lots of velocity, but maybe not the type of physical build to stand up as a long-term starter. He seems to have met or exceeded expectations in that regard--so far. Maybe his MLB niche, though, will eventually be in the pen--and that's not a bad thing either.

Like a lot of folks, I've been anticipating the start of E. Sanchez's MLB career for a couple of years now. When you look at who they traded away for K. Green and M. DeRosa, the Cardinals have produced a lot of really nice right-handed relievers. Middle infielders have been as uncommon as rare orchids. But relievers--hell, they've been coming up like dandelions in our system.

M. Carpenter has Tony's grit lust working, which is a good thing. Tony's comfort level with M. Carp allows the club to firmly place Craig in the outfield, where we will really need him given Berkman's health and inability to hit lefthanders (he's not even batting right handed now). Saw J. Kelly's nasty power two seamer for the first time today (televised). Wow. This guy could be a weapon out of the pen with a bit more control. I wonder how long they will keep him as a starter. If he is sent to the pen he'll move quickly up the ladder. Eduardo Sanchez is ready for the show.

I actually saw ALL of the our Future Redbirds today, minus the ones is Lakeland. If anyone is at Spring Training I highly recommendgoing out to theback fields and watching our whole minor league system at once. Today AAA played AA and the Class A players played each other too.

This doesn't have as much to do with the 5th starter role, but the Cardinals game was on tv today and a re-run is starting now on FSMW. Some of our favorite future redbirds got some playing time, including Eduardo Sanchez, Joe Kelly, and Matt Carpenter, to name a few.

I was hoping that Lynn would ride his second half hot streak from last year into spring training and take the last spot in the rotation. Didnt' work out that way but I, like BD, am worried about Garcia so it's going to be important that Lynn get his mojo back.
I've always thought of Dickson and Walters as very good AAAA pitchers with little chance for a major league career. Still do.

Spring ball really hasn't changed my view of any of our pitchers that our close to helping the parent club. Lynn has showed that he is close to being ready, but is prb better off with another half year or a lil more at AAA before coming up here, so not at all a bad 6th starter type for if/when on of our current starters go down. Glad to see KMac pitch well, but as ive posted before, am worried about two things with him: 1. can he hold up all season as a starter after never really being able to do so in the minors with the injuries and all and 2. he was very valuable as a jack of all trades reliever to our relief corps, so kind of opens up that spot that someone else has to try and take over. Overall, we arent bad shape as while id prefer Kmac in the pen overall, its still nice to be able to put Lynn back in AAA a little longer to hopefully help his longterm growth and value to the parent club.

I guess the only real change has been a slight gain in my previously underwhelming appreciation for Dickson. K-Mac has won this one fair and square. Lynn still has reasonable chances of being useful.

Spring has changed nothing. The question is now, who is the 6th starter if/when the next one goes down. I am still terrified (worried) about Garcia's health. Is that 6th starter Batista, or one of these two?
