I’m trying to figure out why Martinez will be behind Miller after this season fleshes out. The kid has a couple plus pitches, the best fastball in the system and pinpoint control. Could it really take longer than 2 years to develop a passable change? What am I missing?

I coached summer league at that level and I always thought that approach side of hitting and pitching were entirely missing from kids earlier development. You kinda have to accept a kids mechanical skill set at that level, but many have never been exposed to mental aspect of how to hit in certain counts or pitch to their strengths. This make a huge difference in middle tier of players outside of the couple stars you have on the team and ultimately increases win totals quickly.

Utilize pickoffs. All kinds. Every base.

Third base especially. Use a balk move. HS umpires either don’t or can’t really call it due to positioning.

Martinez has sick stuff. The thought of him and Miller coming to the big leagues at the same time (or about the same time) seems like a dream.
Throwing this out to the community- I am coaching varsity baseball for the first time this year. Anyone have any tips, suggestions, etc that could be helpful? (First year coach in the St. Louis Public High School League)

So the legend of Matias Martinez is really true? I thought he might turn out to be chupacabra and then do battle with Lord Marti there in Jupiter for control of the solar system.

Tim, I went ahead and used the name Moses – heh

I believe Jenkins threw yesterday, but I had to head up to RDS after Martinez was done. Wanted to see Carpenter — my apologies.

Sometime early next week I’ll hopefully have up clips of Miller, and hopefully Blair and Swagerty, too.
I’ll also have my thoughts on Martinez, Blair, Swagerty, Cox, Miller and a few others — not that anyone should care about my thoughts.

Currently, I am on the beach, so ill be brief on Martinez. All I can say right now is this: If he is behind Miller at all as a prospect, it isn’t by much.

I personally enjoy the laughing from the crowds of minor leaguers I was around in the video where the poor kid takes 98 on the hands for a weak grounder.

Hard to tell with the video, but the second half of his delivery looks a littler rushed. Obviously a live arm, though!
