The Cardinals fielded three teams against the Marlins minor leaguers today.  Some interesting names make the list tonight with both good outings and less good ones. The system still seems to be sorting itself out as the pitchers are all throwing a couple innings and there are some less known names getting playing time. This kind of stuff shakes out as players trickle down from the upper levels and others get released.

Game 1: Cardinals 6, Marlins 5

  • Adam Reifer had a perfect, 1 K inning.
  • Richard Castillo tossed two innings allowing 1 hit and striking out 1.
  • Andrew Moss and Justin Smith were responsible for the runs allowing 2 in 2IP and 3 in 1.1 IP respectively.
  • Nick Greenwood retired 5 hitters, 4 via strikeout.
  • Nick Longmire was 2-for-4. Longmire was drafted in the 5th round of the 2010 draft. An interesting college outfielder with better projection than results, he had a rather astonishing start in his pro career hitting .287/.372/.483 at Batavia in 309 PAs.  Keep an eye out to see if that was a inequity of competition level induced fluke.
  • Edgar Lara hit a 2 run HR. There’s a qualifier that it was an impressive shot over the fence – not a dinky dinger apparently.
  • Francisco Rivera singled and walked.
  • Alan Ahmady doubled and walked.

Game 2: Cardinals 6, Marlins 5

  • Anthony Ferrera was shelled for 8 hits over 1.2 innings allowing all 5 ER.
  • Zach Russell retired 7 hitters (2.1 IP) with 2 strikeouts and 5 groundouts.
  • Dean Kiekhefer pitched a scoreless, two strikeout inning.
  • Romulo Ruiz was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.
  • Matt Valaika was 2-for-4.
  • Jonathan Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. Rodriguez scored the game winning run on a heads up play featuring a passed ball by the catcher.
  • Adam Melker singled and walked twice.
  • Victor Sanchez and Virgil Hill both had a hit and a walk. Sanchez doubled.

Game 3: Cardinals 5, Jamestown 9

  • Boone Whiting allowed 5 ER in 1.2 innings of work. Another 2010 draftee with an incredible start to his pro career, Whiting doesn’t have the stuff to match his utterly dominant 2010 start. He struck out 68 in 54 innings (11+ K/9 IP) and was a stingy walker with just 5 (<1BB/9IP).  He’s certain to regress to more average rates but his 2010 performance put him on the list of ones to watch.
  • Scott Bittle also had a rough outing getting tagged for 3 ER in .2 IP.
  • Steven Ramos was 4-for-4 with a double.
  • Ross Smith was 2-for-4.
  • German Medina was 1-for-3 with a walk.

Good to see Steve Ramos go 4-4 yesterday, he was a late round pick from a community college and seems to have some speed as he had 15 stolen bases in limited action last year. Has anyone seen him, i would like to know what kind of player he could become, because based off what ive read and seen, he looks like he could be an Adron Chambers type.

Zack Russell intrigues me. I have never been able to find out anything about his HS career which led the Cards to draft him in the 49th round. He struggled his first couple of years but last year he led the NYPL in BAA while K’ing more than 1 per innning. He was also slightly younger than most of the college pitchers that pitched in the league.

I love me some Longmire! Been on his bandwagon since the draft. To me a legit RF prospect with all the tools to be above avg. Also a guy that goes all out which never hurts his perception with the fans and coaches.

Agreed, Longmire was exactly the kind of guy we should try to take in the 5th round every year with his upside! Like you, very excited to see what this year brings because he has 5 tool upside and great work ethic, will be very interesting to see how he adjusts to the full season clubs, but he is that type of guy that if everything or close to everything clicks, you have a very very nice prospect.

    Have we all underestimated Augenstein?

    • He’s looking pretty good so far!!

    • Vision says:

Augenstein had very good equivalents, and has been a sleeper among the sabermetric crowd for a little while. Not sure what his ultimate ceiling is, but having a decent 6th/7th starter available can be valuable in today’s game.

I never want to be seeing the Hawksworth/Suppan kind of backup plan again.
