Make sure and read the recap for the QC#2 team. Impressive pitching performance.

Memphis 2, Buffalo 0

  • PJ Walters threw 6 shutout innings allowing 3 hits and two walks while striking out 5. A much better outing than his last spring effort.
  • Nick Additon threw a pair of perfect innings striking out 1.
  • Jason Buursma pitched a scoreless, 1 hit inning.
  • Andrew Brown was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles. Even if Brown rakes, I don’t see a place for him on the big league squad.
  • Bryan Anderson went yard.

Springfield 3, Binghamton 2

  • Deryk Hooker struck out 1 in 2 IP.
  • Brett Zawacki was touched up for 2 runs (1 earned) in 2 innings on 3 hits. Zawacki struck out 2.
  • Jesse Simpson and Sam Freeman pitched a scoreless frame.
  • Casey Mulligan struck out 1 in his inning of work.
  • D’Marcus Ingram had a big offensive day. He went 2-for-4 with a double and scored the winning run in a play sequence that included his steal of second.
  • Ryan Jackson was 2-for-4 with a triple. Jackson hit slightly better than the average player (not shortstop) at both Quad Cities and Palm Beach last year. If he can maintain some measure of offense, his defense has the ability to propel him to the big leagues. His starting assignment seems tied to Pete Kozma‘s and I expect Jackson to start at Palm Beach again for the first portion of the season.

Palm Beach 6, St. Lucie 3

  • Maikel Cleto struck out 4 in 2.2 innings of work. He allowed 1 run on 1 hit and 2 walks.
  • Jorge Rondon pitched 2.1 innings allowing 2 hits and 1 ER. He struck out 3 and walked 2.
  • Chase Reid struck out 2 and allowed a hit in 1 IP.
  • Edgar Lara was 2-for-2 with a homerun. One of the more interesting positional battles at the lower levels is Lara and Matt Adams who both had good years at Quad Cities though Adams was considerably better statistically. Neither would be well equipped to man the outfield so expect to see them rotate between first and DH at Palm Beach in the short term.
  • CJ Beatty went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks.
  • Travis Tartamella was 2-for-2 with a double.
  • Frederick Parejo tripled.
  • Francisco Rivera doubled.

Quad Cities #1 5, Savannah 14

  • Carlos Martinez pitched 2.1 innings allowing 4 hits and 1 walk for 1 ER. He struck out 2.
  • Drew Benes and Cale Johnson imploded late in the game for 5 ER and 4 ER respectively.
  • Jonathan Rodriguez continues a torrid spring with a 2-for-4 outing including a double and a homer.
  • Cody Stanley was 2-for-3 with a double.
  • Victor sanchez and Christopher Edmondsun doubled.

Quad Cities #2 4, Gildea’s Raiders 0 (1 inning)

  • Trevor Rosenthal pitched 4 perfect innings with 9 strikeouts.
  • Aiden Lucas completed the no hitter with 1 inning, 1 walk and 2 strikeouts.
  • Roberto de la Cruz was 2-for-3.
  • Starlin Rodriguez singled, walked and was HBP. He scored all three times.

Impressive day by Rosenthal. Looks like we got a sleeper… Glad to see C. Martinez pitching again.

  2. VolsnCards5 says:

Ahem…ahem…2.25 k/ip for mr rosenthal….come on aboard, the bandwagon is nice;)

  3. Clark says:

It’ll be interesting to see what Rosenthal, and Martinez can do with a full season club.

    • Vision says:

I’m also interested to see what Bryan Martinez can do in addition to Carlos. His numbers were off the charts, and he has a great pitchers frame to add a few ticks of velocity, and remain a starter.

Not a star profile most likely, but a young guy already his pitchability and results gets your attention.

  4. VolsnCards5 says:

Well the Gildea’s raiders team is semi-pro, but still 9 k’s in 4 innings is impressive

  5. Andrew says:

Wondering where everyone starts. Will we get to see Rosenthal and Martinez in QC? That would be nice. I think Jenkins starts in Batavia and ends in QC. Gast starts in Palm Beach. Our system is alot better than people think.

  6. arknepp says:

anybody know where there is a good scouting report on Rosenthal?

    • Andrew says:

Not sure there is one yet, he’s a big strong hard thrower, sits about 93-94 with a good breaking ball I believe

      • RCHIII says:

Rosenthal sits 93-97 can touch 98. 4.5-1 SO’s to Walks last year. No walks in 6 innings on the mound so far this spring. Needs consistency with Change. Slider could be a plus pitch, FB obviously plus. May well end up sitting 93-94 given a 6 plus inning start. Turns 21 at the end of May.

        • BigJawnMize says:

That sounds like a high level reliever report…

          • RCHIII says:

It’s possible he might end up as a high level reliever, but he has the body type to be a starter. Based on the info. I have, the Cards want him as a starter. Slider is said to be MLB comparable and Change needs to slow down a bit more. He has time to develop these secondary pitches to pluses. I’m not sure where he is on the curveball. Guess I should have stated he also throws the split finger. The kid has an opportunity to be very good. Expect him to start at QC this year. If he does well, expect him in Springfield 2012.

John Sickels had this to write in “The Baseball Prospect Book 2011″

SLEEPER ALERT!! Trevor Rosenthal was a 21st round pick in 2009, from Cowley County Community College in Kansas. He very quietly had an interesting season last year in the Appalachian League, posting excellent K/BB and H/IP ratios along with a good strikeout rate and a 3.27 GO/AO. His control was much better than it was in 2009, and I have reports of him hitting the mid-90s with his sinker. We need to see what happens exactly at higher levels, but there are some very intriguing markers here, and he bears close watching in ’11. Grade C+.

John Rodriguez is this year’s Tommy Pham. Hopefully his regular season will go better than Pham’s last year (not that Pham’s ended up terrible).

  8. Andrew says:

Jrod’s manager raved about him last year and said even when he was hitting .235 during the first half of last year he was blistering the ball. He took it up a notch at the end of the year for sure making sure no one could catch the balls he hit wiht a few HR’s. No doubt the best hitting prospect at Batavia last year.

  9. Bob says:

Don’t know if J-Rod can play anything but 1B effectively, but he’s looking more and more like a real batter—assuming he can keep the whiffs under control. He controlled the strikezone well in ’09, and the power at Batavia in 2010 was terrific….

Lots of interesting arms in the low minors, huh? Carlos M. and Rosenthal, sure, but also Bryan Martinez, Javier Avendano, Zach Russell, Juan Bautista, et. al.

    • cariocacardinal says:

Is the questioning of J-Rod’s defense at 3rd based on a first hand report? My understanding is that 3B is his natural position and he only played 1B in 2009 and early in 2010 due to shoulder surgery he had on his throwing arm that should be 100% healed by now.

  10. riotmute says:

Am I the only one excited to see what Deryk Hooker can do this year? He seems to have good stuff and the org. clearly likes him – I think he may be one of the more overlooked prospects
