The Cardinals played some scrimmage matches today that included a solid outing from Lance Lynn, some more intrigue from John Gast and a Pete Kozmanaut sighting.

Memphis 8, Springfield 3
Memphis

Springfield

  • Raul Valdes struck out 3 in 4 innings. He allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits.
  • Nick Greenwood had a perfect frame with three groundouts. Interesting to see him in the upper leagues of the scrimmage. Greenwood spent 2009 with the Padres short season club, the Eugene Emeralds, in the Northwest League. This would be roughly equivalent to the Cardinals Batavia club in the New York Penn League. In 2010, Greenwood started out with the Fort Wayne Tin Caps — they of the angry apple in a . . . well, tin cap before becoming a Quad City River Bandit via the Ryan Ludwick trade. At 23 — he’ll be 24 in September — Greenwood doesn’t need to be coddled by a jump to Springfield seems unlikely when official roster assignments get released.
  • Casey Mulligan was lit up for 4 ER on 5 hits while retiring just 1 batter.
  • Ryan Jackson was 2-for-4.
  • Tyler Henley was 2-for-3.
  • Alex Castellanos, Aaron Luna and Niko Vasquez all had a hit and walked. Castellanos doubled.
  • Matt Adams hit a 2-run home run.

Palm Beach 4, Quad Cities 3
Palm Beach

  • John Gast allowed just an unearned run over 4 innings of work. He struck out 5 and walked 1 allowing 4 hits.
  • Phillip Cerreto recorded the game winning hit with a 2-run single in the 9th off Dean Kiekhefer.
  • Zach Cox was 2-for-4.
  • Luis Mateo was 2-for-2.
  • Mike O’Neill walked and singled in four trips to the plate.

Quad Cities

  • Anthony Ferrara struck out 5 in 4 innings of work walking 2 and allowing 2 hits.
  • Drew Benes struck out 4 in his 2 IP. Benes was tagged for one run on 3 hits.
  • Aiden Lucas pitched a perfect inning.
  • Michael Swinson was 2-for-2 and reached after being HBP.
  • Adam Melker walked twice.

Thanks to Farm Director John Vuch and staff for compiling the game notes that make the spring training DFRs possible.

Cox, Adams, Gast and Jackson keep appearing in these reports. Could Jackson really be developing into an average hitter? If so he may dislodge the current occupant at shortstop by next year.

    • Chris says:

Kozma’s name keeps appearing in these reports as well, he seems to be having a strong spring. I hope he’s figured something out and is ready to take a leap forward this season. The Cardinals could really use a strong year from him. I think there is a lot of intrigue surrounding his assignment, because the club seems to like Jackson quite a bit, and they both need to be playing SS every day.

A name that’s been absent in these reports has been Tommy Pham. Pham has always been a strong performer in ST as I recall, so I’m interested to hear what’s going on with him.

  2. Andrew says:

Little worried about Oscar Taveras……..haven’t even seen his name mentioned since 3/22

Same here, anyone have any idea of he hasn’t been playing or just hasn’t been hitting?

      • Andrew says:

I saw him play and he kind of jammed his hand into the fence but finished the game but didn’t look great in his AB’s after. This was the 20th I think. He looked good until that point and I really doubt he’s not hitting. Maybe workign with him on pulling the ball on inside pitches?

even though i know there’s still time for rosters to shake out, i’m a little bummed to see sugar shane hanging on and aaron luna and tyler henley back in the springfield mix.

  4. Gruntosaurus says:

Ah, but how many guys did Gast pick off? That’s the real question.

Sorry to see Casey Mulligan struggling.

    • Hugecardsfan says:

Yeah, hate to see Casey lit up. Reifer tool But, regarding Reifer, happy to see a big part of it was Matt Adams 2 run dinger.

      • Cards fan in Chitown #2 says:

Speaking of Matt Adams….. is he going to stay in AA? I think it’s great if they start him there, but on the other hand, is it a sign that they are pushing him because they know AP isn’t going to be back in ’12??…..

        • Andrew says:

Or it’s a sign that they are preparing just in case.

          • Cards fan in Chitown #2 says:

True….. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but at this point I’m leaning toward hoping they don’t resign him…. That much money tied up into him and Holliday for the # of years he wants is not good business and could screw us for a decade. Unless they basically make it Albert makes his $$ and then the other 24 players split around a $100M payroll, which Dewallet won’t go for.

  5. Andrew says:

I read somewhere that the reason they moved Luna to OF is he was clearly too fast for 2b. That’s crazy if he can play 2b he needs to stay there.

  6. Papa Joe says:

That brings up a question… do they time the guys when they show up to spring training?

    • Vision says:

Scouts carry a stopwatch religiously, and time everything, pretty much all the time.

Watch a professional scout around someone interesting sometime. It’s kind of humorous.

  7. easy says:

Does anyone know if there’s a site for minor league spring training stats?

  8. RJ says:

Has anyone heard anything about Bibona? I have not seen his name all spring. He put up Gast type numbers at QC so I would expect him to open at PB.

  9. Andrew says:

He was hurt during the week I was in Jupiter? Sore Shoulder……was in uniform just not throwing.

  10. Andrew says:

Sorry no question mark after Jupiter….he was hurt with a sore shoulder, saw him talking to some people. Nothing big just being careful with him.
