Shelby Miller ALERT!

We saw how shaky the big league bullpen can be and how opportunities may present themselves to younger guys as the season progresses. Likewise, that dead weight we have at 1B may be an issue that needs addressed soon as well (snark!).

On to the DFR!

Memphis 4, NOLA 3

Springfield 8, Jacksonville 4

Palm Beach 3, Jupiter, 4

Quad Cities #1 1, Greensboro 1

Quad Cities #2 3, Marlins 5th club 2

  • Hector Hernandez walked 3 and struckout 4 in his 4 IP. He gave up a H.
  • Wilson Matos threw 2 IP yielding 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB and 2 K’s
  • Tyler Lyons gave up a H and ER over 2 IP while logging 1K
  • Wednesday, Sean Watson signs his contract. Thursday he picked up his first pro save, giving up a H in 1 IP
  • Adam Melker went 2-for-4 with 2 RS
  • Christopher Edmondson hit a 2B, 3B, scored a R and drove in a RBI, going 2-for-4,
  • Ronny Gil (3 AB) and Ted Obregon (4 AB) both had a H.

Thanks again to the Vuch crew.

Real nice games from our pitchers today, glad that are giving Swagerty a try at starter.

Is Cerreto a big time hitter or just another Racobaldo?

    • cariocacardinal says:

I’m a Cerreto supporter but that is a fair question. Racobaldo was 15 months older when drafted and Cerreto showed much more power his first year. If Cerreto can only play 1B, he’ll have a tough time no matter what. If he can play 3B or the OF he might have a chance.

I liked what I saw from Edmondson last year when I went to watch Batavia play – any one have any thoughts on him?

    • cariocacardinal says:

I don’t know much about him but he seemed to fly under the radar last year with some decent stats.

    • JC says:

Edmondson was our 43rd Rd pick in 2010 and a guy that has some exciting tools. He has adequate power and will most likely get more power as he matures. He will get plenty of doubles and will hit somewhere in the middle of the lineup. He doesn’t have much speed so his ability to hit and D will be his ticket. A projected LF in the future.

Matt Adams is on here every single day!!

  5. Buckriggs says:

Haven’t seen Xavier Scruggs mentioned at all. Is he hurt or just out of the picture as far as first base for Springfield?

    • cariocacardinal says:

I believe I’ve seen him mentioned but sparingly. Looks like Adams has pushed him out of the 1B job at Springfield. Maybe he’s been on the back fields working on an OF transistion or something. The kid reached AA at 22 and has great power. Hard to believe they are giving up on him already.

  6. Jeff says:

Ronny Gil aka Grabriel Hernandez alert. Looks like he’s been verified by MLB to make it over to the USA.

With Holliday out with an appendectomy, I guess we’ll have a winner in the “Who gets called up first?” contest. So who will it be? Adron Chambers?

    • Cards fan in Chitown #2 says:

Any chance they don’t put him on the DL though?

      • JC says:

No chance of this happening. By most counts at bare minimum on these types of injuries you are looking at 2.5 or 3 weeks. Even if you are close to 15 days you go ahead and put him on DL to give yourself depth

        • Gruntosaurus says:

I wouldn’t be so sure, at least to start with. The fact that there are some weirdos who have come back in less than 15 days may cause the team to at least hold off on a DL move for a day or two, until they see how Lego is doing. A retro DL move is always possible.

Frankly, for all his shortcomings, Stav wouldn’t be the worst guy to add to the 40-man and bring up. (Can you say “Shane Robinson”?) If they cleared space by giving Batista his UR, I’d consider it addition by subtraction, and it would make room on the active roster for Salas or Sanchez — heck, ANY arm already on the 40-man would be more useful.

          • JC says:

Some guys have come back within like 11-12 days after. Is it worth it to hold out to maybe save 2-3 games while playing shorthanded a week and a half? Makes no sense to do this. I am 100% sure they will put him on the DL tomorrow and call someone up. My guess is Salas as we will have more of a need with RP’s with concerns over Garcia and McClellan going deep into games and only 1 day off in the next 2.5 weeks. Just my guess.

          • Tackle Box says:

If they put Stav on the 40-man and called him up, would they be able to send him down without putting him on waivers?

I’m assuming since he’s on a minor league contract, but I’m not sure how options work with that.

            • cariocacardinal says:

Stavi is out of options so he would have to clear waiverrs to go back down. I doubt anyone would claim though unless he showed something in the 2-3 weeks up that he hasn’t shown before.

        • Cards fan in Chitown #2 says:

Thanks, I’m not familiar with the surgery so wasn’t sure how long you were supposed to be out. With this road trip coming up and having Jay and Craig already…. I could see us bringing up an extra bullpen guy. I could see Salas coming up.

    • Karmaloop says:

I’d put good money on it being Nick Stavinoha. The bigger question is who to bat fourth. Personally, I’d put Rasmus fourth.

  8. Paul says:

We saw in the first game why the Cardinals are not going to win 80 games in 2011. I go back even to vague memories of Mary Marion. All previous Cardinal managers put
emphasis on up the middle defensive strength. They knew tha the Marty Marion’s and Ozzie Smith’s would mke the big play when needed and that they would not throw away games
with errors and inadequate range. The 2011 Cardinals may have the worst second-shortstop combination in baseball. Yesterday the big plays were made by the Padres. The higher
ERA”s of the Cardinal pitching will be one result. Losses in close games will be the other

  9. Tackle Box says:

    Who is Sean Watson?

the fangraphs link goes to a guy in the Reds organization who already has saves.

  10. Andrew says:

Had horrible stats in college but looked good in the 2 times that he pitched when I saw him. The most impressive thing about him is he’s a 6’9 lefty. He’s not a fire baller but he’s got some velocity. He’s a work in progress but I liked what I saw from him in Spring and he definately earned his shot.
