The farm goes 2-2, as Bryan Augenstein goes down to injury with the big club. We may have to say a fond farewell to one of our Memphis relievers, but only for a little while!
New Orleans 3, Memphis 2
- The Redbirds offense didn’t do much, with Bryan Anderson and Daryl Jones accounting for the only 2 extra base-hits of the night. Anderson finished 1-3 with a double, and Jones added his double pinch-hitting for P.J. Walters in the 5th
- Matt Carpenter and Nick Stavinoha both hit 1-4
- Shane Robinson led off with a line of 0-3, 1 RBI, and 1 BB
- Adron Chambers hit 8th and went 2-3 with a BB and K. His role with the Cardinals remains interesting, as he remains below Craig and Jay on the organizational depth chart. With Stavinoha off of the 40-man roster, he might be a Jon Jay injury away from reaching St. Louis.
- Pete Kozma went 0-4 in the 5th spot. There’s going to be even more pressure on Kozma to perform this year with Ryan Jackson knocking on the door in Springfield.
- Tony Cruz filled in for Anderson in the 7th and went 2-2
- P.J. Walters fell to 0-2 on the season with a line of 5 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, and 3 K
- Fernando Salas may have pitched his last inning in Memphis for a bit after striking out 1 in a scoreless inning of work
- It took the Cardinals 13 innings to squeak out 7 hits. In a night full of offensive fail, Ryan Jackson is probably the only batter worth mentioning. They went 0-12 with RISP
- Ryan Jackson continues his hot start after hitting 3-5 with a double and walk. The bandwagon is filling up, folks!
- Tommy Pham led off and went 1-4 with a walk
- Tyler Henley, Niko Vasquez, Aaron Luna, and Alex Castellanos all put up big goose eggs. The only saving grace for Henley & Luna was 2 walks each and an RBI from Vasquez
- The pitching performed well for Springfield. Scott Schneider had a solid effort of 6 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, and 6 K. He had 9 groundball outs compared to 2 in the air, and 5 of the hits he gave up were all singles
- Richard Castillo added 3 scoreless innings out of the pen. He gave up 3 H, 1 BB, and 3 K
- A wild pitch by Brett Zawacki in the 13th scored the winning run
- 8 of the 10 runs scored came in the first inning
- Zack Cox went 3-5 (all singles) with 1 RBI
- Rainel Rosario belted 2 HR’s in the first inning. He had 4 total hits on the day and 4 RBI’s. Talk about setting the table at the top of the order
- Edgar Lara hit a HR and double. He finished with a line of 2-5 with 3 RBI’s
- Travis Tartamella started at catcher and went 2-4 with a 2B
- Justin Smith gave up 6 runs and 8 hits in 4 innings of work. He struck out 3 and walked 2
- Virgil Hill made his season debut, and it was a good one. He finished 2-5 with a double and 2 RBI in the leadoff spot. He’s saving his first stolen base for another day
- Cody Stanley, Patrick Elkins, Yunier Castillo, and Michael Swinson had 2 hits each. All were singles
- Zach Russell made his QC debut and gave up 3 runs (2 earned), 5 hits, 4 walks, and 5 K’s in 4.1 innings
- Chris Corrigan earned the save by throwing 3 shutout innings of 1-hit ball

Let hope that Bryan Augenstein’s injury isn’t that servere. The guy may not have a 95 mph fb but he has great movement on his pitches and relies on getting the outside corners called for strikes. The HP Umpire tonight wasn’t calling the corner strikes which led to the Gibson ejection as well. Horrible strike zone tonight.
Looks like Salas and Sanchez will both be getting the call.
Salas AND Sanchez?
who else is hurt?
Tallet fractured his glove hand on that play at first. He is being re-evaluated in St. Louis to see if a DL stint is required, but Goold made it sound like the big club was calling up two relievers.
I don’t think Sanchez will be going up…just Salas. Memphis may lose their lefty starter to replace Tallet, if he goes. Re-eval today.
Gibson’s ejection was for the umpire twice calling a “checked” swing a swing…both times against Montero. Gibson thought he should have checked with the 3rd base umpire. The replay suggests Gibson was right.
I think maybe Sanchez for a couple of days until Salas is rested (he pitched last night). The problem with Valdez is he isnt on the 40 man roster. Also he has never had a strong L/R split. Plus he didnt exactly make the most of his chance this Spring.
Brian Tallet – broken glove hand. I would think they’d bring up a lefty to fill in his role.
Good for those guys getting promoted. The Domino effect though will be interesting. Not sure there are 2 relievers at Springfield ready for AAA or two at PB ready for AA. Hopefully this will give someone a chance to step up and surprise.
yeah, that’s another issue that comes up. If it were just one guy getting the call, Memphis could probably absorb the loss but with both guys gone, they have to fill it somehow.
might see a free agent signing for Memphis. wouldn’t surprise me a bit being just removed from spring training.
besides, isn’t Springfield pretty young as it is? I’m not sure about the pen but I know there are a lot of guys who were kind of promoted fast to get to Springfield. Advancing them up to Memphis facing all of those AAA/AAAA mercinaries might not be the best course of action.
nevertheless, who would be a good candidate?
I would think Rauschenburger would have to be at the top of the list considering his age and performance (over 5 innings) so far this year.
I do know that I do not want to see Mulligan yet.
Getting beyond Springfield in the dominoes is not a big deala s there are guys in EST (such as Bittle) who could esaily be activated and should be able to hold their own. Heck, they could even activate Martinez! (but wouldn’t count on it).
There may be some guys ready to come off the DL as well. Sam Freeman pitched well in the Spring but they still DL’d him to start the season so he could be activated at Springfield. Don’t know what others might be ready.
Just posted a link in the post entitled “Pitchers come in all sizes” (about 4 posts back). Normally I wouldn’t mention it here in another link but it is so relevant to what was a very good discussion I thought it was important enough to mention here for you guys to go check it out.
I want in on Jackson’s bandwagon. However, I still am halfway on the Kozma bandwagon (yes it does exist)
I would love for us to be able to have two bandwagons. I have stuck my toe on the Kozma bandwagon but it will be a while before I take the plunge.
this place has more than 2 bandwagons.
Can we go ahead and call him Ryan “Smooth Criminal” Jackson
Speaking of the Jackson bandwagon, Baseball Prospectus’ Kevin Goldstein just tweeted this:
“It’s only April 13th, but if there is one prospect who I like WAY more than I did on January 1, it might be #STLCards SS Ryan Jackson at AA.”

Anyone have any links to where I can get acclimated to some of the June draft prospects?
I think it’s gotta be a hitter this year
So, has there been any confirmation on the severity of Oscar Taveras’ hamstring injury? Weeks? Months? All year?
I have been wondering the same thing PH…. let’s just hope he’s out for a couple of weeks and not a couple of months. From the posts the other day, it sounded like it was something that he would fully recover from. He also has age on his side, I believe he is still 18 and I know that I sure recovered a lot faster back then than I do now. I’m only 29 but the bumps and bruises (and hangovers) don’t respond like they used to!
