The Memphis Redbirds relieves Eduardo Sanchez and Fernando Salas are on the way to meet the Cardinals in Arizona to replace Bryan Augenstein and (potentially) Brian Tallet in the Cardinals bullpen per Bernie Miklasz and John Vuch.

One would think that Salas would be the first to get the call and Sanchez will be activated if and only if Tallet goes on the DL.

Eduardo Sanchez’s first appearance will be his MLB debut.

Really excited to see Sanchez take on Major Leaguers. Plenty happy about Salas coming on board as well.

Word is Raushenberger to Memphis and Vicotr Marte acquired for future considerations from the Royals and also to Memphis. Delgado to the DL in Springfield.

If all those moves hold I’m going to predict Cleto and Greenwood to Springfield (Cleto may relieve or may bump one of the starters to relief. Anotehr option would be Sam Freeman to come off the DL.)

My guess for PB would be Moss up from QC ( an age thing – the guy is already 24). Beyond that there are lots of options to fill in at PB and QC either from the DL or EST. Got to believe they want to move up Lyons, Kiekhefer, Matos, and Bittle (if healthy)

It means the Cardinals have picked up a guy who’s not among the Royals’ top 30 or so prospects for a player to be named later. He’s not young, and he has flopped in two major-league appearances (career major-league WHIP of close to 2, ERA over 9). However, he has been reasonably effective at AAA Omaha (1.325 and 2.71). He’s the kind of guy who can help a minor-league bullpen, without any prospects of helping the major-league team unless unspeakable things happen, so we will not speak of them.

Note that “not among the Royals’ top 30 or so prospects” is not nearly as damning a description as “not good enough to play for the Royals.” Their minor-league system is LOADED, by all accounts. (It should be; they’ve been so lousy for so long that they’ve had plenty of high draft picks.)

Per Springfield Cardinals site. Rada and Greenwood to Springfield.

  5. Andrew says:

It means that the team did a dumb thing and decided to trade for a minor league reliever. Hopefully the future considerations is cash and not a player to be named later.

  6. Andrew says:

I still rather not lose anyone at all in this situation.

  7. Hugecardsfan says:

Andrew, have you heard anything at all about Oscar Taveras’ recuperation?

  8. Andrew says:

Not at all, I asked the guy I know who is close with the team but nothing yet. The organization probably will take it very slow and make sure he’s healed. No need to rush with your highest ceiling position player. I know some people may think that his start may just be a fluke but the QC coaches know better. At the same level and age he’s had a better start than Bryce Harper. With Taveras yes the stats are tantalizing but actually seeing him play you know the stats are for real and not just luck or small sample size.

  9. Andrew says:

It was a hamstring injury, strained or pulled im assuming.

  10. VolsnCards5 says:

Just an FYI…strained and pulled are the same thing

    Update…

Rosenthal dominated again today…7 innings, 4 hits, 1 er, 7ks (play-by-play has 7Ks)…Where is this kid going to end up? It looks like Low-A is WAY too easy for him. I think he finishes at AA by the end of the year.

  12. cariocacardinal says:

Wonder if Sanchez is just a stop gap until Walters is ready to pitch again after his start last night. Tony said in the Spring that Salas isn’t a long man and Sanchez hasn’t been used that way either.

    • jjray says:

In a rational world Batista would be the long man with Augenstein down … but we live in Tony’s world so who can say. I’d like to see Tony trust Salas with higher leverage situation that go around. He’ll surely tread lightly with Sanchez. We’ll see how it plays out.

  13. alex says:

What about Boggs for the short term? He’s been a starter for sometime until last year.

    • T Bird says:

Boggs is too valuable in his late inning role–long relief isn’t nearly as a 7th or 8th inning guy.

      • alex says:

True, but I’m talking temporary. It makes ZERO sense to bring up someone who’s just gonna get lit up for three innings when we need it. It makes a little sense to use Boggs as the emergency long relief-er until Augenstein’s off the DL. If the injury turns out to be serious, that option won’t work. If it’s for three weeks, I dont see why not.

  14. Andrew says:

Hopefully Batista transitions into the long man role. One of the reasons he made the team was for his versatility he can be an 8th inning guy or he can give you 3 innings. Transition him into Augesteins rule and have Salas and Sanchez work the 8th.

what an outstanding performance in his major league debut tonight by sanchez…5 out of 6 outs via k’s, couldn’t of asked for anything better

  16. Andrew says:

Congrats to Sanchez…..shows 3 very strong pitches. Shut the door……Don’t say a word! :)

  17. Andrew says:

BTW that was the Springfield Cardinals call when Sanchez closed out a game.

  18. Andrew says:

Thinking of it it may be.

    • Tackle Box says:

It is. I was kind of being sarcastic.

It’s from Every Morning by Sugar Ray. They say, “Shut the door, baby. Don’t say a word”. The announcer is obviously just taking out the “baby”.

  19. PJ says:

Closer by committee…we aren’t playing for fantasy owners. Make it happen TLR. We have the arms. Let’s use ‘em.
