Shelby Miller ALERT!

As I type this, Eduardo Sanchez just concluded his sparkling MLB debut by striking out 5 of the 7 batters he faced. While it occurred in a game whose outcome had been decided over an hour earlier, Sanchez still faced Big League hitters and made most (Kelly Johnson included) look foolish.

On to the DFR

Memphis 1, New Orleans 2

  • Sugar Shane Robinson went 2-for-5 with a 2B.
  • Mark Hamilton went 2-for-3 with 2 BBs.
  • Andrew Brown went 2-for-4 with a 2B and the team’s lone RBI.
  • Matt Carpenter and Donovan Solano each had hits.
  • Brandon Dickson threw a game that deserved a win, scattering 5 H and 2 BB over 6 IP. He struck out 9 but gave up a solo HR to former Redbird Ruben Gotay for 1 of his 2 ER.
  • Blake King struckout 4 in 2 IP, yielding a BB.
  • The now pillphered Memphis bullpen called on new acquisition Victor Marte, who had 2 K and 1 H in 1 IP.

Quad Cities 2, Kane County 1

  • Virigil Hill went 1-for-4 with a 2B and the 2 RBIs for the game.
  • John Rodriguez was 1-for-2 with a 2B and 2 BBs.
  • Michael Swinson, Kyle Conley, Patrick Elkins, Juan Castillo and Yunior Castillo all had a H.
  • Trevor Rosenthal twirled a gem. He went 7 innings with 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB and tallied 6 K.
  • Boone Whiting picked up the save with 2 IP of 3 K perfect ball.

Palm Beach 4, Charlotte 5 (10 innings)

  • Zach Cox went 2-for-4 with a BB and R.
  • Alan Ahmady went 1-for-4 with a 2B and R.
  • Edgar Lara went had a HR in his 5 ABs. He totaled 3 RBI.
  • Audry Perez went 2-for-4.
  • Shelby Miller threw a strong game with 11 Ks. He went 5.2 IP, giving up 6 H and 4 R (2 ER). The solid sign is the 1 BB. He left the game in the 6th after recording his 11th K with runners at 1st and 2nd. Jesse Simpson came in and pushed those 2 ER across with the very next batter.
  • Jesse Simpson gave up that 1 H but walked 2 and struckout 1 in 1 IP.
  • Chase Reid threw 1.1 ip with 3 K.
  • Jorge Rondon took the extra innings loss giving up 1 ER on 1 H, 2 BB and 2 K in 2 IP.

    11 Ks… *faints*

I know Rosenthal has a good fastball. But what kind of secondary offferings does he have?

  3. David says:

Question – where did Rosenthal come from? Did we get him in the draft? What year, round? Was he out of high school? Is his ceiling close to what Miller’s is? I follow the blog pretty closely during the season but this year had no clue where this guy came from.

I am pretty stoked to have Miller, Martinez, and Rosenthal all working their way up. Put those guys with Garcia, Wainwright, Lynn and we have an awesome staff.

Rosenthal was a 21st rounder in 2009..he converted from SS out of a Juco in Cowley County…he is from Kansas City….He is only 20 years old.

His fastball is 94-97….he has a nice changeup and slider….

From everyone I have talked to, he has pitched better than Miller this spring. Miller gets all the pub, because of the high round status and money…but people in the know say that the top 3 pitchers this spring training were

    1. Rosenthal (Teamates call him Rosie)
    2. Martinez
    3. Miller

Take away draft status and bonus…and those are your top 3 pitchers in the organization.

That 2009 draft might turn out to be one of the best ever for the Cards. Long way to go before we know that, certainly, but it has more potential sleepers than any recent draft I can think of.

Besides Rosenthal in the 21st round, you have Ryan Jackson in the 5th (showing a better bat than anyone anticipated), Matt Carpenter in the 13th, Jon Rodriguez in the 17th (drafted as a first baseman; don’t know yet if he can stick at third), and Matt Adams in the 23rd.

I didn’t have Rodriguez on my radar until this spring, so until I looked it up just now I didn’t know he was one of the rare hitters who actually slugged higher in the NY-Penn League (.500) than at Johnson City (.412). If his bat’s really this good, I have to wonder how he lasted until the 17th round. They drafted him out of Manatee CC in Florida, which I would assume is heavily scouted (based on the fact I’ve heard of it and I don’t live in Florida).

Rodriguez had never played 1B prior to coming to the Cardinals organization. He was mostly a 3B man. He had a torn lambrum in his throwing shoulder his last year in JC so the Cards moved him to 1B. I don’t know whether he DH’d his last year in JC or played 3rd with a bum shoulder but that might have been why he dropped a little in the draft.

        • Lou Schuler says:

          Didn’t know that!

He didn’t play any 3B in 2009 — listed at 1B for both JC and GCL Cards.

The shoulder injury could explain why he had more power in 2010 in the NYP than he did the year before in the Appy.

If his bat continues to develop and he turns out to have MLB potential, I hope he has the legs and arm to play outfield. There’s a long line ahead of him at 3B (as noted below re: Cox).

      • cariocacardinal says:

Dont forget Anthony Garcia (19th round) from this class. Great plate discipline, good power, and if he can stick at catcher…. Virgil Hill is still intriguing also.

      • PJ says:

Schneider has been pretty good out of the class as well. And what’s his face…that one first round pick that year…his name escapes me

    • RCHIII says:

The shortstop thing was always kind of a lark. He really is a 3rd baseman. As with most younger players, he played a position and pitched. At Cowley he had to decide whether to pitch or play a position. He likes to hit, so committing to pitching wasn’t as easy as it sounds – at the same time everyone was pretty much telling him his potential was on the mound. My only point is saying he is a converted SS, really isn’t correct, he has always pitched. Don’t be surprised to see this kid hit when he is allowed to. He didn’t get a lot of attention in HS because he never played HS varsity. His HS had a rule against chewing tobacco. Instead of running him till he couldn’t stand, they tossed him because they had a zero tolerance policy. He wasn’t even chewing, they just found a tin in his bag. That was a bum rap that I think ballooned into perceived character risk that was BS.

He is going to be a good one.

What is the future for Brandon Dickson? Could he be a long/swing bullpen guy. All he has done was get better every year. Not overpowering, but still gets people out.

  6. Clark says:

It’d be nice to see Cox get some extra base hits.

    • Cards Fan in Chitown #2 says:

      Agree with you zuke.

Does anyone know if they are even consideriing moving him to 3B? With Freese doing decent and staying healthy (fingers crossed) and MCarp ahead of him, shouldn’t we at least give him a shot there? Or is the thinking that he would be awful there so why try? If skippy can play there I’m guessing Cox could…..

      • Cards Fan in Chitown #2 says:

sorry I posted twice, tried to hit stop to correct the 3B with 2B but I guess I didn’t get it in time

      • Andrew says:

Maybe get him bat ready before moving him to 2b. I still think the team is iffy on Freese’s long term ability to stay healthy. If Freese stays strong we always have another Top Prospect to trade a team.

        • Cards Fan in Chitown #2 says:

I just feel like it’s jammed up with MCarp too. Cox is the only one of the three that has a shot to work out at 2B IMO and I feel his “high avg and obp” would fit much better there.

And how about Sanchez last night?!? 5 out of 6 outs were K’s….. 2012 Closer perhaps?…… Or hell, he can’t blow anymore saves than Franklin has this year! 2011 closer it is!

  7. Andrew says:

Just think of how good that draft would have been had we decided to pony up a little money for Wil Myers as the catcher we took at 67 instead of Robert Stock. Myers has moved off catcher but he’s a top 10 prospect in baseball already and we probably would have allowed him the time to develop at catcher with Yadi still with us.

  8. Andrew says:

    He’s still hurt I believe.

  9. Purple_Haze says:

I’m sort of unsure about Boone Whiting closing games. He gets the K’s but he doesn’t have the kind of fastball you want a closer to have.

  10. VolsnCards5 says:

OMG Trevor Rosenthal is such a friggin DREAMBOAT……..IF you aren’t aboard the rosen-train by now….well you just suck

  11. drugrunner says:

cards fans need to start planning now to replace YADI… it takes a few years to travel the minors and finally get a sniff at catcher on this club. so long as defense first rules the roost, a nice arm, and glove, and you too can be a backup cardinal catcher.

yadi’s knees are not getting any younger.
