The real sleeper to watch out for is Angel De Jesus. Last season, while watching Johnson city De Jesus caught my eye as a tall easy delivery pitcher with mid nineties velocity and a heavy sinking fast ball. His secondary deliveries aren’t nearly on par with his fastball yet, but he does throw a slider and a curve .
With Rosenthal getting all the love around here lately, (and he should, I saw him hit 98 on a scouts gun last season, with a well developed two seam as well) it’s easy to overlook his team mate. But I’m jumping on the de jesus bandwagon before anyone else gets a chance.
A Pappy Dunc wet dream. Throws hard with heavy sink and has a two seamer. Save me a seat on the wagon Dave.
I think it’s John Gast…unless he goes by Kevin and I’ve never known it. Being a Canes fan, I wanted Miami to recruit him all the way back to high school.
On Swagerty: I will hold back my excitement since he dominated at such a low level. With his advanced tools, he should be dominating those hitters. I hope they push him quickly this year. It would be nice to see him at least get a cup of Springfield coffee before season’s end.
Agreed. The question is whether he advances as a starter or reliever. He’s projected to be a reliever, but if he develops a reliable third pitch to go with his two plus offerings, he might stick as a starter.
He doesn’t already have three pitches? Changeup seems like it’s a pretty good pitch.
From what I saw in his start he does have 3 good pitches already, I think he can stick at starter
I think the reliever projection comes more from his size. Many people think smaller framed pitchers wear down too easily.
From what I’ve read, some are also worried about his mechanics. He has an unusual throwing motion that may not wear very well.
here’s s decent write-up on Swagerty from milb.com:

Even more encouraging to see that 2 of the 4 hits against Swagerty were bunts. Those very likely would have been outs at a higher level.
How about Ryan Jackson OPSing over 1.000 in his first 7 games at AA
Trying hard not to get excited. It’s early. I pray it continues!
Zack Cox is slugging .290 in his first 8 games with only one extra base hit. I know the sample size is tiny and it’s early and all that, but is anyone else nervous we paid over 2 million for a Mark Loretta?
Power seems to be down throughout our whole system. I don’t know if it is a fluke or some style of hitting they are teaching or emphasizing (cutting down on strikeouts maybe). Not worried ………yet.
If you remember, Cox also had a very slow start in the AFL and then finished very strongly. Perhaps he just starts slow. Much too early to worry in my view.
I watched the Springfield game on local TV last night instead of going to the Ballpark due to the rain/storms forcast and was glad I did. A lot of rain and the game was played but the highlight for me was Steve Carlton spent a long inning in the booth with the local announcers (Scott Bailes was a teammate at Cleveland) and he seemed to be a good guy and not the jerk as he is often portrayed.
Has anyone seen Rainel Rosario in person?
All I know about him is that he had one huge month for QC last season.
Before that, good-not-great numbers in short-season ball in ’09 and ’08, preceded by an unsuccessful stint in the GCL in ’07 (age 18). My BA almanacs don’t have DSL or VSL stats before ’07, so I don’t know what he did before he got to the U.S.
I had thought he was a corner outfielder and more of a power prospect, based on his high K rates (just under 1 strikeout a game in most leagues). But he’s leading off and playing CF for PB.
Any insights?
I have seen him in person….he was described as a toolshed, he still needs alot of polish obviously, he’s more of a power guy. Probably leading off because Palm Beach doesn’t really have a lead off guy. I’m suprised he is at Palm Beach as I thought theywould want to build on his month in QC last year but the QC outfield is so talented they decided to challenge Rosario. His power is real though, saw him hit a homerun just to the left of the big black CF backdrop that was overhalf way up it.
Starting to think Greenwood might at least have some middle relief or LOOGY potential. Looking forward to some first hand reports.
The pitcher that Spring field faced last night is the #1 prospect in the Rangers system and top 30 overall. Of course, the Cards only had 4 hits and didnt score off of him in 5 innings.
The Frisco pitcher was very good last night. Springfield hitters couldn’t due much. He hit 95-96 all night long with a few 98 thrown in. He was locating the ball well also. I believe he had 9 k’s in his 5 innings. As soon as he left the game Springfield started hitting better. Also he is a lefty.
Addition for Springfield was at 81-86 all night. He hit 89 once but just about threw the ball to the backstop.
Some like Additon as a prospect but not many pitchers (even lefties) make it in the bigs at 81-86 mph. Not even in relief. It’s amazing he has gotten as far as he has with that velocity.
I don’t know if it’s just me, but there is absolutely nothing that intrigues me with checking up on Memphis, especially since Salas and Sanchez have been called up and even then with those two it was always a matter of “when” and not “if”.
Right now, i just glance at the Memphis report and start digging in with Springfield.
What am i missing? Watching Kozma every day doesn’t really get me going. I suppose once (hopefully) Carpenter ever gets himself righted, he’ll be fun. But really after him, i have little interest in that roster.
Help me out here. I’m looking for inspiration. Everyday it sees as if Shane Robinson is the offensive star and I’m not really interested in that at all.
I certainly check for Lynn (who pitches tonight). I check for PJ mostly because I like what I know of the guy. Andy Brown intrigues me.
When I look at Memphis I look at Cruz if he’s started, Hamilton, Reifer, Chambers, Kozma and Carpenter, Ottavino also but can’t really get a good read unless im actually watching on milb.tv
Want to see how Cruz hits AAA and how he catched when I can watch the game(for some reason there milb.tc connection isn’t up and running yet) Hamilton just to make sure hes in the line up and healthy. Reifer to see how he’s doing. Chambers because I want to see him successed at AAA. Kozma because its promising if he performs better in AAA than he did in AA. And Carpenter to be reassured that his outstanding Spring a fluke like many thought Solano’s was last year.
John Gast did very well in Spring Training against MLB and AAA hitters. Hopefully he’ll get a quick promotion because his talent level warrants that he should at least be at Quad Cities, if not Springfield.
Did I miss something? Isn’t he pitching at Palm Beach. That’s higher than Quad Cities.
I really have high hopes for Jackson at AA..we sure do need a ss, who can both field and hit…at this point, he looks like the guy…sp
