The farm went a collective 0-3, while Quad Cities was rained out once again this season. Shelby Miller pitched his 3rd game of the season, as Springfield could have used him in a loss that tallied 14 runs for Midland. Details below!

Omaha 2, Memphis 0

  • Pete Kozma and Matt Carpenter both went 0-4
  • Freddie Bynum hit 2-4 w/ a double (the only extra base hit by the Redbirds)
  • Adron Chambers hit at the bottom of the order again and went 1-2 w/ a BB and SB. His line early in the season is .343/.439/.371
  • Brandon Dickson went 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R (0 earned), 3 BB, and 4 K against a stacked Omaha lineup
  • Blake King stuck out the side in the 9th with 1 BB

Midland 14, Springfield 7

  • Alex Castellanos belted 2 HR with 4 RBI. He finished 3-5 on the day
  • Matt Adams went 3-5, all singles
  • Tommy Pham, Niko Vasquez, and Ryan Jackson each hit 1-4 with a walk. I don’t want to overreact, but I’m starting to get concerned that Jackson hasn’t had an extra base hit in the past day.
  • Pham added a SB
  • Charles Cutler started at catcher and went 2-5
  • Chris Swauger hit 2-4 w/ a double and RBI
  • Kevin Thomas, Ryan Kulik, and Matt Frevert combined to give up 14 runs. Sloppy defense led to 6 of those runs being unearned from 4 errors.
  • Nick Greenwood pitched 2 perfect innings and struck out 1

Charlotte 5, Palm Beach 4 in 12 innings

  • Shelby Miller went 7 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 1 BB, and 8 K. His K:BB ratio this early in the season is nearly 10:1. He continues to display impeccable control and his competition in the Florida State League already looks overmatched.
  • Zack Cox went 4-6. *All singles (*cue the uproar)
  • Cox was also caught stealing
  • Ronald Ramirez, Audry Perez, and Alan Ahmady contributed 2 singles each
  • Jorge Rondon blew the save in the 12th. The winning run scored after Audry Perez threw wildly past Bolivar at 2nd base trying to throw out the runner on a wild pitch by Rondon.

Not sure if this has been mentioned around here yet, but i remember around January of 2009, the year Ryan was drafted, he was ranked by BA around the 30s, projecting him to be a late first round or supplemental round pick. He of course, did not hit as well that year to be picked that high and fell to the 5th round. I guess the point im trying to make is that the potential we are all hoping for, could certainly be there.

Pierce, you need to have more subtle jabs in your writing if you wnat people to go crazy like yesterday’s post.

Miller was not his usual dominant self. 4-5 XBH allowed, and a 6:3 AO:GO ratio. I wonder if he was leaving the ball up. Still 8 k’s to 1 bb and more strikeouts than innings pitched is always nice.

According to baseball reference, Shelby has produced a whip of 1.075 and so/bb ratio of 9.33 in 3 starts. One would think he earns a promotion to AA by mid season if he keeps up this pace. I assume baseball reference has been updated to included the game reported in this DFR (but maybe not).

    • Pierce says:

I forgot to mention the fact that Miller gave up 4 extra base hits (including 1 HR), but his GO/AO ratio was .95 last year at QC.

Hopefully that game was a fluke and Shelby maintains his ground ball tendency as he advances up the system. Gotta love the so/bb ratio though.

Might Possibly be. Not sure where the game was at, but the midwest has has some strong, swirling winds latelty.

I am starting to enjoy the cynical note I pick up in Pierces DFRs.
