Left for dead prospect Daryl Jones is OPSing .958 on the young season. Keep it up DJ.

SSS alert here, but am I the only one that thinks that Pete Kozma and Ryan Jackson should be flip-flopped with Jackson called up to Memphis and Kozma sent back to Springfield?

    • Howildcard says:

Too soon for a switch, but if Jackson keeps hitting I definitely agree.

    • arknepp says:

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. It is only 14 games into the season. Not to be the bearer of bad news, but I think I read that Jackson’s BABIP is something ridiculously high like .480. Also, as of right now he is walking less than 10% of the time. I say let Jackson continue this exceptional play at AA for awhile more, and make a move about midway through the season if we still think Jackson is clearly more advanced to the point where it would only make sense to pull the switch.

      • Tackle Box says:

        accoding to fangraphs its .468.

anyway, how “ridiculously” high is .468 when someone is hitting .406? it’s an honest question. and I’m not saying he’s a .400 hitter. .400 in itself is un-sustainable. but i’m not sure i’d throw out his babip to try to make that point.

        • ato9p5 says:

You’re looking at it backwards. The .468 BABIP is why his avg is at .407. BABIP is a good stat to make his point as it can show how luck and defense affect a players avg (also a players adjustments can increase or decrease it if they are hitting the ball harder or more LDs, but not by .130). As that high BABIP, which .468 is high as Jackson was around .330 in ’10 and around .300 is generally considered normal, regresses to normalcy the avg will drop along with it.

          • Hugecardsfan says:

Frankly, it’s a chicken or the egg thing. BABIP has to be higher than BA unless the hitter puts every ball in play. Certainly a .468 BABIP is unsustainable just as we know that a .407 BA is.

Clearly the LD rate should tell us more than BABIP. If seeing eye grounders are responsible for this high BA then his hitting is suspect and could turn on a dime. If line drives are coming off his bat at a very high rate, well then, Jackson is seeing and hitting the ball very well. While he may regress to a mean, it’ll still represent solid hitting.

  3. Vision says:

Swagerty gave up a two out, three run HR in the 6th to taint his line.

Cleto keeps humming along. Goldstein is very high on him, so I continue to keep an eye on him. Liking what I’m seeing out of him.

  4. Kelley says:

Who is Joe Gannon? Memphis left 14 0n in scoring position last night… and it is a shame that Lynn didn’t get a win for his performance.

  5. Cards Fan in Chitown #2 says:

Has anyone heard anything about Taveras? 3 weeks or so still?

  6. Cardinals645 says:

Nice to see Cleto pitching pretty damn well; takes a bit of the sting out of the Brendan Ryan trade.

  7. Andrew says:

Who is Carlos Guitierez? Fangraphs said he played Rookie ball or was a Rookie for the A’s in 2006 but thats all. Him at Joe Gannon. Is our system becoming a MASH unit?

  8. cariocacardinal says:

That was Danial Calhoun’s first pro loss after starting his career 12-0.

  9. cariocacardinal says:

I think Cleto is the pitcher that most needs to move up in the organization. The guy is not old but this is his second year at high A and he is on the 40 man roster and on an option. You can’t have guys like that in A ball. If they are taking a 40 man roster spot they need to move up where they can soon be available to help your big club.

  10. Andrew says:

Think he is in High A because they want him to transition to starter for good. That and I’m assuming he gets more personalized work with the EST coaching staff also. I agree though he should be at Springfield sooner than the other Palm Beach pitchers though.

    • T Bird says:

I agree, I think the pitching coach is the key…at Palm Beach isn’t he working with Dennis Martinez? If yes, who better to work with in the minor league system?

      • pitch and hit says:

I didn’t see this before I posted, I agree. It’s not just with mechanics, he works a lot with the head stuff that is important for young pitchers to understand.

    • cariocacardinal says:

Transition? He’s started nearly every game he’s pitched for the last 3.5 years.

I’m sure Bryan Eversgerd (Springfield pitching coach) appreciates your confidence in his abilities. NOT!

      • Andrew says:

It has nothing to do with that but isn’t there a bigger coaching staff in Palm Beach with the EST coaches being there also?

  11. Franklin says:

It’s nice to see Lynn with a solid start to the season. Facing the likes of Hosmer and Moustakas last night and only giving up four hits over seven and a third is no small feat.

  12. Howildcard says:

I thought that Cleto was essentially a throw in by the Mariners and was not supposed to be a real prospect. Was what I heard wrong?

    • arknepp says:

Yes, I believe he rated as something like a C+ prospect that profiled more as a power-armed reliever, but a prospect nevertheless. I think its exciting to see our organization transitioning all these perceived future relievers into starters in the low minors (Cleto, Swagerty, Kelly). It seems like it is a win-win for the development of the pitcher and the organization. If the pitcher develops into a viable starter, then added value for the organization. If not, hopefully all the work on secondary pitches as a starter will give the pitcher at least one more pitch to pair with the fastball. Hopefully this prevents a bunch of Mottes on our relief corp in the future

  13. JC says:

My man Hooker has got off to a HORRIBLE start to the season. I had him predicted as a close 2nd in the Cards Minors Pitcher of the year for 2011! Not looking like a very good pick yet!

  14. PJ says:

I have not yet jumped the DJ Tools bandwagon….prove me right DJ!

  15. pitch and hit says:

Hooker needs to go back to PB to work with Martinez.
