Confirming what was already suspected, John Vuch indicated to me that Adam Reifer’s knee injury will require surgery. He’s likely out for the rest of the regular season though there is a chance that he could participate in the Arizona Fall League.
Adam Reifer had been moved into the closer’s role following the promotion of Fernando Salas and Eduardo Sanchez to the major league team. Shortly thereafter, Reifer injured his knee coming off the mound to field a ball. He’ll conclude the year with a somewhat odd stat line. In 6.1 innings, he allowed 7 hits, 1 walk for 1 ER but struck out just 1. He did show strong groundball rates during his brief 2011 effort.
Reifer had shown improvements as he moved up the minor league organization posting a better than 3:1 K:BB rate for the first time in 2010. Reifer will be 25 in June.

Any chance Reifer is taken off of the 40 man roster heading into next year?
I’d say there is a reasonable chance.
Too bad. When ever you see an non-pitching related injury such as this, does anybody else ever that that little thought in the bakc of their mind…Might as well hag TJ surgery while I am out?
funny, I was thinking the same thing.
If he might be ready for the Arizona Fall League, having an additional Tommy John surgery would put him out for about a year from now, i.e. April/May 2012 versus October, 2011 for the Arizona Fall League.
If he can return healthy this fall, he should be able to help the bullpen sometime during the 2012 season.
Who is Adam represented by?
