Great to see Swagerty make a strong Palm Beach debut.

Anyone heard what’s been happening with our 3rd round pick Sam Tuivaivala this year? He played a bit of rookie ball in 2010 but I haven’t really heard what’s happening with him. Is he going to be on one of the short-season teams this year again?

  3. Vision says:

Swagerty with zero walks is a great stat as well.

Tuivalala will be on a short season team, and is back in extended ST at the moment. He’ll be a very slow mover most likely, as he focuses full-time on hitting.

Great to see Swagerty do well yesterday

Matt Carpenter is currently rocking a .454 OBP. That is all.

    • Gruntosaurus says:

Down to .448 after yesterday’s game, according to MiLB. He’s obviously in a slump.

A juicy thing about this is that he’s doing it without obvious, ridiculous good luck. If I do my math correctly, he’s 29 for 86 on balls in play, working out to a .337 BABIP. That’s high, but by no means unsustainably high. Average for the PCL seems to be about .330.

His luck may not be ridiculously good, but his eye is. He’s walking in almost exactly 20% of his plate appearances. If that skill carries over to the majors (and it should translate, see the Matt Adams thread) … well, that’s a major-league hitter.

I know the big league club seems content with Descalso for the time being but he strikes me as better fit in a defensive utility role — DD’s defense has been far better than I’d expected. I’m rapidly reaching the point that I’d like to see MCarpenter in the big leagues. He strikes me as an ideal 2-slot hitter or even a leadoff guy.

        • buchek's bat says:

In total agreement with this. I’ve always liked Descalso as a utility-type, acknowledging his limitations, of course, because he just seems to play smart baseball. And M Carpenter has been consistently superior at all his stops along the system. He needs to be given a chance to do this on a bigger stage, and probably pretty soon. Maybe M Carpenter can finally release us from the Scott Rolen third-base-voo-doo-curse. What the heck’s to be done with Freese??? I like the guy’s hitting and fielding. Always have. But every time I see him actually walking upright I’m reminded of that M Night Shyamalan movie, “Unbreakable.”

          • Felonius_Monk says:

I guess in an ideal world, if we can get rid of Schumaker (whose lack of flexibility really makes him a bit of a waste of a roster spot), and have Descalso 2B, “whoever” (my preference is JJ Hardy) at SS, and Greene (or someone like Punto) as backup, it gives us the option of carrying BOTH Carpenter and Freese on the roster and still having two backup OF types (Craig and Jay, I guess). That gives us enough flexibility (esp. if one of Carp/Freese take a few groundballs at 2B now and again) and a really strong offensive presence off the bench, AND lets us play the matchups better at 3B (i.e. Carp starts most games vs RHP, Freese starts all games vs LHP).

According to a Brian Walton tweet last night, Audry Perez was called up to Double A Springfield.

  7. Ryan says:

Robert Stock made his season debut last night, going 0-for-4. Guess we can put those rumors of him moving to the mound to bed (at least for now, anyway).

    • easy says:

That’s too bad. I don’t see him making it as a hitter and it looks like we got some better catching prospects.

    • BigJawnMize says:

I wouldnt put it to rest…I have a couple baseball contacts in the Marlins org that saw him on the bump in EST. As for contacts these guys are pretty reliable but as for how serious the move was being considered they obviously didnt have insight.

      • Felonius_Monk says:

I guess they maybe give him half a year then make the switch. It does seem a bit odd though – presumably it’ll take him a while to be able to move onto the mound, and they’re risking another wasted year. I suppose he doesn’t profile as a high-end pitching prospect anyhow so it’s probably no biggy, but the quicker they move him the more chance he has of avoiding the Motte curse (moving too late to develop a useful 2nd pitch).

  8. PJ says:

Maybe I am missing something, but how could Swagerty have been in line for a victory after giving up 2 ER when his team only put up 2 runs the whole game?

  9. JC says:

The line that I like to see from this DFR is Longmire with 3 BB. I love his upside but he has to K less and walk a bit more. Maybe he is working on this.
