Was at the QC game last night. Enjoyed it thoroughly. Siegrist didn’t have his best stuff but was spreading out 9 hits over 6 innings effectively. A couple errors made his life a little more difficult but he managed to pitch around them. One error was when the CF let a ball slip past him and the LF chased it down and nailed a runner trying to score from first. Very nice bang bang play. DeJesus pitched effectively 2 innings giving up a hit each inning but otherwise shutting them down. Corpas started the ninth and proceded to get in trouble. he was wild, walking in a run and leaving the bases loaded. One of the singles was an infield single which would likely have been fielded cleanly by the 2d baseman had Corpas not knocked it away.

Can’t say enough about Wright’s save. The bases jammed, 3-2 and the Cubbies 3rd hitter at the plate. Lefty lefty matchup. Wright has a very nice fastball and a sweeping curve both which he threw for strikes. Cubbie hitter battled barely getting a piece of 3 or 4 pitches before grounding meekly to 3rd and first out. Wright had both hitters battling defensively. He had good stuff and was just throwing strikes. Great save for which I am thankful since it was pretty chilly and wife and I were ready to go home…with a win.

Edmonson’s HR was a ballistic missile (straight away RF) that cleared the netting above the fence (over 30 feet high) by another ten feet. A real no doubter.

Peoria threw a bullpen game. Their first pitcher shut us down on one single for four innings although we’d hit several rockets deep to left and center.

I asked about this morning’s starter (11 AM with 5000 screaming kids) and it appears it will be Russell.

I asked how Rosenthal was doing and they said he’ll be back in the rotation this week.

Re: Taveras He’s rehabbing on DL with no projection.

Whiting was in the pen answering questions pleasantly. Real nice looking kid.

any chance Taveras will play next week at Busch (5/26)?

      • Hugecardsfan says:

I wouldn’t count on it. I talked to Whiting in the bullpen. Though he didn’t have any particular insight, he said the guy is DL and wasn’t due back any time soon. I think they’ll error on the side of conservative with regard to his return.

Should be noted that Springfield committed 5 errors in its game!

    • Gruntosaurus says:

Also noted: two of those were on Niko, two on Audry Perez, one on Ahmady. Niko’s error numbers for the season as a whole are not excessive and this game can be viewed as an aberration. The other two, however … well, there are concerns.

    • whopperman says:

No doubt on any of the five – two SB E2′s, a routine fly ball dropped, a throw pulled Adams off the bag (demonstrating the footwork problems Azru referred to — it shouldn’t have), and a low throw got by the cutoff man.

I’ll write more this afternoon, but Cleto was reasonably impressive. Hit 96 on the stadium gun after he’d already thrown 100 pitches. He had some command issues once he started working his secondary stuff in, but he got some swings and misses out of it too.

And, um, Mike Trout is *FAST*.

Can somebody help me out – trying to decide whether to go to the Quad Cities Friday or Saturday. By looking back in the DFRs, the rotation has gone Martinez, Ferrara, Blair, Segrist, and now Martinez is supposed to start again today. Does anybody know who will be starting for the River Bandits on Friday and/or Saturday? It’s a two-hour drive and I will have my 3 sons with me, so I’d like to maximize the trip by seeing a good pitching matchup (if possible).

  4. Kingpin says:

    Thanks azru!

Russell pitched today. He gave up 3 runs on 6 hits and 3 BB’s today. I see nothing in Zach that suggests he’s got a future with the Cards…other than as organizational filler. His stuff doesn’t appear particularly daunting and his control is underwhelming. Copeland, on the other hand, looked impressive today.

Edmondson seems to have a compact swing and looks like a ballplayer.

Stock caught today. He needs to try pitching.

Not sure when Taveras will return.

palm beach score should be 5-1.

    nit: picked.
