The farm system book ends the night with wins including another impressive Shelby Miller performance albeit one that resulted in a loss for the young pitcher.

Memphis 4, Tacoma 3

  • Adron Chambers was 1-for-3 with a pair of walks. His one hit was a go ahead HR in the 9th inning after the teams had been tied since the 4th.
  • Aaron Luna went 2-for-5. Luna continues to hit well with an impressive walk rate. His current line for Memphis after 47 PAs is .298/.414/.468 and puts him well better than league average on offense. The walk rate continues to be very good.
  • Mark Hamilton was 2-f0r-4.
  • PJ Walters tossed 6 innings striking out 5 and allowing 3 runs on 2 walks and 3 hits. Walters has almost matched his 2010 minor league walks in half the innings.
  • Raul Valdes‘ move back to the bullpen is paying real dividends. Including his scoreless inning in this game, he’s tossed 3 innings out of the pen allowing 1 walk and two hits while striking out 5. If the Cardinals should need a LOOGy at the major league level, Valdes is likely their best option.

Springfield 2, Tulsa 11

  • Jose Garcia was 2-for-3 with a walk.
  • Ryan Jackson was 1-for-3.
  • Alex Castellanos went 2-for-4 with a double. Castellanos now has an OPS over 1.000 for the season after 125 ABs.
  • Niko Vasques knocked a homerun in a pinch hit appearance.
  • Michael Blazek was hammered for 6 runs on 10 hits. He struck out 4 in his 4 innings of work.
  • Richard Castillo fared even worse allowing 5 runs (3 earned) in 2 innings.

Palm Beach 0, Daytona 3

  • D’Marcus Ingram went 0-for-1 with 3 walks. Ingram has shown an improved batting eye with 12 walks against 12 strikeouts on the season.
  • Palm Beach collected just 4 hits during the game.
  • Shelby Miller was dominant as usual. Despite the lack of run support, Miller still overpowered the Daytona Cubs striking out 10 in 6 IP. He allowed 6 hits and 2 walks for 2 earned runs.
  • Tyler Lyons struck out 2 in 1.2 IP allowing just an unearned run on 2 hits.

Quad Cities 8, Cedar Rapids 3

  • Michael Swinson was 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of walks.
  • Nick Longmire was 0-for-2 with a pair of walks.
  • Jonathan Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk.
  • Greg Garcia was 2-for-3 with a walk.
  • Ronnie Gil and Victor Sanchez both went 2-for-3. Sanchez had a pair of doubles.
  • Seth Blair put together his best outing of the season striking out 6 in 6 IP. He allowed 3 hits and walked 3 for 3 ER.
  • Justin Wright struck out 3 in 2 innings of work. He allowed 1 hit and 1 walk.

Valdes doesn’t have a good left split, never has.

Luna’s bat will play at the major league level due to his OBP. He also has some pop. He just needs to make better solid contact (which he is this year). Probably will never have a high batting average but a .750 -.800 major league OPS is within his range of possibilities.

Hamilton is really raking in AAA. I didn’t think he got a fair shot in STL (of course who would with Pujols in front of you).

Castellanos has the same problem (and maybe worse) that a couple of our other prospects have – can’t take a walk. His walk rate is worse than Adams or Cox.

I’ve said for a long time Ingram’s ticket to the big leagues is taking walks. He has had years when he has put up huge OBP+ numbers. The problem is he fancies himself a power hitter.

Hope Wright gets bumped up soon. I’d like to see what he could do at a higher level.

Big Ronnie Gil fan. I think he will hit and move fast. People forget he was signed for his glove. That shouldn’t have gone away just because he got older quickly. I expect him to be in SPringfield next year.

Valdes 2010 in MLB: 27 strikeouts against 2 walks when facing lefties. Not sure what splits you’re looking at.

      • cariocacardinal says:

I stand corrected. not sure what I looked at (obviously in error).

        • Gruntosaurus says:

Maybe it’s the fact that left-handed hitters in the bigs lit him up like a Christmas tree last year, K/BB rate or no K/BB rate: .330/.366/.625. Why work him for a walk when you can homer off him in 5% of your plate appearances, and reach base in almost 40%? But it was a small sample size (94 PA). Probably. Hopefully.

I’m more bothered by the fact that when I saw him in Albuquerque (btw, still looking for tips on how to post the pictures from that game here), he had nothing, zip, Nichts, nada, nichevo. He is not young, and he’s not going to get more oomph on a fast ball that needs oomph if he’s going to throw it to major-league hitters, or that slash line will continue when he gets there.

If you have pictures, you can e-mail them to me and I’ll happily post them. Include your screenname (here and/or VEB) and I’ll credit them to you in the post.

Alternately, start a flickr account (they’re free) and you can link to them from there.

hope valdes stabilizes his performances out of the pen
miller doesn’t seem to be cutting it for a while now
and tlr will want something done, even if tallet is effective

  3. Pierce says:

The one at-bat I was able to see last night was Niko’s pinch-hit HR. It was an opposite field shot that just cleared the wall.

  4. Purple_Haze says:

D’Marcus Ingram is an interesting guy. Dunno if you can rightly say his batting eye is improved because walks have always been his calling card. He’s fast and he takes walks. That has the makings of an OBP machine.

  5. Mark G. says:

Sorry if this was already asked in another thread, but I was just curious if anyone who posts on here is planning on going to Busch on Thursday night to watch Quad Cities (and hopefully Carlos Martinez) play.

Living in St. Louis, I’ve never seen one of our minor league teams play, and it’s $10 for general admission seating. You could probably get a good seat and a good view of Martinez throwing smoke.

Keep up the good work, Future Redbirds!

  6. Andrew says:

    I’m going.

  7. RichardRich says:

I hope that HR gets Adron Chambers going a bit and nice to see Ryan Jackson have a positive day.

  8. RichardRich says:

If your not following Springfield right now Adams has a shot at a 3 HR or more day, he has 2 with big winds blowing out so he has a real shot at the hat trick.

  9. cariocacardinal says:

Laird out with a broken finger. Will really be interesting to see if Cruz or Anderson gets the call! Either way it will also be interesting to see if they go outside the organization if Laird is out any length of time.

    • HogwildCard says:

I’m kind of hoping for Cruz he looks to be a bit better than Anderson both offensively and defensively.

    • pitch and hit says:

Wow, is this team snake bitten or what? I really like Laird too. Ouch!

      • Tackle Box says:

He definitely endeared himself to me when Lohse did his impression of LaRussa. Laird literally looked like it was the funniest damn thing he’d EVAR seen.

  10. cariocacardinal says:

Probably wont be here to post this on tomorrow’s DFR so I’ll go ahead and mention it here.

Hamilton now has 15 BB vs. 7 K’s in AAA this year.

  11. cardsfan17 says:

    Cruz up to St Louis.
