The farm goes 3-1, as Springfield battles against Aaron Cook of the Rockies. Read further to see who came out the victor…
- James Rapoport led off and went 2-4 with a walk. He scored all 3 times on base
- Andrew Brown continues his hot start going 2-4 with 3 RBI’s and a 2-run HR
- Mark Hamilton has hit well after being sent down and finished 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI’s
- Daryl Jones DH’d and was 1-4 with the hat trick in K’s
- Bryan Anderson also went 1-4 and gets passed up for another promotion again as Tony Cruz gets the call. You’ve gotta wonder at this point whether or not you should just consider Anderson an org guy. The only chance it seems he’ll get to stick as a back-up in the majors will be with another team.
- Nick Additon continues to pitch well in the PCL. His line was 6.2 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 BB, and 3 K
- Chuckie Fick and Victor Marte combine to pitch 2 and a third perfect innings, striking out 5
- Big day for the top 3 in the order, as Jose Garcia, Jermaine Curtis, and Matt Adams go 3-5. Curtis added 2 triples and Garcia had a double.
- No extra-base hits for Adams, but I’ve heard far more pub regarding him than any other prospect for Springfield right now. Several guys in the industry I’ve talked to love his power and think he has a future in the majors.
- On the other hand, I’ve asked several scouts about Ryan Jackson, but he hasn’t really appeared on the radar for them. He went 1-4 today and has really dropped off in May after a hot start. He’s still going to be one of the more interesting prospects to watch over the course of this season.
- Audry Perez’s lone hit was a 2-run HR
- Alex Castellanos hit a 3-run bomb to take a 1-run lead in the 9th for Springfield for his only hit of the game
- Maikel Cleto had a pretty good start, giving up 3 runs, 8 hits, 1 walk, and 1 HBP in 6 IP. He only gave up 1 extra-base hit and struck out 4.
- Sam Freeman and Nick Greenwood both pitched 1 scoreless inning
- Cook gave up 4 runs in 5 IP against the Cardinals, giving up 7 hits and striking out 6
Palm Beach 4, Brevard County 1
- Zack Cox was 1-2 with 2 walks. We complain that he doesn’t hit for power, and he does that. We complain that he doesn’t walk, and he starts drawing walks. Hey Zack, you can’t play 2nd base!!
- Luis Mateo finished 2-4 with a double, walk, and RBI
- Rainel Rosario was 1-2 with 2 walks
- Jordan Swagerty pitched 4.2 shutout innings, gave up 3 hits, 3 walks, and struck out 3. Swagerty has had a very good start to his professional career and is looking much better than his former/future teammate Seth Blair so far.
Cedar Rapids 10, Quad Cities 4
- Greg Garcia hit 3rd and finished 2-5 with a double and RBI
- Nick Longmire had an RBI double as his only hit of the game
- Robert Stock was 2-4 with a stolen base in his 6th game of the season, both singles
- Chris Edmondson finished 1-2 with 2 walks
- Anthony Ferrara struggled in 5 innings, as he gave up 7 hits, 4 runs, and 3 walks. He struck out 5

Why did Swagerty come out after 4.2 anyone know?
Good to hear about Adams. Hopefully he’ll continue to develop and either force his way into the big league club’s future plans or else raise his value high enough to net something good in a trade.
I wonder whether they are gonna slow swagerty down since he has pitched more innings now than he did all of last year
Cleto hit 101 on the stadium gun in Tulsa.
WOW! That is quite impressive. Does anyone know if Tulsa’s gun is usually high?
I’ve never heard that it runs fast, but I’m not positive.
If it was running fast, Cook was really struggling with velocity. Because his fastball was topping out at about 88-89.
Tulsa’s gun is pretty spot on. It’s possible it may run just a tad fast, but I haven’t heard any issues with it.
They go by the gun they chart with, which I believe gives more accurate readings than the stadium guns.
Keep taunting Cox about not being able to handle 2b. If anyone has any doubts about his hitting check out the discrepancy between his home and road stats. He’s hitting over .400 on the road with way more power than at home. Considering that he’s a redundant young 3b for us I’d like to see him promoted ASAP. The stats he’ll likely put up at Springfield will increase his trade value or force us into making a commitment to him.
Still I’d love to see him tried at 2b but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen.
I was at the Springfield/Tulsa game as well.
Some thoughts:
Cleto was throwing gas, but not much else. Hit 101, and 99 once each, I believe. Several fastballs in the 96-98 range. For throwing that hard he seemed “hittable”. I don’t know what his reputation is, but it didn’t look like his fastball moves much. Very inconsistent with his breaking stuff.
King and Simpson both got hit VERY hard. Greenwood looked intriguing. Is he a possible LOOGY down the road?
I know Ryan Jackson got off to a good start hitting this year, but I really don’t see him hitting consistently at the ML level. I think he’d make a terrific defensive SS in a heavy lineup, or a good bench guy.
I’d like to see Adams really work hard this offseason on his body. He can definitely stroke the ball, but there are a lot of guys like that that don’t stick in the Majors b/c they can’t find a spot to play, or they are never given the chance. Adams can hit, for sure. Might be good trade bait at some point.
Castellanos is intriguing. Not sure what to make of him, but the ball jumps off his bat.
I didn’t get to see enough of him on defense, but I like Jose Garcia some too.
I think Cleto looked hittable was because he really struggled with his location, got into a lot of deep counts. However Tulsa only had 1 hit throw like the first 4 innings. His offspeed was inconsistant but when he put in the zone they didnt touch it. He needs to work on staying closed as finishes his delivery (would fix the location problem) and improve his stamina, he looked really tired towards the end of his outing. Overall I was impressed and hope they keep him a starter in the long run.
Blake King has no idea where the ball is going after he throws it; IMO it looked like he doesnt trust his fastball and because of that was throwing way too many sliders. The two times Ive seen him in Tulsa he has looked terrible.
At least Anderson should get to play on a more regular basis now. his hitting could improve with more playing time. jose garcia has been hot and deserves a shot at AAA with Kozma in the majors and Solano not hitting.
Cox to Springfield … http://twitter.com/#!/BenBadler/status/73061965286748160
Wow—that is aggressive
No kidding, can’t say I’m surprised or disappointed by it though. Let’s push him and see how he ends up.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Shelby get’s called up at some point this year as well. I believe his FIP is 2.07 on the year and I think he could stand to be challenged a little more.
I do hope that we leave C. Martinez where he’s at for the year. If they were going to throw him in PB they should have just started him there due to the climate and him not used to pitching in the awful midwestern weather.
What are the general thoughts out there about the Cruz over Anderson call up?
Word is that Miller plus one will be promoted to Springfield sometime around the all-star break. Who comes into PB is anyone’s guess. I originally didn’t think that Rosenthal would move this year, but I think he may be one of the promotions. I have to say Siegrist has earned it, but I have yet to get a read on what the organization thinks of him. Ferrara is another possibility. I really kind of think Martinez will stay put with Rodriguez. That opinion is only based on the same logic they used with starting him out in EST – but who knows?
Grrrrr…..a few days earlier, and I could have seen him.
Zack Cox going to Springfield per Kary Booher
http://blogs.news-leader.com/cardinals/2011/05/24/double-a-cards-receive-10-first-rounder-cox/
AA is the biggest adjustment for a hitter, thet see breaking and offspeed stuff in hitters counts. Hopefully we’ll see what cox has
It’s also the easiest hitting environment in the system. I’d be very surprised/disappointed if he doesnt start hitting for more power.
Congrats to Cox. We will miss him in PB. Looks like Niko is injured, he hasn’t played in a few games so Cox was properly promoted to replace him for now. They have had a few injuries in Springfield. I think Shelby is ready for promotion as well.
According to the News-Leader Niko to Palm Beach.
Whoa! To play SS, or is he done there?
Niko is heading back to Palm Beach.
Interesting developments with Niko and Zack. I’ll put up a new post on it.
I am not too surprised about the Cox promotion but I thought they would wait another few weeks at least. I just posted my thoughts on this over at http://www.redbirddugout.com if your interested.
