The farm went a collective 3-0, while great pitching was the flavor of the night. Each team only gave up 1 run, while Springfield enjoyed a game off as they prepare for the introduction of Zack Cox.
  • Matt Carpenter was the MVP of the lineup as he was the only player for the Redbirds to get more than 1 hit or go for extra bases. He finished 3-5 with a triple and RBI. Carpenter continues to post a steady slash line of .295/.423/.390 in Memphis this year. You’d like to see his power improve, but he’s still showing a well above average walk rate, especially with 30 walks compared to 23 strikeouts.
  • Aaron Luna and Mark Hamilton each contributed a single, while Luna had 1 RBI and Hamilton added 2
  • Andrew Brown walked three times and was 1-2
  • James Rapoport and Nick Derba both walked twice but went 0-7 combined at the plate
  • Lance Lynn outpitched his counterpart, Scott Kazmir, (understatement) to the tune of 6.1 IP, 5 hits, 1 R, 3 walks, and 7 K
  • Kazmir was shelled for 6 runs, 4 walks, and 2 hits in 1.2 innings
  • Kyle Conley hit cleanup and finished 3-4 with a double and RBI
  • Luis Mateo was the only other batter with more than 1 hit as he finished 2-4.  He also recorded his 7th stolen base
  • Patrick Elkins took Cox’s spot in the order and at 3rd base and was 0-4 with a walk
  • Luis De La Cruz added a double as the only other extra-base hit for the Cardinals
  • Joe Kelly took a no-hitter into the 8th inning and only gave up 1 hit in 7.1 IP. He gave up 1 run, walked 4, and struck out 4. He posted 15 groundouts compared to 3 in the air and is off to a good start this year. You’d like to see the walks decrease (20 in 46.1 IP), but he’s posting very good groundball rates and has only given up 1 HR on the year.
  • Brett Zawacki pitched 1.1 perfect innings out of the pen
  • Nick Longmire and Victor Sanchez each went 2-4 with a double
  • Cody Stanley hit 3rd and went 2-4 with 1 RBI, but he also recorded his 5th error on the year
  • Starlin Rodriguez finished 3-4 on the night
  • Virgil Hill had the hat trick in K’s and stole his 4th base on the year. Coming from an incredibly athletic family, all Hill has shown on the year is his speed
  • Kevin Siegrist went 7 innings and only gave up 2 hits, 1 unearned run, and 3 walks. He struck out 6 but also had a wild pitch
  • Boone Whiting struck out 4 batters in 2 innings of shutout ball. As mentioned before on here, he showed impeccable control last year and continues to display a good K:BB ratio of just over 3:1. We’ll need to see how he pitches in Palm Beach before getting excited, but he may replace the spots of the relievers we’ve seen graduate recently from the farm.

The Palm Beach game must’ve been a wild one. D’Marcus Ingram got tossed in the 3rd after getting hit by a pitch. I assume he either charged the mound, or had some choice words for all involved. Then the ump tossed the Brevard County pitcher and manager.

    • Gruntosaurus says:

The Ingram HBP happened after Kelly winged Kentrail Davis, perhaps the closest that Brevard County has to a “prospect” (man, is the Milwaukee farm system awful), with a pitch in the bottom of the first. With only two umpires in a high-A game, and tempers obviously running high, the rest of that game must have been … tense.

The BC run scored when Kelly walked the bases loaded, then got a double play. The score was already 2-1 by the time the no-hitter was broken up in the 8th. Weird game all around.

  2. Clark says:

When joe kelly is throwin strikes he is a tough one to hit

  3. Indiana Cardinal says:

My question relates to Andrew Brown. How similar, for those who have seen them play, is he to Allen Craig, hitting wise, fielding wise, and concerning their lack of a permanent position and versatility to be used at different postitions? Thanks.

    • Gruntosaurus says:

What I saw of him reminded me more of Chris Duncan than Allen Craig. (And be it noted, I’d rather have Craig.)

    • mattb says:

Allen Craig has looked pretty solid to me as a fielder, albeit in a small sample. He’s very athletic, so I don’t think it’s fair to lump him in with other “bad-bodied” players (not that you were doing that).

I think he’s kind of a poor-man’s Holliday. He just pounds the ball even when he makes outs, and has deceptive athletic ability.

It seemed like Matt Carpenter hadn’t been mentioned in the DFR for ages. Good to see him have a nice game.
Does anybody know if Lance Lynn has shown a sustained increase in velocity so far this season?

  5. Mookie says:

Based on what I saw of Brown in Springfield I’d say he’s less athletic than Craig, and without a position. He’s a 1B by default. Bat will play but the glove is suspect.

Do not know if this was brought up before
Ronny Gill age 22 was 17 yr old Grabiel Hernandez in 2009

Seeing Tony Cruz play well last night for the Cards reminded me of when he was first drafted, and the guy known then as Arnoldi got promoted like 3 times in two weeks.

Thanks to Az for keeping this place going after Erik stepped aside, and BTW, the Cardinals should donate the ticket sales from tomorrow night’s QC game at Busch to this website for getting people excited about Carlos Martinez.

    • BigRob says:

Donating the ticket sales is a good idea. Even though the Cards and Royals have both already donated $25,000 each, I wouldn’t mind seeing this money go to Joplin as well. That may even prompt more fans to go to the game.

  8. Cards Fan in Chitown #2 says:

Anyone heard anything about Oscar Taveras? He should be about ready to come off the DL and supposedly this injury wasn’t as bad as the last one correct?

I hate seeing a young kid like that with so much potential get struck with injuries like that.

    • Zach says:

I believe it was reported yesterday(I read on twitter) that he will be on the DL at least two more weeks, unfortunately

      • Gruntosaurus says:

Frankly, at this point I’d rather he was out for long enough to get the durn thing 100% healed, rather than hurry him back. He’s still young and has plenty of time to reach the Show. Pressing him to do so ASAP may create a risk of this condition becoming chronic, and that would be baaaaad.

  9. T Bird says:

Siegrist has been very impressive so far this year. .202 average against, Whip right around 1.00. Out of the 7 earned runs he’s allowed this year, he gave up 5 in one start. Anyone have a scouting report on him?

    • RCHIII says:

I would like to see a Siegrist report too. All the guy does is consistently perform. Nobody has talked about any head spinner pitches he has from what I have seen, but the guy obviously has outstanding control.

      • Lou Schuler says:

Over at BP, Kevin Goldstein refers to him in today’s column as a “smoke-and-mirror lefty” and says his FB rarely climbs above the 80s. It’ll be interesting to see what Siegrist does at higher levels against better competition.

        • Andrew says:

I wouldn’t call it smoke and mirrors, he threw 90-91 consistently when I saw him pitch but he got guys out and people didn’t hit the ball very hard against him. It’s weird because it looks like he should throw harder because hes big and sturdy at 6’5

          • RCHIII says:

He sounds a little bit like Copeland. And they performed comparably at JC last year. I say promote until the hitters catch up with them. I’m not sure the Cards see it that way or not. Siegrist had earned the next promotion to PB in my opinion. If he doesn’t get it, then you have an idea what the Cards think of him.

            • bc says:

He’s probably on the Nick Additon track. Keep bumping them up until they can’t get anyone out anymore.

        • hugecardsfan says:

Smoke and mirrors may be fair but I’d add control. The kid can pitch. You can’t start 8 games and carry a 1.29 ERA without being able to pitch. I doubt he’s going to fall apart at Palm Beach.

  10. Andrew says:

Siegrist or Ferrara for sure. One of the two.
