The farm put up a record of 1-3 on the night though Shelby Miller deserved more than the no decision he was saddled with. On to the good stuff.
Hitting:
- Jim Rapoport went 2-for-4 w/ 1 RBI from the lead off spot
- Andrew Brown continues to put his name in the DFR, he went 2-for-4 w/ 2 2B and 1 RBI
- Donovan Solano had 1 2B in his 3 PA, he also score a run
- P.S. The Omaha Storm Chasers have a terrible name but have a stacked roster for a AAA team
Pitching:
- Brandon Dickson got the start and put up a pretty lousy line, 4 IP, 12 H, 4 R, 1 BB, and 4 K
- Raul Valdes and Chuckie Fick pitched 2.0 scoreless innings apiece, Raul struck out 2 and Fick only 1
- Jess Todd delivered 1.0 scoreless inning that included 2 H and 1 K
- Vin Mazzaro, who got shelled by the MLB Indians eleven days ago to the tune of 2.1 IP, 11 H, 14 ER, 3 BB, and 2 K, had a good start against the Redbirds, he went 6.0 IP and had 6 K
Hitting:
- Jose Garcia went 2-for-4 w/ 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, and 1 R
- Ryan Jackson and Steven Hill both went 2-for-5, Hill had 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 SB, and 2 R while Jackson contributed 1 RBI and 1 R
- Zack Cox did not contribute a hit, but did walk 3 times in his 5 PA, he also scored

- Chris Swauger went 2-for-3 w/ 1 HR, 1 BB, 3 RBI, and 2 R

- Kyle Conley was the offensive star of the night, he went 4-for-4 w/ 1 2B and 2 RBI
- D’Marcus Ingram and Jarred Bogany also contributed with singles, Bogany scored
Pitching:
- Shelby Miller was masterful, 7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, and 12 K
- Tyler Lyons was not, 0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R (1 ER), and 1 BB
- Keith Butler mopped up but the damage was already done, he went 1.1 scoreless that included 1 H and 3 K

Good to see Ryan Jackson get hits in his final two at bats after a 0 for 3 start last night, maybe that brief stay under .250 will be what jump starts him back into a hot run. Blake King didn’t have to wait to long to see his old team having a Blake King style inning.
Springfield Bottom of the 8th
Pitcher Change: Blake King replaces Matt Nevarez, batting 9th.
Alex Castellanos called out on strikes.
Zack Cox walks.
Thomas Pham called out on strikes.
Chris Swauger hit by pitch. Zack Cox to 2nd.
Audry Perez strikes out swinging.
Tommy Pham is pretty exciting, i hope he isn’t daryl jones II though
I really feel Pham’s season has got lost in the wash somewhat this year. He’s put up hitting numbers that only put him a step or so behind Adams and Castellanos, and he’s a centrefielder with apparently good athleticism and a strong arm. Those sort of guys don’t have to hit much to be useful MLB players (especially for a team that’s looking like perhaps having two left-handers long-term in the OF in Jay and Rasmus). I know it’s his second time around but his .400-odd wOBA in AA is now the equivalent of a full season IIRC. Obviously you have to take any hitting stats in Springfield with a pinch of salt, but I think his attitude might be better than Jones’ was and, at just 22, he’s still age-appropriate.
I think he’s nearly as good a prospect as DJ Tools was after his big year in SF (2008 was it?). Interesting to note that most people had Tools as our #2-5 prospect after that year, and yet Pham might not be in most people’s top 10s at the moment. I honestly think our system is as good as I can ever remember it being, which is pretty cool given we’ve graduated about half a dozen guys to the majors in the last 2 years.
Good point Monk but we’ve been burned before by getting excited over the bump in numbers a prospect puts up at Springfield. However, in Pham’s case I thought I read something about Tommy discovering he had an eye issue in the off season and getting new contacts (or laser eye surgery). If that is case, then there may be a way to explain his improvement at AA aside from the midwest league effect. I hope 2011 is a sign of things to come from Tommy. We need another outfield prospect at AAA besides Adron Chambers.
I would put Castellanos ahead of Pham at this point. Never been a fan of the “tools” argument. Having tools and knowing how to use the ones you have are very different.
As for Memphis..Chambers has seemed to struggl at Memphis so far this year as well as Rapoport. I would definitely put those two behind Brown and Luna at this point as well. DJ must still be hurt as he hasn’t played in forever it seems.
Castellanos is 25, hasn’t hit anywhere near this well before, and isn’t as defensively valuable as Pham. So – you’re wrong.
Exactly the same points can be made re: Brown versus Chambers, except Brown is even older (27(!) I believe), a TERRIBLE defender with no apparent position, and Chambers is only in his first go-around at AAA.
Brown isn’t even a prospect, really – he’s a left-handed Nick Stavinoha.
Kyle Conley might be someone to keep an eye on. He was a 7th round pick in 2009 and had a great start with
Batavia. He missed virtually all of last year which is why, as a 24 year old, he’s still in class A. He’s always had good power and is hitting extremely well lately for PB. Walks do not appear to be his strong point but, with Cox promoted, he looks like the only bat of interest in that lineup.
Does anyone know how many pitches approx Miller throws per outing?
I don’t know what is average is, but he threw 104 pitches last night.
Tell us more about Keith Butler. Righties cannot hit the guy.
Is Matt Adams hurt? He’s sat two days in a row now.
Just found my answer: Adams has an oblique injury on the left side of his torso and may not play until Wednesday.
Dang. Hope this doesn’t stunt his progress.

“Am hearing Shelby Miller’s strong start last night likely his last at Palm Beach. Destination: Springfield.”

Pop Warner is a happy man today
I can’t say enough about how much I love the John Vuch style of fast promotion! It seemed or felt like to me at times Luhnow liked to leave his guys in one place too long to make them look better stats wise rather than push then and risk bad outings.
I don’t know if this is Vuch-style. Maybe cardinals style. Luhnow was criticized for being too aggressive with prospects. Remember Kozma to AA. And when Vuch got his job in the winter he talked about being more patient with prospects.
Not leaving a lot in Palm Beach…
Well the purpose of a minor league system is to produce major league talent. Not to win minor league championships.
So put me in the “who cares” column.
Palm Beach was 11 under even with these guys, no big deal at all. Xman should start hitting some at 1b. Niko may pick it up back in High A. Rosario continues to be good. They weren’t a good team early in the year and they won’t be now.
They had 512 people in the stands for a Shelby Miller start on a Friday night they don’t deserve anything.
Correct me if i’m wrong, but i’ve never thought of the FSL as a “fans” league like other minor leagues. Seems like they play an awful lot of weekday early day games too.
Your right, they have had a few 10:30 Tuesday morning games. Maybe people just don’t come out to baseball games in Florida and they need the field for something else later in the night?
Saint Louis only had 1600 for Carlos Martinez – maybe we should take their major league franchise away from them.
What do the Cardinals have to do with a random minor league game played 200 miles from its local market?
200 miles from its local market? The game was played at Busch stadium!
I know where it was played and Its 200 miles from QC’s season ticket holders. Attempting to somehow compare Palm Beach on a Friday in its own park to a team playing 200 miles from home on a Thursday is silly. Just because the city loves the Cardinals don’t magically make some other team they don’t know more marketable, hell you could have the Sox and Yanks at Busch and its going to do less than the Cardinals.
Who are you, Zack Cox?
Best move for Miller, this sets him up right where he needs to be for next season. He gets plenty of starts at AA this year, some extended spring training next year and is ready for a call up if needed and go right into the rotation.
