Hope you had a better Memorial Day than Memphis, while Springfield played a tight game and QC won both sides of their double-header.
A special thanks to all of the veterans out there who read our board and a moment of silence to those who have fallen.
- The Redbirds offense could only muster up 3 hits today, while Omaha dominated with a stacked lineup
- Andrew Brown hit 3rd and had the only extra-base hit of the night. He finished 1-3 with a triple and walk. He’s a borderline AAAA player, but he has a line of .357/.442/.620 through ~130 at bats so far in his first year in the PCL at the age of 26.
- Daryl Jones and Bryan Anderson both went 1-3, providing the only other 2 hits for Memphis
- James Rapoport led off and walked twice. He’s showing good patience at the top of the order but absolutely no power whatsoever
- Adam Ottavino struggled against a very good lineup today, giving up 6 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks in 5.1 innings. He also hit 2 batters, had 2 errors, and gave up his 8th HR on the season
- Jess Todd continues to strike guys out (2 in 1.2 innings) but gave up 2 runs out of the bullpen
- Zack Cox went deep for his first Texas League home run and 4th on the year. He finished the night 1-4 with 2 RBI’s and has shown improved patience at the plate over the past month.
- Audry Perez was 3-4 with a double and HR. He has a .269 OBP compared to a .275 average. Quick bit of trivia that often comes up during each season: How can a player have a lower OBP than his AVG? First to answer gets 1,000 FR bonus points, which can be redeemed at the end of the year for absolutely nothing!!
- Alex Castellanos recorded 2 RBI’s with a single
- The rest of the Cardinals starting lineup recorded 1 hit each, outside of Alan Ahmady who went 0-4. The team scored 7 runs (2 earned) off of Casey Kelly, the top prospect for the Padres
- David Kopp gave up a whopping 4 HR’s over 5.1 innings, which led to 6 runs scored. We all count down the days until Shelby Miller makes his Texas League debut
- Scott Schneider struck out the side in a perfect inning of work
- Neither starter was exactly helped by the 22 MPH wind that was blowing out to left field
Quad Cities 8, Burlington 3 in 8 innings
- The River Bandits scored 5 in “extra innings”, led by a 3-run HR by Robert Stock. He was the MVP for the farm tonight, as he had 5 RBI’s off of that HR and a double. After a slow start coming off of extended spring training, he’s 6 for his last 11 after playing 9 games on the season.
- Virgil Hill was 1-3 with his 6th SB on the year
- Chris Edmondson hit 2-4 with a double and RBI
- Anthony Ferrara had a line of 4.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 BB, and 3 K. He had a wild pitch and gave up a HR
- Justin Wright was incredible out of the pen after striking out 7 in 3.1 perfect innings. He has 42 K’s in 26.2 IP, compared to 8 walks
Quad Cities 3, Burlington 2 in 7 innings
- Chris Edmondson once again had 2 hits, also recording another double and RBI
- Cody Stanley started the 2nd game at catcher and finished 2-4 with a HR and 2 RBI’s
- Both teams combined for 9 errors, which led to all but 1 of the runs being unearned
- Kevin Siegrist pitched 6 innings without giving up an earned run but didn’t record a K. He gave up 2 unearned runs, but it was enough to get the win and run his record on the season to 8-1
- Boone Whiting remains one of the more interesting relievers for the Cards in the lower levels after throwing a perfect inning and getting 1 K for his 4th save on the year

Sac flies count against OBP but not AVG
DING DING DING We have a winner!!
Out at second going for a double. Gets a hit, but is not on base. Woot!!!!
Also think a sac fly would do it?
Still counts as a single and goes towards the OBP, as well. Your 2nd answer was right, though.
This Robert Stock position player charade looks like it will never freaking end.
I think a sac is counted as a plate appearance for obp but does not figure into average. Sad to see Otto get knocked around. It appears he is on a slow slide out of the Cards org. Baseball is a cruel sport on prospects. Such a low success rate.
Was at Memphis game. Ottovino pitched ok until the 6th, constantly working in and out of trouble. Wheels came off in 6th, culminating in a grand slam that broke the game open. The defense behind him wasn’t great today, with a couple groundballs that should have been double plays not turned, and reppaport and brown turning to separate flyouts into doubles. Sun and ball being hit directly over his head played a factor on rappaport’s, brown just took a poor route. Brown is just a bad outfielder. Besides the misplayed flyball, he also let a groundball go under his glove (run scoring error) and blew the transfer from glove to hand (apparently he was not given an error for this, but should have been as runner advanced a base.
Rapapport has a surprisingly strong outfield arm, though his assist was due to a terrible baserunning mistake (I could have doubled the guy off). I think the guy thought there was 2 outs and left on contact from first. He was halfway to third when ball was caught.
Anderson looked adequate behind the dish. Darryl jones smoked one to center, but to dead center (deepest part of ballpark) and Cain made a nice play at the wall to rob him of a double/triple. Jones had the best sound off the bat of any player in the game.
@yadimo- that counts as a single and adds to the player’s OBP
I think it’s time to ask whether the Cardinals have a sleeper in Siegrist (drafted in 41st round) or is he just another too-old-for-his league junkballer whose stuff won’t translate into success at higher levels? The WL record and ERA, however, are spectacular. And what about Justin Wright? He’s tiny, but where are all those Ks coming from? Can anyone shed any light on these matters?
Justin Wright looks interesting as a bullpen piece, a la Tim Collins or other small lefties who can strike people out.
As for Siegrist, IMO, he’s the lefty junkballer who gets exposed at higher levels. But (!), he’s been great so far, so let’s push him ahead and see if he can be successful at higher levels. He wouldn’t be the first junkballing lefty to have some success in the majors.
Kevin Goldstein thinks Siegrist is a “sleeper” which in his vernacular means he is not a prospect as of now, but has a chance to develop into one basically.
I saw Justin Wright when QC was at Busch last week. His combo of FB and CB is impressive. He definitely has a future in the bullpen – not just as a LOOGY either.
Did Schneider work in relief to get work after his .1 inning start or is this a permanent move to the bullpen? I think its a little premature for his permanent move, possibly just extra work….
According to Pop Warner-Schneider is going to the bullpen. Miller starts Friday in Texas so that puts him starting in Springfield 6/9. That is a double header with Tulsa.
Attended the Springfield game yesterday afternoon and had the following observations:
Kopp: Repeatedly touched 93 on the gun, but fairly straight fastball. A ton of hard contact. With the wind blowing out he was lucky to get to the sixth before the wheels completely came off. Looked like a totally different pitcher than last year. Hope he can get past the injuries and put it back together.
Perez: Ball jumped off his bat. He didn’t exhibit much patience at the plate, but was a couple of feet away from a 2 HR day.
Cox: Looked good on the HR (382 to left-center). Looked horrible against a sidearm lefty in a subsequent at bat. Took strike 3 right down the middle. His splits at PB aren’t terribly encouraging. Made several nice picks and flashed a good arm. Watched Craig here for a full season, and for whatever its worth, he looks like a far superior defender.
Adams: Only PH, but he is a big dude. I wouldn’t call him overweight as much as just a big boned kid. Had a good PA.
Castellanos: Ball jumped off his bat in a couple of PAs. Looks like he is ready for Memphis, although at his age-and with a glut of limited OFs in the high minors-it’s unclear to me whether he will receive a promotion, deservedly or not.
Schneider: Looked really strong coming out of the pen. Sat 93. Not sure if this is an increase over his normal velocity or not, but with the black hole that is currently the Memphis pen there may be some potential for advancement there. Faced four batters, and he made an error on a flukey grounder that was in no man’s land near first base. SA is a strong hitting club, and Schneider had the best pitching performance of the game.
Jackson: Looked like a totally different player against a LH (see Cox above) than against the righties he faced.
Cox>>>>>Craig defensively. Not that this is news, just want to clarify.
Who says that? Cox isn’t very good on D at all. Cox does have a much better arm though.
I saw Cox many times when he was at Arkansas. Unless he has regressed since then he is not a bad defender. He is slightly below average at worst. I personally think he is average and this is about what he should be given his range and build.
Boone whiting keeps chugging along at QC. His K:BB rate isn’t quite as good as last year but he’s up to 5:1 for his last 10 games. GB rate is up this year and his BAA against is improved.
For his minor league career he now has 82 IP with 72H 13BB and 100K’s.
Didn’t say Cox was a great defender-only that in a 1 game sample he looked much better there than Craig (who I watched for 20+ games here). I expected him to resemble Wallace/Craig more than a good defender. Based on a ridiculously small ss, he appeared better than initial reports from the lower levels. No one is going to mistake him for Rolen, but he moved well & has a strong arm.
