I’m not quite done with my write up from last weekend’s Springfield games. That should run Monday next week.  In the meantime, here’s a post I stumbled across in which everyone made their predictions.

The correct answers are:

1) Zach Cox – Yes; $2M; 8/16/10

2) Seth Blair – Yes; $750k; 7/30/10

3) Tyrell Jenkins – Yes; $1.3M; 8/10/10

4) Jordan Swagerty – Yes; $625k; 8/16/10

5) Austin Wilson – No [/weeps]

I was personally too optimistic on Wilson.  I heard lots of rumors about those negotiations before the signing deadline and they stayed cautiously optimistic the whole time. So, admittedly, a big miss on my part there. I hope Wilson doesn’t regret not signing. He’s hitting reasonably well though not great by college standards – .331/.366/.451 — but he passed up a huge opportunity to pursue his degree.

This is not breaking news by any stretch of the imagination, but I wanted to address some of the Cardinal minor league releases this week since some of them were of a higher profile.

Zack Cox is not the only 2010 draftee making the jump to Palm Beach this season, he is joined by Adam Melker a left-handed hitting outfielder who was drafted in the 44th round of the 2010 MLB draft as a senior out of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.  He did not put up outstanding numbers in college, hitting just around .300.  However, unlike Cox, Melker played in Batavia last season and torched the league with a wOBA of .393.  His wRC+ against the rest of the league (100 being average) was 144.  Coming off his senior year in college, he was a little old for this league, but his domination was good to see none the less.

Considering his age,  (he already turned 23 before the season started) the Cardinals jumped him over Quad Cities and put him in Palm Beach to start the season.  He hasn’t has as much success in Palm Beach, but there are some signs of life out of the outfielder.  He’s hitting 22.4% line drives, which should give him a higher BABIP than his current .286.  However, instead of pop-ups (he has 0!), he has pounded over 57% of his balls in play into ground balls.  Statcorner thinks that his numbers should float back up as his wOBA jumps up 30 points when you account for park and batted ball rates.

Adam Melker may not be much more than an organisational outfielder, but the Cardinals are going to push him along to find out what they have from the Cal Poly product sooner or later.  However, if he picks his game up towards Batavia levels, he will continue to move through the Cardinals system.
