There’s been a lot of discussion in the comments lately about what Matt Adams ceiling is or what a first baseman in the majors looks like. I thought I’d provide a spectrum of outcomes for the major league level to show what kind of offense and defense is required to be an average (2 WAR) player.

Walters Springfield vs. Arkansas, 12:07pm: Michael Blazek Palm Beach @ Clearwater, 6:00pm: John Gast Quad Cities vs. Clinton, 7:00pm: Seth Blair? (Previously Jordan Swagerty’s spot in the rotation) Springfield wins in extra innings, while the rest of the farm lose 1-run games. I said last time that I would make up for no scouting reports on opposing players, so click on to read further about some interesting players competing against our guys tonight. Quick name the pitcher from the 2009 draft who has advanced the furthest in the Cardinals minor league system thus far. Shelby Miller? Nope. Actually, that recognition currently goes to Scott Schneider drafted in the 20th round, 609th overall. An unheralded pick out of St. Mary’s College in California, Schneider has fit easily into the Cardinals pitching philosophy of throwing strikes and getting groundballs. In 2009, Schneider began at Batavia where he overmatched the young hitters striking out nearly a third of the batters he faced. He was quickly promoted to Quad Cities where he would again strikeout batters at an excellent clip, generate impressive groundball rates and display above average control. In 2010, Schneider returned to Quad Cities (joined in the rotation by Shelby Miller) and was promoted to Palm Beach at mid-season. After moderate success at Palm Beach, Schneider’s peripheral statistics (K-rate, GB rate) have both rebounded nicely as he begins the year in AA Springfield. I had the opportunity to exchange some questions with Scott and his answers follow below. Memphis @ Albuquerque, 2:05pm: Adam Ottavino Springfield vs. Arkansas, 7:07pm: Deryk Hooker Palm Beach @ St. Lucie, 5:30pm: Shelby Miller Quad Cities @ Wisconsin, 6:35pm: Trevor Rosenthal The farm goes 1-2 on the night. Memphis provided the only win. Here’s a two part interview between (what I believe is) a Palm Beach staffer and top pitching prospect Shelby Miller. They’re brief but I’m actually surprised by how blunt he is in answering what could be construed as critical questions. He also seems much older than I perceived him to be last year. Not quite the same fresh faced, wide-eyed look we got from the Texan right out of high school. Quad Cities provides the system’s only win tonight courtesy of Carlos Martinez and Kevin Siegrist. The lower minors carry the system to a 2-2 night. How about that past future redbird Jaime Garcia? Let the goodness shower over you. Couple personal programming notes: First, I’ll be in Springfield this weekend getting a look at Matt Adams, Ryan Jackson, Tommy Pham and I think the pitching pair of Kevin Thomas and Nick Additon. Secondly, be sure to check in Monday as we’ll have the first Future Rebirds prospect interview of this year (and in quite some time). This is more of a discussion question than one that I have any kind of an answer to. There’s some early speculation that the Mets’ could make Jose Reyes available this summer. The Cardinals would, at first blush, seem like an obvious match. |
