Draft Day is less than a week away. I know that we haven’t had much draft coverage here this year (something I need to remedy in the future) but we’ll have a cover it live chat for the evening telecast of the draft on Monday June 6th, 6pm CST.

We’ll also have a chat on Tuesday beginning around 11am CST to cover the second day of selections and, at least, a static thread on Wednesday for any picks made that day.

We’ll dig up as much info as we can find on the Cardinals draft picks much like we did last year. (View the 2010 draft coverage.)

If there’s anything that you want to see in the post draft coverage this year, now is your chance to ask but no guarantees.  I’ll be getting in touch with the other writers shortly to work out who will cover what but I leave for Las Vegas on the 7th so my time will be at least partially restricted due to travel.

Is there anywhere to see a comprehensive list of who all signed from the 2010 draft? Also, is there anywhere to look to see who is in EST with the Cardinals right now? Thanks

Any idea who our #1 pick will be? I saw the thread on the guys we brought in a few weeks ago, but I don’t know if any of those guys were first-round caliber picks..

    • azruavatar says:

If anyone says they know who the Cardinals pick will be at #22, they are lying. It’s all guesses and speculation after the first 5 picks or so.

Keith Law has the Cardinals in on some HS prep arms, for whatever that is worth.

      • Lou Schuler says:

I keep reading that the Pirates haven’t decided who they’re taking first overall. Or, if they have decided, they’re keeping pretty quiet. If no one knows who’s going first, there’s no way to figure who’s going to be there when we pick.

This seems like a real scout’s draft. With so many high schoolers in the mix, and so many health questions about some of the top college players, stats aren’t going to tell us much.

      • Karmaloop says:

I’ve heard from a couple of sources (and don’t ask where because I don’t remember where) that the Cardinals are looking at prep players this year. That’s not saying that if the right college player fell that they’d pass over them. I’m just saying that assuming the draft goes as plans, look for a prep player.

    • Karmaloop says:

There have been a couple of names thrown out there. Levi Michael was one about a week or two back, but it seems his stock might have risen a little. There have been talk that the Mets were going to go cheap this year and take him at 13. I’m not buying that completely, but I don’t think they’re going to be big spenders this year.

Larry Greene is another guy that’s been thrown around quite a bit. Big time pop in his bat, some questions about his ability to make consistent contract. Should sign for around slot, but nothing definitive. Javier Baez, Dillon Howard, and Brandon Nimmo/Derek Fisher have all been mentioned as possible picks.

Up until a couple of days ago, there was some talk that the Cardinals were intrigued by Taylor Guerrieri. But his stock has as much helium in it as any prospect this year.

I’m still holding out hope that Archie Bradley somehow falls to us, but with the Angels at 17 and Red Sox at 19 I’m not expecting anything to happen.

      • Andrew says:

I completely agree with almost everything you said. Didn’t know about our specific interest in Taylor Guerrieri, I hadn’t heard anywwhere we were connected to him. Obviously most teams would be interested in a guy with his stuff. I know for sure that we worked Larry Greene out at Busch recently. His group included Alex Dickerson yuck for me unless its in the 2nd round.

I’m also hoping Bradley falls as he will want alot of money and im guessing a MLB contract. Normally I would think he would fall but Florida payed Josh Beckett 12 years ago a huge contract as a HS pitcher. Hoping he falls though.

        • cariocacardinal says:

The Cards work out many guys that are non first round (Adams was one) so I wouldnt put much stock in the workouts being related to the first round pick.

          • Andrew says:

I do agree with this but also the fact that they were worked out shows that we have interest in them. We worked out Trout in 09 and he would have been our pick had Miller not fell. Reports came out that we were interested in Larry Greene even before he worked out. There is at least some interest. Luckily most think that Dickson is no longer a first rounder so him in the 2nd may be ok but I rather go in another direction.

        • Nikolaz says:

yeah i dont like dickerson much either
“YUCK” is prolly the best words to describe him i wouldnt even take him in 2nd maybe 3rd

        • Karmaloop says:

The Taylor Guerrieri mention was a soft one, was brought up somewhere that I didn’t hold a lot of credibility (mainly because the guy I heard it from said he heard from another third party source) but it does seem to fit the idea that Mo is targeting prep players, arms in particular.

      • HogwildCard says:

I would be ok with any of those guys minus Greene or Michael. Not really big on either of those two even though Michael is projected high. Maybe I am just scared of the cards picking a shortstop give their past track record with ss’s in the first round.

      • Felonius_Monk says:

I’d be pretty pissed off if we took Larry Greene with the #22 pick. None of those names really excite me, Howard and Baez would be OK I guess, not big on Michael but he’d not be the worst pick either. I like Swihart and Bell a lot.

I really agree with Shanky below – I reckon we end up with a top-15-ish guy who falls due to demands/signability concerns, a-la Cox last year, especially as we’ve got no supplemental picks (in a strong draft) so they can put a lot of $ into #1. If it’s Bradley or Bell and they get them signed, that would be awesome.

      • Vision says:

The guy I’m hearing us connected to the most is Henry Owens, a prep lefty. I’ve also heard we’re in on prep arms heavy, and that there will definitely be a few we like once we’re on the clock.

It’s also becoming clear that the draft was hyped by the media and made out to be a better draft than the clubs themselves believe it to be. Reading teams think there is a lot of “good” but not a lot of “great.” Also, that teams picking in the 20′s are in the best spots because there isn’t much- if any, difference between the bottom of top-10 and mid-20′s.

        • Felonius_Monk says:

I really like Owens as well. That would suit me!

Also agree about the draft – don’t think there are too many real once-in-a-generation talents there. Shame we don’t have any supp picks, however, as there’s a lot of guys in the 40-50 range who’d be top-20 picks in some lighter years. This also highlights the folly of giving guys like Ryan Franklin unnecessary extensions – he could’ve turned into a type-B supplemental pick this year.

  3. Shanky says:

I’ve read anywhere from Josh Bell, the Dallas HS outfielder (and Boras client), prep RHP Dillon Howard of Searcy, Ark., North Carolina college SS Levi Michael, and juco inf Cory Spangenberg.

If last two drafts are any indication, they’ll take the highest-rated player available that falls to us. My best guess: Look at the consensus top 10-15, and look at those where signability is a question. One of those guys might be a Cardinal.

I guess I’ll make my prediction later on if we do another “pick our top 3 rounds” game.

  4. Indiana Cardinal says:

What about a “for fun” pool where the top 30 or so projected picks are listed with some short write up and then we can post both “who we wish/want the Cards to pick” (which can be realistic or not) and “who we think they will pick”, with the correct pick winning a “Great Guess Award”?

    • azruavatar says:

Thinking about this for the last couple days. Not sure how I do that without ripping off BA, BP or Keith Law hardcore. The top 30 are somewhat fluid still and to do a “short writeup” on them is darn near impossible. I don’t even bother watching video for some of the top guys since I know we won’t have a shot at them.

  5. Nikolaz says:

im wondering how true the rumors are that we might pick the raw powered first baseman Larry Greene there has been alot of talk about him at our spot with the whole pujols leaving possibly which i hate even thinking about

    • Karmaloop says:

I think as of right now, most people think he’ll be able to stick in the outfield. And he has been linked to the Cardinals pick. Definitely not the best pick, but we could do far worse.

      • Nikolaz says:

yea in my opinion id like us to go out for another pitcher cause we could lose carp within two years then lohse is in the same situation wainwright in i think 3 so we might need to stock up pitchers and maybe meo or tyler anderson

      • Vision says:

Where do people think he’ll stick in the OF? That’s genuine interest in seeing that. Everything I’ve seen of him (very little) and read of him (quite a bit), he’s a pretty bad defensive player who will grow into a 1B/DH type player with a lot of power and lots of holes in his swing.

FWIW, I hope we stay away from Greene, whom I don’t think ends up in the 1st round at all.

    • cariocacardinal says:

I don’t have a lot of strong opinions bout players in the draft but Larry Greene seems too much of a risk for the first round in this draft.

      • Nikolaz says:

thats wat i thaught too but i swear his name keeps popping up and im just like i dont think hes a 1st round pick we could get him in 2nd or 3rd maybe but hes a better of

    • Felonius_Monk says:

Linking Greene with Pujols leaving seems a bit unrelated. By the time Greene is ready for a full-time role in the Majors (if he makes it) it’ll be perhaps 4-5 years after the end of Albert’s current deal. Plus, he’s quite likely to be able to stick in a corner outfield spot. I don’t think the two situations are really related at all.

  6. Shanky says:

Wouldn’t be surprised if Daniel Norris is the pick. It’s conceivable he could be there at 22, and he could be the lefty counterpart to Miller. Plus, unless I’m mistaken, he’s considered the top prep LHP in the draft.

    • Karmaloop says:

I’m not completely convinced he’ll be on the board. Pretty projectable left hander with potentially three plus pitches. Call me crazy, but I’d be surprised if he’s on the board when the Cardinals pick.

      • Andrew says:

I think it’s unlikely Norris will be available, he’s the top prep lefty arm in the draft and there hasn’t been alot of rumors on it taking him a ton of money to sign him so no need for him to fall down the board. I think he goes from about 17-20. Just out of reach from us.

        • KJG says:

from what Jim Callis and Keith Law have recently said Daniel Norris hasn’t fallen per say, but he could definitely be there at 22.

  7. Andrew says:

I think we only take Greene if we want a slot signing at 22 and will use extra money to go after a bonus baby later in the draft. The team does want to increase its power and impact tools in the system and he has that for sure. I also would like someone different in the 1st round but Greene surely has the possibility to be a very very good player.

    • cariocacardinal says:

Given the lack of guarantee that there will be a player fall to us later that we would be interested in and think is worth the price that would seem like a fools strategy

      • Andrew says:

I agree with you I’m sure someone will fall due to signability but it’s a matter of if they are falling because they want alot more than we will pay. At this point I can see Hedges, Swihart and Bell all falling do the 3rd or 4th round due to them wanting to go to college. I’m sure we will start hearing soon about guys who just want a ton of money people like that will fall too i.e. Stetson Allie, AJ Cole, Wil Myers these guys didn’t have a strong college commit but wanted more than most teams were willing to pay.

  8. HogwildCard says:

I just wanted to take a minute to thank you guys for what you do here. You provide a good source of info on our minors and a good forum to discuss it. I especially want to thank you for what you guys do on draft day. It is amazing the way you put together all the info you do about our draftees. You save me so much time I would have to spend trying to find the info myself and you do a better job than I ever could. Thank you.

  9. RichardRich says:

For some reason I keep getting a stong Mike Stanton vibe with Larry Greene and would love it for him to be there with the 2nd pick.

  10. JBCardsFan says:

The Cards need to draft for hitting first, not pitching. The system is severely lacking in bona fide middle infield prospects.

MLB.com has put up their 1st round projections. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110602&content_id=19917766&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb

They have the Cards picking Kolten Wong, 2B from University of Hawaii. He bats left handed with some good pop in his bat and solid fielding. He ranks as the 2nd highest middle infield draft prospect on John Sickels’ draft board. Here’s a scouting report: http://mlbdraftguide.com/1/2011/03/20/kolten-wong-draft-profile/

I think the Cards should probably select a 2nd baseman and a shortstop with their first two picks. The Cards have 2 of the top pitching prospects in the minors in Miller and Martinez. Rosenthal, Gast, Swagerty, Cleto, and others make this a good pitching system. Ryan Jackson (batting .239 in AA) and Kozma are our top middle infield prospects…which really cannot continue. So here’s hoping to some good hitting middle infield bats being selected in the first few rounds!
