Another crazy day with Day 2 of the draft in the books. Much to talk about, but don’t forget about the guys we currently have in the farm. Pedr….ahem, Carlos Martinez started for Quad Cities, as it was a pitching filled day for the farm. Check out the details below!
Memphis 2, Oklahoma City 1 in 12 innings
- Nick Stavinoha was the only Redbirds hitter with more than 1 hit, finishing 2-5 with a double and RBI
- Andrew Brown added the only other extra-base hit with a double and was 1-3 overall with 2 walks
- Nick Derba started at catcher and went 1-3
- Mitchell Boggs started the game and gave up 1 unearned run over 5 IP. He gave up just 2 hits, 2 walks, and struck out 4
- Pete Parise, Chuckie Fick, and Raul Valdes managed to throw 6 consecutive perfect innings and struck out 9 batters through that stretch. Fick KO’d every guy he faced. All of those batters went home in shame.
- Memphis pitching only gave up 3 hits through all 12 innings
- Edgar Lara was 1-4 with a double
- Luis De La Cruz finished 1-3 with a double
- Ted Obregon hit 9th and went 1-3
- The top 3 in the order (Mateo, Melker, and Conley) went a combined 0-11. Conley had the hat trick
- Joe Kelly came out of the pen and had a line of 6 IP, 7 H, 3 R (2 ER), 1 BB, and 4 K. He didn’t have a great GO:FO ratio this time with just 6:5
- Virgil Hill hit 9th and was 2-3 with a double and 2 RBI
- Joseph Bergman DH’d and hit 1-3 with 2 RBI
- Jonathan Rodriguez went 0-4 with 3 K
- Carlos Martinez, who has already received Pedro Martinez comparisons, pitched 5 shutout innings and had a line of 5 IP, 4 H, 3 BB, and 7 K

I would like to take the time to thasnk you guys for the fantastic coverage of the top 10 players in the draft. It is so much fun to have all the info at my fingertips. Great work, fellas!!!!
Agreed
+1
Agreed. Part of the reason card fans are so informed are because of contributions from this sight.
Yep, agreed!
Me too…. Great job!
Thanks All! Draft time is a very busy time for us around here. Plus the Cardinals do not make it easy on us taking all these obscure players!
haha very true Jeff, You all do a great job it must have been especially challenging this year with the kind of odd draft the cardinals had, Im hoping there are some hidden gems that come from this draft.
I went to the Memphis game yesterday… that was a very odd game. HOT game for sure! 2 of OKC hits came in the first with Clemens double being a ball Solano should have had. That should tell you how well the guys pitched. OKC never seemed to be able to get a read on any of the guys. Memphis had 3 of their 5 hits in the first inning as well. Stavi and Brown both smoked letter high fast balls during that inning. The rest of the way the hitters just had bad luck. Balls were hit hard all over the place just happened to be to someone. Luna’s HR was 3/4 the way up the foul pole. He hit a ball earlier in the game that was caught at the track in the deepest part of the ballpark. I’m not sure how fast he is but he seems to have more speed than I thought. I will also say that I did not see Brown as being a terrible RF. Seemed to do alright out there. The guy can hit. I will say Rapoport never seemed to get a good stick on much nor did Bynum (lost his bat in the stands on a strikeout… not a good way to K). OKC almost won the game in the 9th as their RF hit a ball that was about 4 feet foul to LF. The next pitch… he K’d.
A little off topic, but is there any news on Tyrell Jenkins? Any idea when we will be seeing him this year?
Hes in EST, he will play the summer on a short season club, when their seasons start. Johnson City has him on their roster.
As far as I’ve heard, he’s still in EST and I believe he’s playing for Johnson City and their season doesn’t officially start until June 19th.
Awesome Draft coverage guys thank you. Papa Joe How did the relief pitchers look for Memphis,
They looked awesome!! It seemed that no matter who took the hill they were ready. Fick was just flat nasty. Even though they got to Marte a bit the bottom of 12, he stuck out the last batter with authority.
Any word on how his offspeed stuff was? Reports from his start at Busch Stadium was that nerves seemed to get the best of him, and his stuff wasn’t as sharp as it normally was.
Are you meaning Marte?
