Miranda was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 50th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft, so the Cardinals already liked him coming out of college. Miranda was the Hurricanes closer for at least part of the season this year. Miranda had a park and schedule adjusted 3.14 FIP this season with 37 Ks and 4 walks.
Lefty who can reach the upper 80′s
Miranda’s three-pitch mix and excellent 2010 numbers (12.17 K/9; 2.09 BB/9; 3.68 FIP; 47.1 IP) get him on the radar

This kid is a slopper. Most Canes fans couldn’t wait to get him out of the closer role with the team. Never breaks 90 with his fastball, and while he has a nice slider, it is inconsistent control wise, and he has trouble throwing it for actual strikes.
We took this kid in the 50th round out of high school, and while his arm angle and slider do project to a LOOGY, I can’t believe we took him this highly.
Looks like the org has now decided to draft all the players available 6 ft and under. Not sure if you noticed this the last 3 years now. But they are mostly taking undersized players in the draft. Especially pitchers 6 – 1 and under that have FB’s in the high 80′s. Not sure what the org is thinking.
Not sure what your point is… Looks like you are generalizing based on a very small sample size.
Seth Blair is 6-2 and Tyrell Jenkins is 6-4.
“Lefty who can reach the upper 80′s”
BE STILL, MY BEATING HEART!!!!
For real. Some glowing report.
Well, at least they didn’t say reach the 80′s…. sigh.
Hopefully a LOOGY that can move fast. Normally I wouldn’t hope for a LOOGY, but if he’s already a reliever and only hits the high 80s, there’s not a whole lot more to hope for.
A lot of lefties are in the 80s. Tallet has a hard time breaking 85.
Tallet also sucks. If Brian Tallet is this kid’s ceiling it’s a pretty underwhelming pick. I’m hopeful he can be a competent LOOGY but you don’t normally pick LOOGYs in the top 10 rounds I’d have thought, and it doesn’t sound like he has stuff that would be especially hard on lefties unless his slider is better than advertised.
His slider is good. He just has trouble throwing it for actual strikes. It’s one of those sweeping sliders that moves away from and down from lefties.
If he does improve the command to where he can throw it for strikes, he has the talent to be a competent LOOGY.
Canes fans just couldn’t wait to get a new closer because he didn’t have the stuff to get out right handed hitters for the more talented teams, such as the NCAA tournament.
Trevor Miller…not sure what we see in him. He came into the game in the 9th against Florida in a close game and I just turned to my wife and said, “We just lost.”
We did.
Tallet has had parts of 9 seasons in the big league.
Seriously. If This kids dulicates Tallet’s career, its a home run for an 8th round pick.
But other posters are right. Lefties do not rely on speed. He does need a good slider though.
Oh, i agree. But if Tallet is the UPSIDE, it’s an underwhelming pick, and given Tallet’s had his best season as a starter and this kid is a reliever ALREADY, I think it’s very unlikely he gets there. Tallet is a replacement-level reliever so really all we’re adding here is a likely organisational player. Nothing wrong with that but it’s a bit boring in round 8.
I don’t mind picking a guy we think is an advanced pure LOOGY at 8. But this guy looks like he needs to make major strides to either become a LOOGY or a replacement-level swingman type. Low floor AND low ceiling.
got it. That makes a bit more sence.
I kind of see it fromt he other angle. A mid draft pick is a good spot for a LH with a good slider.
Try to cheer up and be strong.

Possibly the Cards see something in his mechanics that they can change that might improve his velocity.
