Go Shelby!
Best pitching prospect in baseball now?
If not he’s damn close to it….. C Mart could actually end up above him by the end of the year is the scary part!
I would hold down me expectations of what could happen by the end of the year. CMart is far from a refined pitcher right now. Miller is quite a bit ahead of him and his stuff is undeniable. CMart could be the best pitching prospect in baseball by the end of next year…but too many things can happen from now until then
I don’t think that Miller is that far ahead of Martinez at this point.
I think he are giving Martinez too much credit from a refinement perspective. His raw stuff is REALLY good. He probably has a year to go to show he is improving his pitching craft and knowing how to pitch consistently….and he needs to face better competition to prove he is improving with advanced hitters. We already are seeing Miller do this and his mound presence is unprecedented. Martinez is a full year or more behind where Miller is today. No one can convince me otherwise at this point.
John Vuch said that right now, Carlos Martinez has more advanced secondary stuff than Miller.
I have seen a ton of video of Miller, some on Martinez and I saw Martinez live at Busch a month ago and I can’t believe that this would be the case. Miller has a plus FB, plus CB and his CH is on the verge of being plus. His control has significantly improved and is now plus and the intangibles that you can’t teach (mound presence, competitiveness, teachable, etc) are off the charts. Miller is the full package. Martinez has a plus FB, verge of a plus CB and an inconsistent CH that shows a ton of potential. He also has only pitched stateside for a month and a half. Don’t get me wrong…I love Martinez and he is quite exciting…but still on the raw side trying to figure it all out. Miller isn’t a complete product yet but he is getting closer much faster than I anticipated.
Maybe Vuch meant his secondary stuff is more advanced than Miller was at the same age or something like that.
BTW – I have also heard a few people say that Martinez “raw” stuff is better than Miller’s was when he turned pro. Some say he “could” be better than Miller in the long run. This doesn’t = Martinez is close to Miller at this stage of their career.
I think Martinez is better than what Miller was last year in QC. I don’t think there is any basis to put Martinez ahead of what Miller is doing this year.
Still, isn’t it great that we can have these discussions about two really spectacular young arms in the Cardinal system.
I’m just saying what John Vuch said in an interview.
Not sure the context of the comment…I’m a huge Miller fan but I’m not sure about his CB being a plus the Cardinals had to reteach it to him last year and then scrapped it again for a more sweeping one not 12-6. The teachability is also in question as he has resisted when the team wanted him to throw more cureveballs and changeups. He’s he has great mound presence and competitiveness. I’m as high as anyone on Miller but I think Martinez may be more talented. The one thing I see that Miller has over Martinez is the traditional pitchers frame and more likelyhood to be durable.
I see what your saying and Martinez “may” be more talented…be his is not ahead of Miller today. It is nice to have this dialogue about 2 extremely high upside pitchers though!
- Lance Lynn is scheduled to go for Memphis tonight.
- GCL Cardinals open their season on Tuesday, June 21st
Thanks — the fury of options and callups while I was in Vegas left me unclear who the Cardinals were starting.
That’ll do it. If Boggs does not come back down shortly, the rotation at Memphis should be Lynn, Ottavino, Walters, Dickson & Additon. There is some talk of Broderick moving back into the rotation, but up in the air for now.
Miller in his 3rd AA start absolutely dominated. 8IP, 4H, 2BB and 8Ks with 108 pitches. After 2 solid starts this is his first start at AA that he has totally dominated. His ERA in AA is down to 1.35 now. As a sidenote Trout (#1 prospect in baseball) went 1-4 off Miller with a single and a strikeout.
That single for Trout, by the way, was a drag bunt. Isn’t it great that Trout needed to surprise Miller with a bunt to get on base. Not only did Trout K but he also hit into a GIDP.
Trout has tons of bunt hits so its just him playing game and it shouldn’t be surprising to anyone, that’s why he’s a career .340 hitter in over 1,000 minor league AB before the age of 20. Whats surprising is how you make it out like he was somehow intimated by Miller and needed to trick him with something abnormal.
That should read 1,000 PA not AB,
That’s your bias creeping in, not mine. I never said he needed to trick Miller with something abnormal. I did say that he needed to surprise Miller with a drag bunt to get a hit. His other at bats were fairly pedestrian.
Read much?
I’m 100% sure its just your bias creeping in, if you or anyone thinks one of the best Leadoff men in the minors bunting for a hit is some type of a surprise then they aren’t paying any attention. If a Matt Adams type did it I would agree but when its a major part of the guys game and everyone knows it then not so much.
His other AB’s against Miller were he just fine just had poor results which are part of the game of Baseball and attempting to act like he get blown away is disingenuous. He worked 2 full counts of Miller and made outs on them and hit a sharp ball into a DP only his 7th ever so it wasn’t like he hit some weak ball and they rolled him up.
Follow Baseball much?
I wouldn’t put too much in working 2 full counts really. Miller went 3-0 on him to lead off the game and then came back and K’d him. The Miller v Trout showdown didn’t really show us much other than that Millers fastball is legit enough to where the Top Prospect in the minors can’t tee off on it. Not saying one is better or not. I thought it was pretty cool knowing that we would have had Trout had Miller not fell to us.
Trout swung at 4 pitches in the whole game one of those swings was the bunt and only one he missed was the full count K. He didn’t get blown away and had some solid at bats, It was just a normal game and it didn’t show us anything other than some of our fans want to reach for any trivial thing and make them bigger than they really are.
To be fair it wasn’t a drag bunt, it was a push bunt because right handed hitters can’t by defination drag bunt.
