What is up with Castellanos? Has anyone else notice his significant drop in production since Adams has been out of the lineup? Maybe he does best when batting after Adams……
Another solid line from Rosenthal. Only gave up one line drive over 6 innings. The other four hits were singles – three on the ground and one on a fly ball.
And we continue to see Greg Garcia’s name show up in the DFR. Definitely one of those guys thats on my “Players to keep an eye on” list.
Yeah, he’s kind of forcing people to notice him.
Umm, why? He’s hitting reasonably well in Palm Beach but it’s lucky batting average fueled. He hit with very little power in Quad Cities but drew a couple walks. Just not sure what to get excited about unless his defense is elite.
Well, the time I saw the River Bandits, I really had no idea who he was. I was there to see Taveras and Longmire, and Ferrara since he just happened to be the pitcher that day.
When the day was over, I was just impressed with something about Garcia although I really couldn’t put my finger on it. He hit the ball hard every time up the day I saw him and looked smooth in the field.
Now I know one scouting report from an amateur like me doesn’t make the guy anything, but since then he’s been on my radar and I seem to see him popping up more often than not.
From what I’ve seen in Spring Training and 7 RiverBandit games this year his D is excellent.
I would definitely take Ryan Jackson’s offensive stats to continue to the ML level with his defense.
Talk about a hard luck pitcher in the system this year. Rosenthal is 3 – 7 w/ an FIP of 2.53 to coincide with his 3.63 ERA. His babip is a staggering .353. Put a good defense behind this guy and he would blow up.
I feel for Rosenthal but win-loss does not mean much in the low minors so he should not take it hard. He is on the Cardinals prospect map and the door is open to him to show the organization what he’s got. Will be interesting to see what happens to Rosenthal when he hits Palm Beach.
What is the general expectation for Rosenthal to move to Palm Beach? Middle of the year to finish the season there?
what = when
I have the same question. I have no information, but I originally thought he might stay at QC all season with a shot at starting at Springfield next year. I have a hunch he goes to PB in July now.
I think Carlos moves up to Palm Beach soon too. I suspect they want him to spend a lot of time with Dennis Martinez working on his secondary offering.
Interesting. I wonder if there is room for both Rosenthal and Martinez to move up? Martinez is no doubt ready – I just got the impression he would finish the year in QC I guess using the same logic (whatever that is) to start him out in EST vs. QC.
I actually think this was the reason he spent a lot of time in EST. The coaching staff for Palm Beach is easily accessible for instruction and the FSL is one of the easiest leagues for travel schedule. He was basically given time with Martinez. He is basically going to run into the same problem in QC that Miller had at PB…hitters are not going to be able to handle his fastball.
Martinez is probably the Cards best minor league pitching coach. I suspect it is a mutual relationship where Martinez wants to be in the game and live in Florida and the Cards are going to accomodate him no matter what. All of the orgs pitching talent is going to spend sometime in PB. If it was not for Martinez being there Miller opens the season in Springfield.
Obviously, garcia is not going to keep hitting for a .500 wOBA, but he has some signs of being a decent hitter – a 10 percent walk rate and an above average hitter in QC. I doubt he’s a slugger long term. It would be nice to hear more about his D. A shortstop – or even a 2b – who got on base and had a .100 ISO would be a nice thing.
Rosenthal = strikeouts and groundballs.
I suspect Rosie could be a meaningful trade chip a month from now—especially since Miller, Martinez, and (I hope) Taveras will be “untouchable.”
I’m curious where the Redbird organization would rank Trevor among its pitching prospects. I see a reasonable argument to put him anywhere from 3rd to, say, 6th or 7th.
Jeff posted a while back that he was ranked very high coming out of Spring Training and I believe that is accurate. I think 3-7 is probably correct – and I think it is on the high side. I don’t think the Cards have any interest in trading him unless the trade is just too good to be true. I think he has a lot of upside.
No reason to trade Rosenthal this year. He’s too valuable to the future and could be traded as a real blue chip in a few years when he’s more on the map. Trading him this year unless its for a premiere player is short sighted. Even with Miller and Martinez doing so well we have to remember young arms flame out which is why we need to keep as many as we can in our system. Rosenthal has number 2 talent and you dont trade that away for a stopgap.
Um, that’s what I meant to say! :)
Gast is on a pace to put in 140+ innings. He did 35 last year in Batavia, does anyone know what he did prior to being drafted?
Had Tommy John surgery in 2008, came back to pitch 13 1/3 in the regular season and either 5 1/3 or 7 2/3 in the post season. In 2009, he pitched 38 2/3 innings, starting out the year in the weekend starting rotation, ended up in the bullpen for FSU.
Thanks. I saw he pitched 70 something last season at FSU. That with last year means he’s on a safe pace. I like him. I think that the lack of offense/defense around the organization is tough on some of the pitchers.
I agree with you on both counts, and I think that is one of the reasons the organization focused on bringing more athletes into the system this year. Of course, that doesn’t mean they can catch and throw, they just have the natural ability to arrive a little sooner.
