The farm went 1-3 on the night with Quad Cities providing the lone victory. A lot of offense put up by Springfield and the continuing resurgence of DJ Tools provide some of the highlights in tonights DFR.

anyone know if Roberto and Robelys Reyes are related?
What’s going on w/ DJ Tools? Seems like he either learned a few things sitting on the bench and watching, or he is finally fully healthy and able to play w/o restrictions.
Kelly would look a lot better than Blazek in Springfield’s rotation.
what a boost for the organization if he re-establishes himself this summer. he is still only 24 years old. . . . .
.358 BABIP, but that’s not necessarily that far out of line with his career BABIPs.
Greenwood got it handed to him again today by NWA and allowed 11 ER to them over his last 2 outings in just 1.1 IP to see him Double-A ERA go from 2.41 to 5.14.
I actually looked at this when writing up the DFR. It seemed to me that Greenwood had had a stellar season until a couple weeks ago and then he kind of just dropped of a cliff. I figured it might be injury. However, when I looked into it, he really hasn’t. He has been bombed his last two outings, but besides those two, he has only had three other bad outings all season. Two were bacl to back, like these, in the middle of May (13th and 15th). The other was in April. I guess it is like Cariocardinal says, when the sinker isn’t working…… lets hope it starts.
When his sinker works he’s great, when it doesn’t ……..
lefties are still hitting less than .150 against him on the year. he’s faced about 50 lefties this year.
Nice to see Ryan Jackson continue to hit. If he could even hit .270 consistently, I’d live with that.
The managers in AA and AAA both got ejected — one in the 6th, one in the 7th. Maybe they thought the umpiring had something to do with the pitchers’ crummy lines.
Personally, I wonder if the umpiring had something to do with Eduardo Sanchez’ injury. I saw one game a couple weeks ago where he had to throw something like 30 pitches to get through an inning. Most of the pitches were strikes, and the umpire was calling them balls for reasons I couldn’t understand. They looked like strikes on TV and on the computer. His slider was doing everything it’s supposed to do, moving sharply from right to left, but the umpire made him keep throwing it over and over.
Sanchez has been squeezed in his short MLB career so far more than any pitcher I can ever remember. It’s been truly bizarre.
I think TLR being afraid to go to Franklin and Batista quite a bit is causing him to wear out Sanchez…….thats a part of the injury i think, his workload is way to high for someone like him.
Seems a bit harsh on Addition – 4 hits in 5 IP, and a 6:1 K:BB ratio. Looks like a pretty decent start to me. Just got unlucky (presuambly) that a lot of the hits bunched together.
Three of the four hits against Additon, and all four runs were the result of HR’s. Otherwise he was not as bad as might be thought.
Oh, I didn’t realise that – changes things a bit. That wasn’t included in the DFR – would’ve been pertinent, I’d have thought!
Warner was tossed on an absolutely atrocious call at 3B. Jackson made a nice play in the hole and his only play was the force at 3B. Not even close. So it should’ve only been 14-10 much better.
Count me as one unimpressed by Cox’s reaction time at 3B. Have to keep hoping the bat will play and he can be close to avg defense.
I forgot that we had a Benes in the system
The Ironic thing about the Pujols injury…..
If a less rangy fielder (like SKip Shu) would have been in the game and not Kozmanaut, Albert’s wrist probably would be fine right now and the ball would have found it’s way to center field.
Kozma should have kept it in his pocket anyway, no chance on that play. Thats inexperience for ya.
Pujols is out 4 to 6 weeks with a small fracture in his wrist…. (Kozma has been immediately released from the organization because of it)…. jk..
Unfortunitly this mean MR. Hamilton gets called back up because of the injury exception. Does this mean he gets to actually play so that he can actually get consistent AB’s every game instead of sitting on the bench until the 9th inning and then be asked to PH against the other teams closer?
Nope it means Jon Jay gets to be an everyday player again with Berkman at first.
No chance on that play? If pujols would have caught it the guy would have been out by a step. It was a tough play, and crappy luck. Kozma did the right play, throw the ball in the ground so if there is no chance pujols can come off and knock it down. Te fact that pujols risked himself to the runner for the ball shows that he thought that he could get him, because albert has no qualms about jumping off the base when there is no chance
No way the ball was 5 foot up line so there is no way Pujols holds the bag. He should have kept it in his pocket there was no possible play on it.
I disagree. If he would have caught it cleanly, Albert would have tagged out Betemit.
Pujols didn’t play it right, not the young rookie trying his hardest. Some are blaming Pete and that is so unfair. If they didn’t want him in that situation, why put him in it.
Albert hasn’t had some misplays this year, they said going back and forth from one base to another has been the problem, I say no way, he just hasn’t seemed to have had his head in the game. A few weeks ago he thought that there were 3 outs and headed back to the dugout. I think he’s been hurt, he has stuggled to find the power, I don’t think it’s about bad pitches. Perhaps whatever it has been can heal as well.
The umpiring is terrible in AA, I don’t know about AAA, the strike zone has been terrible all season, and there have been some really bad calls. I think what’s happended is that there is a lot of frustration, these kids are young, especially harder on the guys trying to force hits for GB. Lots of stuff just getting hit down the middle, plus, keep in mind that most of the pitcher are being seen the second and third time, that makes a difference as well. Just wanted to add that in so that you all would understand that it’s not necessarioly about injury, or not progressing, just plain old frustration. This is part of the process too, learning to deal with that head stuff.
Nice to see Taveras have a good day. Not been many of those since his return. Quad Cities is clearly closing in on Burlington and becoming the class of the League. They look much better offensively with Taveras in the lineup.
The QC paper says Taveras finished with 21 hits in his final 42 at-bats. Could those possibly be post-injury at-bats? Hitting .500 for a week and a half, even if they’re all singles, is astounding.
That couldn’t be right. On his stat page at MiLB.com, it has him 12 for his last 40 AB, a .300 average, including games in May before he re-injured his hamstring.
He was 26 for 52 before the injury. He’s hit 7 for 29 since returning.
Taveras was right at .500 when he reinjured himself. He was at .667 after this first 4 games when he injured himself the first time.
Hopefully not – Hamilton won’t help the major league club
Too bad for Pujols. This will certainly hurt the Cards chances in the pennant race. On another note: Any chance this gets Adams a call up to Memphis? I think everyone agrees that he deserves a chance a AAA. I believe that he is returning from his injury mid-this week.
I was about to post the same thing…. giving him a look at AAA the rest of the season means he could be in the running for the 1B spot in spring training next year if AP leaves.
Obviously I wish the injury didn’t happen, but I do think this will knock his value down a bit on the FA market. Because of the injury, if he comes back healthy in Aug and Sept, I think it gives us a better chance to sign him. Agree? Disagree?
I would love to see Adams in AAA after the All Star Game, but with skipping high A, they may be reluctant to move to AAA this year….Although he deserves a shot!
Not sure about the FA question. I believe AP will rebound, but this will definetly hurt his stock. Lower than normal stats this year, age, and length of contract will all be a huge factor in the off season. One of those three will be the major issue…..in my opinion only.
I really doubt the Cardinals front office or ownership would seriously consider Matt Adams as reasonable replacement for Albert Pujols in 2011 if Albert chooses to leave.
To me it would say a lot about what kind of owner Bill Dewitt is if they actually did.
Excuse me.
2012
Actually they might take the money that they have allotted for AP and spread it around and get a better all around ball club. You have to realize that they only spent 7M on their bull-pen this year and other clubs like the Phillies spent around 30M.
I wouldn’t be so sure that Hamilton gets the call. With Berkman being the primary guy to play 1st while Pujols is gone, they may go for another outfielder. Jones is a long shot, but imagine that.
Any word on when Craig will be back? I’d like to see him as the starting RFer to make up for the loss of power we’re going to have with AP out. Also, I love having Jay in the 4th OFer role.
It would be nice to get Craig back and Freese. Think of this line up:
SS Theriot
2B Craig
RF Berkman
LF Holliday
3B Freese
CF Rasmus
C Molina
1B Hamilton
I’d much rather see Jay in RF and Berkman at 1B.
My ideal lineup would be:
SS Reyes (Trade Cox, Jenkins and another mid level arm)
2B Theriot
LF Holliday
1B Berkman
CF Rasmus
RF Craig
3B Freese
C Molina
Does Zack Cox really have the kind of value to be able to be the center of a deal for that kind of (albeit injury prone) player?
Right now anyway?
He’s a one tool player that hasn’t excelled in the one tool he possesses at all.
Despite a two week stretch in Palm Beach, he’s been quite terrible this season.
I am going to be in San Antonio next week, and the Texas League All-Star game will be there. Who are our reps, and what are some minor league all-star activities; i.e.- hr derby? Thanks!
For 2012 how about this team? Considering everything from buyouts and options (dumping Carp and keeping Yadi) and including arbitration raises for Raz, Garcia, Theriot, Motte and Boggs and assuming we dump Skip
Lineup
SS Reyes – 7/119 (17AAV)
2B Theriot
LF Holliday
1B Berkman – 2/22
CF Rasmus
RF Craig
3B Freese
C Molina
Bench
Laird – 1/1
Descalso
Jay
M. Carpenter
Take your pick on one of our AAA or AA OFers (Chambers, Brown, DJ Tools, etc)
SP
Waino
Garcia
Lohse
Westbrook
Lynn
Bullpen
Sanchez or Salas – Closer
Sanchez or Salas – Setup
Motte
Boggs
KMac
T. Miller – 1/1
FA LHP – 1/2
All of this can be had for roughly $105M, which is about 5M less than we are spending this year, there is flexibility with the IF and OF as well. That team could win some games….. if we don’t sign Pujols, we REALLY need to go after Reyes…. 7 yrs and 119M get it done you guys think? And I think everyone can agree that we won’t pick up Carps option at this point? We’ll already have 4 guys locked in next year so we can either bring Lynn up or stick with KMac, but I’d prefer having him in the long relief role and Lynn should be ready for the 5 spot by next year I would assume.
There’s probably a good chance they re-sign Carpenter to a more friendly deal after buying him out. Especially since his buyout is only $1M.
So you lose Pujols and only add Reyes onto the team we have now? No way
But when general manager John Mozeliak was asked Monday afternoon if Berkman will replace Pujols, he replied: “I wouldn’t jump to that conclusion yet. The question is: How do we want to inject the new bat? As the six weeks come and go, there would be a chance to get Allen Craig some work (at first base). And this creates opportunity for Jon Jay.”
Mozeliak continued: “One of the things we wanted to do is score more runs this year. Losing our No. 3 hitter makes that more difficult.
Who knows if Craig will even be healthy enough to play while Albert is out?
I think I’d focus more on how to use best utilize the healthy players currently on the roster. But that’s me.
Take out the word ‘use’ and it kinds makes some sense.
kinda*
I give up.

P-D reporting Mark Hamilton to take Pujols’ place on active roster. Suspicion is he will receive significant playing time.
Thats crazy to me because before this they were talking about trying to get Jay playing time. Now that a situation occurs where he will get a shot to be a regular they still keep him as a 4th OF and play Hamilton at 1b? I do like the kid getting a legit chance I just don’t think it will be good for the team.
Wow that sounds like a terrible idea to me, They need to play Jay over a soon to be 27 year old unproven player with a .317 OPS and tons of K’s in his limited time. Jay can hit LHP has a .304 career BA and helps the OF defense dramatically with Lance being such a butcher out there,
I say play him full time as a make or break chance. If he struggles, in 10-14 days you have Craig or Freese coming back and you can adjust. If he performs, you significantly strengthen your off season position with regards to bargaining with Pujols and Berkman. Worse case there would be a worthy trade chip.
I think the other thing they are looking at is you would be replacing AP’s bat with a singles hitter with no power if you did that with Jay and they already have to many singles hitters in the line up. That is why Hamilton gets a shot.
You have to keep in mind one of the reasons Hamilton looked so bad is because he was taking too many 1st and 2nd pitches for strikes in his AB’s and the majority of his AB’s were as a pinch hitter against the other teams closer after he had sat on the bench the whole game. That’s not much of a way to get adjusted to ML pitching and break in to the big leagues.
