chris perez has a 4.52 xFIP, which means he’s been getting ridiculously lucky. he has a BABIP against of .250, a LOB rate of 80%, and a 2.7% HR/FB rate. he walks a batter once every two innings.

sure, his ERA looks nice, but so did miguel batista’s about three weeks ago.

“Not good”? Have you looked at what he’s actually been doing this year and last? If the Cardinals had half a dozen “not good” relievers like that, I’d even be willing to let them keep Franklin around as a palliative for TLR’s and DD’s obsession with grizzled veterans.

Sorry gents, you gotta give up something of value to get something. Closers are a high demand property year in year out at the deadline.

The old Matt Adams straight up for Heath Bell will not get us an elite closer.

Rasmus is probably not as valuable as he was 2 years ago. Bringing up Hanley Ramirez/Jose Reyes…..forget Rasmus and start thinking Shelby Miller.

When the De Rosa trade was made, I was far more upset to see The Destroyer go. Motte was ahead of Perez at the time. Let go Jack….

I agree that, in general, Mo isn’t great when it comes to trades, but he’s pulled off a couple of decent ones (I think Edmonds for Freese was one of his, the Ludwick/Westbrook deal and the Holliday deal were fair trades for both sides, and Ryan for Cleto is looking like a fair trade as well, although there are a couple of bad ones on the ledger as well), and the Greene for Gregerson deal is probably a bit of a freak. At the time of the trade, I don’t think the Padres expected Luke Gregerson to suddenly become this good. In fact, I’m not even sure Luke Gregerson’s mom would’ve expected Luke Gregerson to be this good.

Spending money on bullpens is generally a bad idea. Fuentes, Gregg and Farnsworth are all overpaid.

I agree that (in general) keeping your internal bullpen guys (like Todd & Perez) is a good idea, though I don’t think the DeRosa trade was that bad. We got Todd back (who turns out to not be very good) and Perez would only be the 4th or 5th best right-handed reliever on our team right now. He just isn’t an impact player, despite his extremely lucky save rate in Cleveland this year, and I think is due arbitration next year so it’s not like he’ll be very cheap for long.

The DeRosa trade also netted us a type B comp pick, which I believe turned into Tyrrel Jenkins. IMO Jenkins, right now, is probably worth more than Perez, and we got half of year of (it turned out an injured) Mark DeRosa in a contending season, and got Todd back anyhow. At the time I thought the trade was a slight overpay but it wasn’t an egregious one, and TBH the guy I was more upset about losing was Todd.

The performance that we got out of Derosa pretty much = Tyler Greene…

Keeping tabs of the trades MO makes…. it appears that the other clubs thing he’s an idiot as well. Just look at the K Greene trade… and then he goes back and does another deal with them in the RL trade last year…. I think after what SD pulled on the KG trade I would never dial their number again when looking to make a trade…

Tyler Greene was pretty much what he is today back in 2009. Not very good. Actually, he was a little worse.
