I hope they promote joe kelly to springfield
It appears as though Springfield could use an infusion of starting pitching talent. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Gast promoted soon. He’s really throwing well.
Can they just convert Ottavino to a reliever now? What are they waiting for?
Ottavino’s future will probably be as a reliever, I agree with you there. However, he’s not even a year removed from being shut down with a shoulder injury. The powers that be wanted him to have surgery, he opted to rehab the injury. The front office wants to see that he is healthy and build up his endurance and strength. Additionally, being a starter allows him to work on and refine his pitches.
IMO he will follow a similar path to Mitchell Boggs and work as a reliever, whether that is with the Cardinals or some other team. (He’s no longer on the 40-man roster). Its frustrating to watch him toil in Memphis as a starter when he would be an asset to the big league club in relief.
He would be an asset if he can consistently throw strikes. He has moments where he can’t find the zone. If his command improves a bit, he could be a very good late inning reliever.
Hitters have a .275 avg against him and he has given up 36BB in 81 innings. This line would be much worse in the ML’s.
Lynn’s batting average against is .279. You have to remember this is the PCL and occasionally a starter really gets rocked and gives up a ton of hits.
Those are his stats as a starter. As a reliever he would dial the fastball up a few mph and hitters would only see him once, instead of three times. Pretty common to have a failed starter turn into a reliever. See Jason Isringhausen,
And Mariano Rivera…
In related news, Shelby and C-Mart have been announced as members of the teams contesting the Futures Game at the All-Star break.
Just an addendum to Gast’s line. He also picked off 3 runners. Does anyone know how we can find out how many he’s picked off this year and how many bases have been stolen against him?
Depending on the accuracy of the box scores at milb.com, Gast has given up 2 stolen bases, with 4 runners caught stealing; he has 5 pickoffs in his 13 appearances this year, including the 3 last night.
Looks like he’s uber effective at shutting down the running game.
Yadi and Gast would make a deadly battery in shutting down the running game
Chambers is really starting to turn his season around. Will be nice to see him continue to roll…want to see him get a cup
“Get a cup.” Ah … now I understand his problem. If I had to face 90-mph pitches, particularly from pitchers with poor control, without a cup, I’d be tentative at the plate too.
Oh. Never mind. :-)
NICE!!
Does anyone have info on injured players like McGregor, Bibona, and Stidham who have been out all year? Also how long will Mulligan Pham, Robinson and Conley be out?
This Keith Butler kid is putting up some really good results.
In his call up to Palm Beach, he’s only given up 1 run over 13 IP with 17 Ks. I take it he’s the Palm Beach closer now. I really like that the Cards may have another good relief prospect coming up through the system.
Couldn’t find a scouting report on the guy. Anyone know anything on him?
I know this kid broke the Kentucky High school record for the most pitching wins
