This broke yesterday, but per Quad Cities Times, and first here by commentor Richard Rich (Can I call you Richie?):
Carlos Martinez has been promoted to Palm Beach.
The Cardinals aggressive promotions for their top prospects continue.

Aggressive…but not overly aggressive. He has the stuff to continue to dominate. At this rate, he could be the #5 in the Show to start 2013.
Waino
Garcia
???
Miller
Martinez
Salivate…
By 2013 we’ll have so many options for our ???? it could be Lynn, Cleto, Swagerty, Gast, Kelly,Rosenthal etc. We are gonna have a ton of pitching depth by then.
Martinez will only be 21 on opening day 2013. Much as he’s been impressive so far, I think it’s too much to ask him to jump three levels (AA, AAA, to MLB) in the space of basically one season. I’d be happy if he’s ready for 2014 personally, and hope they give him all the time he needs to develop his secondary offerings and strategy on the mound. He’s still quite raw and I really don’t think he’s likely to make it as a fully-formed starter in little over a year.
Lynn is the ???
I have to say that I am surprised but I guess I don’t see anything wrong with it. It also must be confirmation that they believe he’s everything that he was projected to be.
I may be in the minority, but I would have preferred that he stayed in Quad Cities a whole season. I’m a big believer in letting someone just starting off his first professional season taste some sustained success.
Depends on that sustained success. If he is so successfull that it limits his ability to use his secondary stuff, than a promo should be warraned.
In Martinez case, I’m not so sure that we have much reason not to expect sustained success at the Palm Beach level. His defense should step up a bit and frankly that’s what he needs most.
Palm Beach is perfect for him. Close to home, and where he became most comfortable to start the year in February.
Not to mention a pitcher friendly environ.
One nice thing about this move is that it gives him a chance to work with PB pitching coach Dennis Martinez. One, Martinez seems to know his stuff, and two, he’s a Spanish speaker who can work with C-Mart about as comfortably as anyone. Unqualified thumbs up on this transaction.
Thats a very good point about Dennis Martinez. That might be why they didn’t hesitate to promote him so quickly.
Touche. Forgot about the Dennis Martinez factor.
yea, but it is bizarre to think that they don’t have a spanish-speaking coach on every team
They have at least a Spanish-surnamed coach or manager at most levels, particularly the lower ones. That doesn’t correlate perfectly with ability to speak Spanish, by any means, but it at least suggests that the need is noted and addressed. However, there’s a difference between a Spanish-speaking “coach” and a Spanish-speaking PITCHING coach, particularly a good one (as Dennis Martinez appears to be). The opportunity for the two Martinezes to work together can only be a positive.
a thought on the projections of when these guys will be ready to pitch in the bigs. it’s not only whether they can get guys out, but how many innings they can take. Martinez threw 59 innings last year. to project him to be able to consume 180 plus innings after next year w/o serious possible effects seems to me to be pretty optimistic. I would think it would be ’14 before he would be ready to handle a full load as a starter in the bigs.
I am not surprised by this move, either. I almost expected it. I figured he would get one more start at PB and if all went well, then he’d get bumped up a level.
So now the question becomes, does he get promoted AGAIN this year? If he continues to roll through lineups and dominate teams, what would you do? Would you let him build confidence and finish the season at QC? Or, would you let him make his final 2 or 3 starts at Springfield and see how he does there?
Oops, just noticed I flipped PB and QC. Sorry about that :)
I would hope that’s the plan.
He will stay at PB the rest of the year…they wanted to get him in a more Spanish Speaking enviornment, plus the weather is warmer through September…not to mention he dominated QC. This move was justified. I expect to see Rosenthal be the next one up (once Kelley is promoted).
You state the stuff about Martinez as if it is fact. Is it a fact? Is there a source? or is it just speculation?
It might not be fact but it makes sense if you think about it. The Cards most likely want C-Mart to get around Dennis Martinez, Carlos is still acclimating to American culture and weather and they most likely want him some where were the weather stays warmer when it gets into the fall and he wasnt being challenged in QC, there really was no reason for him to not get bumped up.
Look at his K/9, or his K/BB and their dominant. Combine that with a high GO/AO ratio, and the low opponents batting average and Martinez is just overwhelming hitters. It was only a matter of when, and I’m glad it’s sooner rather than later.
