The farm went 2-3 overall on a night that didn’t feature much offense, as Springfield goes into the All-Star Break.  There was one team that erupted for 8 runs, so check out who that was after the break!

Omaha 6, Memphis 2

  • Matt Carpenter hit his 5th HR of the year, a solo-shot, and finished 1-3 with a walk
  • Andrew Brown also had a solo-bomb and finished 1-4
  • Aaron Luna was 0-2 with 2 walks
  • Tyler Greene led off and hit 1-3
  • Adam Ottavino had a very good line after going 7 innings and giving up 1 run on 5 hits and a walk. He struck out 7
  • Jess Todd recorded the loss after giving up 3 runs in an IP

Palm Beach 4, Jupiter 2

  • Alan Ahmady had the only extra-base hit for the Cardinals after he went 1-4 with a double and 2 RBI
  • Adam Melker led off and hit 3-4 with a stolen base
  • Xavier Scruggs recorded the hat trick in strike outs and also picked up a single
  • Joe Kelly gave up 2 runs (1 earned) over 6 innings. He walked 4 and gave up 4 hits, but he struck out 8, didn’t give up an extra-base hit, and had a GO:AO ratio of 7:1

Cedar Rapids 3, Quad Cities 1

  • Michael Swinson led off and hit 2-4 with a double
  • Ronny Gil also had a double and finished 1-3 with a walk
  • Oscar Taveras had the gall to go 0-4 after I said last night that he had reached safely in each game since coming back from the DL
  • Kolten Wong went hitless in 3 at-bats, but he picked up a walk
  • Cody Stanley had a double in 4 at-bats
  • Boone Whiting continues to dominate the Midwest League, this time in the rotation, after he struck out 11 in 8 innings. He gave up 3 runs on 2 homers and walked 1
  • Dean Kiekhefer struck out 2 in a scoreless inning of work out of the pen

Jamestown 5, Batavia 1

Johnson City 8, Elizabethton 7

  • I finally get to write about some offensive performances on the night after Tyler Rahmatulla led off and went 2-3 with a triple, RBI, and 2 walks
  • Neal Pritchard picked up 3 hits and 3 RBI in 4 at-bats
  • Anthony Garcia had a double and single in 4 plate appearances
  • Steven Ramos was 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI in the 9th spot
  • Joshua Lucas gave up all 7 runs in 3.2 innings off of 2 homers and 2 doubles, among the 9 hits he scattered
  • The rest of the pen pitched just over 5 innings of shut out ball, highlighted by Logan Billbrough and Michael Santana, who struck out 9 total batters over 4.1 innings

Interesting. Johnson City is trying to run away and hide from the rest of the league. 8-0 is pretty impressive.

  2. RichardRich says:

Elizabethton’s coaches must be sick to lose a 1 run game to Johnson City while making 7 errors and giving up 5 UR runs, rare to see a SP give up 7 ER over 3.2 IP and have a ND locked in after the half inning. After 8 games JC is averaging 2.37 errors per game and their opposition is at 3.12 a game and oddly enough they had a totally error-less game once this year.

    • Lou Schuler says:

Must be exciting to have Miguel Sano on your team. He was 4-5 last night w. 3 XB hits. Also made 3 errors at 3rd base. It looks like his bat is going to be good enough for a corner outfield spot, if that’s where his glove takes him.

Signing a 16-year-old for $3+ million is such a huge risk for an org like Minnesota, but if he keeps hitting (and cuts back on his strikeouts), his bat will make it a smart investment.

  3. cariocafrank says:

keep your eye on Anthony Garcia at JC. a year old than Taveras was while at JC but he might be a better hitter.

Whiting had 10 GB outs to go with his 11 K’s.

    • Felonius_Monk says:

Has Garcia got any chance of staying at C? I realise it’s only in rookie ball, but the combo of pop plus a great eye (nearly as many walks as strikeouts in 146 PA last year) is very intriguing. I agree he looks a real sleeper, I think he’s on my personal top 20 list…

  4. Felonius_Monk says:

Can you “scatter” 9 hits in 3.2 IP? I’d say Lucas got kinda hammered.

    • Pierce says:

I qualified “among the 9 hits he scattered” with the fact that he gave up 2 bombs and 2 doubles. Definitely not a good outing!

  5. Bookworm says:

Ottavino is now 2nd in the Pacific Coast League for strikeouts! I would say his line was better than “very good”!

    • JC says:

I keep touting him as a reliever in the bigs but he is starting to make me wonder if he can make it as a starter. Keep it up Mr. Ottavino…would much rather have another big league ready starter

      • azruavatar says:

Adam Ottavino versus righthanders: 48.1 IP, 53 Ks, 12 BBs
Adam Ottavino versus lefthanders: 40.0 IP, 33 Ks, 25 BBs

If he’s anything in the majors, he’s a reliever.

        • pitch and hit says:

          I agree.
The only issue is that he possibly may have some shoulder instability, I say give him another chance and let him prove himself, he deserves it.

          • pitch and hit says:

One thing, not sure if they can afford to lose a starter in AAA, they may send up Fick, give him a chance to get on the 40 man roster and make some extra pocket change, he deserves it and I am sure that it would make Chuck Fick Sr proud!

  6. Pierce says:

Boone Whiting has 63 strikeouts compared to 12 walks in the Midwest League. I would say he’s done a lot more than “continues to dominate the Midwest League”!!

  7. Bob says:

After declaring that Anthony Garcia was going to stay behind the plate, it’s disappointing to see the organization has (apparently) reversed course and relegated the kid to a corner outfield slot.

On a brighter side, $300K bonus baby shortstop Leobaldo Pina continues his nice start in the DSL, with a 1-3 plus a walk, bringing his overall line to a better-than-league-average .288/.384/.315. (Gotta like that 10/14 BB/K ratio, too.)

Speaking of Venezuelan middle infielders, it’s only been a week, but Breyvil Valera is looking good so far in the Gulf Coast League, at .280/.424/.480 — with four walks v. two whiffs. The best farm system in baseball is headquartered in Missouri…but it ain’t Kansas City anymore. ;)

    • Andrew says:

I think they said he would be playing both. Only reason he was put in the OF is he wasn’t going to be getting as many AB’s if he was just the catcher so he voluteered to play OF also so he could play more.
